(08) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc in Materials Science and Engineering

Are you intrigued by materials failure and seek an opportunity to resolve the microstructural reasons in quest for a potential cure? Fatigue during cyclic loading is overwhelmingly the dominant reason for materials deterioration. Repeated loading and unloading changes the internal microstructure and bring about local stresses in metallic materials. These internal stresses superimpose with external loads in a synergistic manner causing an accelerated microstructural evolution, initiation of fatigue cracks and ultimately failure. Recent experimental findings reveal that the maximum of the internal stress shows a phase shift and does not coincide with the maximum external load but occur later – strongly urging for reconsideration of their impact on cyclic deformation. The collaborative research project aims towards gaining insight in this phase shift, its origin, and consequences for the microstructural deterioration during fatigue. The post doc position offers participation in beam times and an outplacement for three months at Los Alamos National Laboratory.

(15) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc or research assistant in Landfill Aeration

The project is a demonstration project, which has focus on shortening the aftercare period of landfilled waste and reduce the environmental impacts. The emissions both in respect to gas and leachate are continuing for a very long period (several decades) in a normal scenario. By injecting atmospheric air into the waste layers, aerobic degradation processes are enhanced, which potentially leads to lower production of methane, and reduced content of nitrogen-containing substances and heavy metals in the generated leachate. This will shorten the time-frame of the after-care period, which substantially will reduce costs related to the after-care period. Landfill aeration has been used as technology in several European countries. It has not before been used or tested in Denmark, where the waste composition has a lower content of organic waste as compared to other European countries. Since landfills with low organic content are becoming more common internationally, it is important to assess landfill aeration as an option in these cases.

(16) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc in detection and quantification of fugitive emissions

DTU Sustains section Climate and Monitoring offers a 2½-year position as a post-doctoral fellow in detection and quantification of fugitive emissions with focus on direct emissions of greenhouse gases. You will be a part of a larger project (KhaosGuard – Innovations in remote sensing for better measurement of greenhouse gas emissions), which is a collaboration with DTU Fotonik, manufacturers of laser products, leading providers of gas measurement services and consultants with a global outreach. The problem addressed is direct emissions of greenhouse gases from industries, utilities, agriculture etc. Minimizing those emissions is of great importance in the effort to mitigate climate change. To minimize direct emissions, accurate and cost-effective measurement methods and instrumentations are needed to asses emissions from various processes, components etc. and to inform facilities in case of defects, which cause increased emissions. We will develop and test both vehicle-based, drone-based and fence-line monitoring applications of laser detection of gaseous emissions from various sources.

(24) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc in molecular microbiology and functional cloning of antimicrobial resistance

The Genomic Epidemiology Research Group is a world-class leading in AMR detection and surveillance using sewage as monitoring matrix. Several AMR genes (colistin, ceftriaxone, and tetracycline) were functionally detected from positive clones from sewage samples, yet without respective AMR gene. Similarly, several AMR genes were identified in sewage samples without functionally positive clones. The positions will attempt to target such genes from sewage and ancient permafrost plasmidomes and chromosomal DNA and build several clone libraries that contain the targeted genes for functional cloning in an appropriate recipient bacterial cell. An important research objective is to identify novel AMR genes by functional cloning and determine the bacterial host location of known and novel genes.

(25) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc in single cell DNA sequencing of complex microbial communities

Complex microbial communities (e.g., microbiomes) harbour an enormous amount of diverse and rich species, with equally rich gene reservoir for various functions. Our current species and gene identification methods, while advanced, still lack accurate traceability potentials. Horizontal gene transfer (HGT) and antimicrobial resistance (AMR) make up a hotspot for gene plasticity and dynamics, where, for example, plasmid-derived AMR can transfer within a complex community between different bacterial host. Which makes linking AMR gene to their respective plasmid or bacterial carrier problematic. Employing single cell sequencing will allow not only uncover a variety of taxa that have never been sequenced before, without culturing, but also enables linking AMR genes to the mobile genetic elements (e.g., plasmids) and bacterial hosts. It will also allow for a more detailed phylogenetic analyses for bacterial relatedness with higher resolutions. Which could help elucidate hidden dynamics and variation in strain dominance of congeneric species that might have never been described before. Particularly in complex microbial communities such as animal microbiomes. We are seeking a candidate for a vacant postdoc position in microbiology with a focus on investigating the dissemination and dynamics of microbial communities, and their gene reservoirs, within animal microbiomes using single cell sequencing approach.
