(03) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position
Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Post-Doctoral Research Visit F/M Geometry of plasma confinement in stellarators
The post-doc will be based in the Laboratoire Jacques-Louis Lions at Sorbonne Université and will involve periodic visits to Renaissance Fusion in Grenoble. He/she will work in collaborations both with experts in control theory (team CAGE), plasma physics (Renaissance Fusion), and shape optimization (Yannick Privat, Université de Strasbourg). The stellarator design opens many technological and theoretical research challenges. At the core of the proposed project is the design of coils generating a magnetic field in a toroidal domain whose integral lines are sufficiently twisted to optmize the confinement. Such twist is needed to counteract natural drifts of the plasma towards the exterior of the stellarator.

The team makes fundamental and applied research in the analysis of complex natural signals using paradigms and methods from Statistical Physics such as: scale invariance, predictability, universality classes We study the parameters related to common statistical organization in different complex signals and systems, we derive new types of sparse and compact representations, and machine learning approaches. We are also developing tools for the analysis of complex signals that better match the statistical and geometrical organisation inside these data: as a typical example, we cite the evaluation of cascading properties of physical variables inside complex signals.

A postdoctoral position is open in the Inria Dracula team. The position is to be funded by an ANR grant (MEMOIRE project). The context of this work is the modelling of plasma physics for nuclear fusion. Plasma are described either by kinetic models, valid in all physical regimes but very expensive to solve, or by fluid models, which are easier to solve but only valid around thermodynamic equilibria. Several works have been performed to extend the domain of validity of these fluid models by constructing so-called closures that appropriately modify the heat flux and the pressure tensor to capture non-equilibrium dynamics.

The overall objective of the CHROMA group is to address fundamental and open issues that lie at the intersection of “Human-Centered Robotics” and “Multi-Robot Systems”. Our goal is to design algorithms and develop models allowing mobile robots to navigate and operate in dynamic and human-populated environments. CHROMA is involved in all decision aspects pertaining to robot navigation tasks, including perception and motion-planning. Our approach for addressing this challenge is to bring together probabilistic methods, planning techniques and multi-agent decision models. The Autonomous Vehicles research represents an important part of this work and it involves several academic and industrial projects, including collaborations with companies such as Renault and Toyota.
