We are looking for a Data Science researcher with an interest in interdisciplinary research collaborations and a strong foundation in machine learning and image processing. Responsibilities of the position will include the following:

• Participation in the development, implementation and management of software for high-through-put phenotyping (both image acquisition and analysis).
• Performing methodological research in image processing, 3D models, point clouds (from LiDAR and/or SFM), vegetation indices and plant morphologies.
• Preparing drafts and participating as author and co-author for technical documents, relevant scientific papers, conference paper, reports etc. focusing on research related to phenotyping research and activities at the Section for Crop Sciences.
• Participation in seminars, workgroups and meetings as a technical resource representative of the department.

In your project part you will target the fate of plant root derived organic matter as a function of 3D soil structure and soil mineral composition. Thus, together we will aim at better understanding the interactions of plant roots and their traits, microbial activity and the physical soil structure that regulate the fate of persistent soil organic matter. The work will range from highly controlled experiments at lab scale to field trials in which we will test root-microorganism-soil interactions. You will apply stable isotope tracing, classical soil biogeochemical methods as well as state-of-the-art spectromicroscopic imaging techniques (e.g. scanning electron microscopy, nano-scale secondary ion mass spectrometry) to underpin quantitative data with in-situ process scale observations. A special emphasize will be put on the application of x-ray µCT in combination with other imaging techniques to elucidate chemical gradients. 

DARK Fellowships are postdoc positions for scientists intending to carry out independent research within the areas of interest to DARK. DARK Fellows are invited to work with faculty and junior professors at DARK and will have access to a range of international observing facilities, computing facilities, and an assortment of international collaborations. They are also encouraged to interact with scientists at other research centers in the Copenhagen area, including the Niels Bohr International Academy, the Center for Cosmic Dawn, the Center for Star and Planet Formation, DTU Space, and Lund Observatory.

We are seeking a candidate to join the project ALFi: Assessment of Listening Fatigue in daily life, which aims to develop methods for measuring and predicting the additional cognitive effort that hearing aid users typically need to exert when listening in noisy environments compared to normal hearing peers. This project will employ a hybrid experimental approach so that participants are tested both in the laboratory under controlled conditions but also in longitudinal field trials spanning several weeks of daily life. You will be the main lead in designing and carrying out the field trials, which will include the development of smartphone-based questionnaires and data-logging protocols with various sensors (acoustical and physiological). In addition, you will analyze, explore, and interpret data from both laboratory experiments and fields trials. You will work closely together with researchers, audiologists, and technical experts within Eriksholm and Oticon but also alongside all project partners in academia.

Type 2 diabetes is a chronic metabolic disease characterized by altered whole-body and tissue-specific metabolism, hyperglycemia, hyperinsulinemia and insulin resistance of peripheral tissues. One risk factor for the development of type 2 diabetes is the disruption of circadian rhythms. Circadian rhythms are driven by biological clocks that are synchronized by environmental stimuli such as light, diet and exercise. The research performed within this postdoctoral position will elucidate mechanisms by which physiological and epigenetic processes are modulated by the circadian clock machinery in a diurnal manner, and how synchronizing the timing of therapeutic interventions (e.g. diet and exercise) to the molecular circadian clock can optimize the treatment of type 2 diabetes. We are seeking a highly motivated researcher who will analyze and integrate a range of omics data (transcriptomics, epigenomics, metabolomics, proteomics) with comprehensive metabolic phenotyping from a range of clinical and preclinical models (e.g. cell, rodent, and human) to identify important targets in the regulation of circadian rhythms and metabolic health.

The post doc position is connected to WP2 “Diet and Nutrition” and WP6 “Biomedical measurements” and the scientific focus will mainly be on the effects of children’s nutrition on health and prevention of overweight and lifestyle diseases. WP2 includes a healthy school food programme and activities focusing on parents, SFOs, sports clubs and the local food environment. Measurements in WP6 will be conducted at the schools and include children’s dietary intake and nutrient status, food competences, BMI and body composition, cardiometabolic blood markers, physical activity and fitness, cognitive function, wellbeing etc.

