PhD position summary/title: PhD position in Reality Capture for Real Estate Valuation
The doctoral project at ETH Zurich (research project 5a) is part of the response to the fifth objective, ‘Digital expansion of valuation’. The project will explore potential mechanisms for enabling the paradigm shift in real estate valuation. The lack of information on the existing building stock is notoriously a source of uncertainty in valuation methods. In addition, large-scale circular practices in construction require an efficient flow of information that is often not yet available. Thus, the digital transformation of the built environment opens up new perspectives for real estate valuation in the CE. Data gathering techniques combined with computer vision will enable the development of inventory tools that provide valuable information on existing buildings and components, including prediction of parameters that cannot be otherwise easily observed and measured (e.g. layers, elements condition, etc.). The aim of this project is to answer the question: what is the role that new digital tools should play in buildings to support innovative real estate valuation methods? This project will seek to define relevant data for valuation methods and to test new digital technologies. As well as a dissertation, and a number of academic papers, the project will produce an accessible report for real estate professionals.
The doctoral candidate (DC) will spend the majority of the funded three years at ETH in Zurich, Switzerland, but will also be funded for two periods on secondment to QuiVal partners, one to industry partner Madaster and the other to university partner University of Antwerp in Antwerp, Belgium. There will also be significant opportunities for sharing knowledge and fostering discussions with the other 12 DCs, through five workshops and three summer schools. The DCs will also work together to collect data, and collaborate with stakeholders including a network of industry frontrunners who are partners in the programme, increasing understanding, research impact, and chances of employment in the real estate and related sectors.

(12) PhD Degree – Fully Funded
PhD position summary/title: PhD candidate for developing and building new concepts for ultra-fast, medium voltage solid-state pulse modulators
We are seeking individuals with outstanding academic credentials and a high level of motivation to engage in doctoral-level research on the development of novel concepts for ultrafast pulse modulators capable of generating pulses with an amplitude of up to 15kV/300A, a pulse width in the range of 1-2ns and a rise/fall time of less than 500ps. Such fast ns-pulse generators are required, for example, in kicker systems, which are a key element of future synchrotron light sources (e.g. SLS 2.0 @ PSI) needed for basic research in biomedicine, engineering and natural sciences. The extremely fast rise and fall times of the pulses are crucial for the efficient operation of the kicker system without distorting the electron beam. The very fast voltage pulses cannot be generated with “conventional” switching devices as for example GaN HEMTs or SiC MOSFETs, since these are too slow. Therefore, the project will investigate concepts that exploit the fast reverse recovery behaviour of special diodes and use these diodes as “opening switches” in combination with GaN HEMTs and/or SiC MOSFETs. Such diodes will be developed by the Advanced Power Semiconductor Laboratory (APS) at the ETH within the framework of the planned project.
The research project will start with the investigation and development of basic pulse generator topologies using the extremely fast diodes as opening switches. Since all the parasitic elements of the circuit and the diode package strongly influence the achievable switching speed, the converter layout and the packaging will be optimised in a second step of the project. This includes investigating the series connection of several diodes and/or sub-circuits to achieve the required pulse voltage levels. The packaging of the developed diodes will be investigated in cooperation with APS. Finally, the design of the pulse generator will be optimised, and a prototype system will be built to validate the research results. The project will be carried out in close collaboration with various research facilities that require such fast ns pulse generators for the design of future accelerator systems.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Position in Rock Mechanics
Catastrophic rock slope failure and subsequent runout is an important hazard in many alpine regions. It is a complex process that is partly controlled by the interaction between discontinuities and intact rock. There is an urgent need for improved process understanding of rock slope failure, as increased development pressures are changing the risk posed by rock slopes around the world. The present project leverages the unique expertise and facilities available in The Chair of Engineering Geology at ETH Zurich to improve our understanding of these processes.
In this project, you will use the state-of-the-art laboratory and numerical modelling infrastructure available to the Chair of Engineering Geology to develop, test and apply a new methodology to investigate the behaviour of jointed rock. This will combine state-of-the-art mechanical tests with recent developments in additive manufacturing. You will then use numerical modelling to develop, validate and test the newly developed methodology. Finally, you will perform scaled experiments of engineering geology systems to make fundamental insights into processes such as rock slope failure and rock fracture propagation in jointed rock.