JusTiDe investigates how climate justice is and has been conceived by civil society groups, expert bodies, decision-makers and interest groups in Denmark. The aim is to provide an integrated analysis of how climate justice commitments produce new types of legitimacy and temporal imagination in the Danish political landscape. Based on this complex interface between scientific advice, legal frameworks, and political cultures, JusTiDe’s overarching research question is: How has climate justice produced new temporal imaginaries in Danish contexts of sustainable welfare, civil society engagement and global leadership ambitions?

Obesity and diabetes are complex metabolic diseases with substantial etiological heterogeneity. Recent studies have described subtypes of these diseases based on variable clinical presentation or genetic differences. A better understanding of the molecular mechanisms underlying these subtypes of obesity and diabetes is needed for the eventual implementation of precision medicine for metabolic diseases. The successful candidate will analyze high throughput omics data (genomics, transcriptomics, metabolomics, proteomics, metagenomics) from large biobanks and population cohorts to elucidate 1) molecular signatures underlying obesity and diabetes subtypes, 2) investigate how these features are related to variable disease progression and the propensity to develop clinical complications, and 3) determine whether targeted therapeutic strategies are more likely to work into specific disease subtypes.

Plants defend themselves against insect herbivory by releasing climate-relevant volatile organic compounds (VOCs) to the atmosphere. Herbivore damage alters VOC emission blends and increases the emission rates from the affected ecosystem to the atmosphere. The total effect of herbivory on VOC fluxes is likely to be considerable, at least periodically, but still this is not accounted for in the current models. The aim of this project is to assess effects of insect herbivory on VOC emissions in the rapidly warming high latitude regions, where herbivory pressure is increasing with climate change. We will quantify ecosystem-scale, branch, stem and forest floor VOC emissions of a Subarctic mountain birch forest during several growing seasons, while monitoring insect herbivory intensity and the environmental conditions. We will also use modeling approaches to assess the importance of herbivory for regional VOC emissions as well as their impacts on atmospheric chemistry under different climate scenarios. This will improve our understanding of the plant-stress-related climate feedbacks.

DAWN Fellows are expected to pursue their own independent, cutting-edge research programs.

We are looking for individuals interested in focusing on enhancer networks in early human development and human organ specific differentiation.  As a postdoctoral researcher in the Brickman group, you will be working in the field of stem cell and developmental biology. You will be part of an international interdisciplinary team of scientists focusing on understanding the transcriptional basis for development and exploiting this to develop new technologies for cell type specification in culture. We employ both mouse and human model systems in vitro and in vivo, where the advertised positions will focus on the use of three-dimensional synthetic models for human development. Specifically, the first project will focus on human hypoblast and stem cell-based embryo models and the second, VFGs as a model for the more effective differentiation of pluripotent stem cells to hepatic and pancreatic organoids. The positions will use a combination of cell culture, molecular biology, microscopy and next generation sequencing (NGS) technologies. There are also opportunities to explore both projects computationally.

We seek someone with expertise in contemporary Buddhism, who is able to design and undertake a research project on Buddhism and waste. The postdoctoral position is opened in the framework of the international, collective research project Waste: Consumption and Buddhism in the age of garbage, which is funded by the VELUX FONDEN (September 2021 – August 2025). The postdoc will join a research team of five scholars working within the project Waste under the leadership of the PI, Associate Professor Trine Brox. This project will generate new understandings of how Buddhist communities and individuals generate and interpret waste, and how waste practices are intimately related to cultural imaginaries. In particular, the project is interested in Buddhist consumption practices, waste regimes, value, affect, and aesthetics as they are connected to the waste imaginaries and waste trajectories that we study. The project asks: how do Buddhists define and sort waste from non-waste? What are the effects of increased consumption practices and waste production on ecological systems, cultural practices, social relations, rituals, and customs? The postdoc and the other team members will collectively and through their individual ethnographic studies respond to these research questions.

A postdoc position is available at the Cellular Network Biology group at The Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Protein Research (CPR – www.cpr.ku.dk). The Center was established in 2007 at the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen, to promote basic and applied discovery research on human proteins of medical relevance. It comprises a wide range of expertise and resources including proteomics, protein production, bioinformatics and general characterization of disease mechanisms. The Disease Systems Biology program consists of three research groups covering many systems level aspects of biology and medicine, including the integration of molecular-level data and healthcare data, including biomedical texts.

We are looking to hire a highly motivated and dynamic researcher with a PhD or equivalent doctorate to join the Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Basic Metabolic Research, University of Copenhagen, to work between the Loos Group and the Schéele Group. The candidate should have a strong background in cell and molecular biology. The starting date is March 1, 2023, or after agreement. The postdoctoral fellowship is offered as part an exciting initiative in close collaboration with the Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Genomic Mechanisms of Disease (Broad Institute, USA). The candidate will have the opportunity to spend some time in the US, to train at the Broad Institute.

Within the focused research project “Hybrid Quantum Chemistry on Hybrid Quantum Computers”, recently funded by the Novo Nordisk Foundation, we are seeking several postdoctoral fellows to work on the development of quantum chemical methods and software for the prediction of molecular properties on hybrid classic-quantum architectures involving IBM’s NISQ quantum computers.

The successful candidate will develop quantitative risk assessment and mathematical models as tools to quantify the probability of introduction and within-farm spread of pathogens. These models will be used to estimate the impact of biosecurity measures on pathogen transmission, to prioritise which biosecurity measures should be implemented and/or to reduce the probability of introduction and spread of pathogens at farm level. Within the epidemiological models the cost-effectiveness of implementing critical biosecurity measures will be assessed for both endemic and epidemic/emerging infectious diseases relevant for intensive and extensive production systems. This requires development of computational models to quantify the relative importance of different transmission routes, allowing a deeper understanding of the impact of biosecurity practices on the introduction and spread of pathogens in the herds, and to demonstrate the value of improved biosecurity by quantifying the cost of biosecurity measures and their relationship to the effectiveness or monetary savings for the private industry.

The cardiovascular research group is seeking a postdoc in the area of molecular regulation of metabolism and vascular function with a specific focus on the role of mitochondrial peptides. The research involves human experiments, mouse and cellular studies as well as substantial molecular analysis. The duties of the postdoc includes all of these aspects of research as well as performance of other duties such as teaching. The postdoc applicant must have solid qualifications within cardiovascular physiology, human experimentation and within cell culture and experimentation.

Focusing on natural products – the complex molecules used as pharmaceuticals, flavors, or colorants – we engineer microorganisms for the production of high-value compounds.

The successful postdoctoral candidate will focus on to what extent the landscape was used to provide the raw materials for clothing, sails and furnishing textiles in the Viking Age. While also contributing to the overall research aims of Textiles Resources in Viking Age landscape. The Viking Age was a period of transition and change, characterized by overseas trade, warfare, and colonization, where the socio-political development supported the formation of centralized kingdoms within the Scandinavian homelands. The Viking Age is a period in which textile production gets a deeper impact on society, clearly indicating a new consumption of sails that supported long-distance travels as well as a new fascination and use of luxury clothing. The introduction of the sail in the 7th century was without a doubt one of the most important and innovative technological developments of the period and allowed the Scandinavian communities to travel long distances over the open sea, in order to engage more efficiently in trade and raiding and to explore new lands. The project hypothesis is that the use of sailcloth and changes in textile production demanded physical labour as well as a large supply of raw material, which would result in an increase in land use for sheep grazing and large-scale cultivation of textile crops as well as changes in settlement structures.

The successful postdoctoral candidate will focus on the textile material of the medieval period, while contributing to the overall research aims of Fashioning Sudan. Textile research in Sudan has predominantly focused on the cataloguing of existing collections, excavated in the beginning of the 20th century and often without clear contextual information. Efforts have been mostly dedicated to establishing technical benchmarks, especially for weaving techniques. In contrast, the postdoctoral candidate will engage on a thoroughly archaeological study, combining the identification of raw material, the documentation of the textile chaîne opératoire, and – more importantly – the interpretation of the different uses of textiles during the life of the owner and within the graves. Together with the project’s team, the postdoctoral candidate will empirically and theoretically analyse the different types of garments and corresponding dress practices.

Applications are invited for a one to two-year fully funded Postdoc position (with no teaching obligations) at the Department of Economics, UCPH, in connection with the project “Shocking Religion: Using Natural Experiments to Quantify How Religion Impacts Society”. The overarching aim of the project is to examine whether differences in religiosity can explain an important part of various economic confounders, such as aggregate economic growth, gender inequality, profession choices, etc. We focus on religiosity, i.e. the strength of peoples’ faith, rather than their type of religion. To identify the causal impact of religiosity, we will exploit natural experiments and construct data on religiosity that varies within countries and within religious denominations.
