31 Postdoctoral Fellowship at Karolinska Institute, Sweden

We have an opening for an individual wishing to join a multidisciplinary team aimed to understand the biochemical dysregulations that drive the development of asthma. Towards that end, the successful applicant will take the lead in analyzing multiple projects that involve integrating metabolomics and lipidomics data with other omics (e.g., proteomics, transcriptomics) as well as clinical phenotyping data. The primary challenge will be to identify the key molecular drivers of the different sub-types of asthma. Much of the work will involve the use of data from the U-BIOPRED project to investigate severe asthma (https://bit.ly/41gv8iY), as well as metabolomics data from multiple intervention trials to investigate the use of biologics to treat asthma. The overarching aim is to use the findings to develop diagnostic tests for identifying molecular sub-phenotypes of asthma.

The research will focus on health effects from exposure to biomass burning smoke, an increasing issue in large parts of the world. The emphasis of the research is to investigate disease mechanisms of acute cardiopulmonary effects from exposure to biomass particulate matter (PM) from wildfires in Brazilian Amazon by integrating atmospheric sciences, analytical chemistry, population and in vitro studies.

The post doc will primarily use cellular and molecular biology methodologies to determine the mode-of-action of PM extracts from wildfires in Amazon (inflammation, oxidative stress, tissue injury, genotoxicity, and cell death) in a co-culture lung cell model. In addition, the post doc will assist in the chemical characterization of the samples (e.g., HPLC-GC-MS, ICP-MS, DLS).  The candidate is expected to have a firm understanding of the field of air quality and its impact on human health and be interested in contributing to an interdisciplinary research unit. Other tasks include writing manuscripts and participating in meetings and discussions with partners.

An important task for the selected candidate will be to contribute conceptually and methodologically to the research within this VR-funded project under the supervision of associate professor Davide L Vetrano (main supervisor) and professor Bengt Winblad. In addition, the selected candidate will have the opportunity to initiate his/her own projects. Production of reports and publications for peer-reviewed journals as well as other ways of disseminating knowledge become central tasks. Please, note that no wet lab expertise is required for this position. No lab experiments will be carried out. All biomarkers involved are part of SNAC-K already collected material.

You will investigate the interplay between chromosome organization and function, focusing on SMC complexes and their connection to DNA supercoiling. Depending on competence and preference, you will take an in vivo approach performing diverse functional analyses and genome-wide investigations, and/or perform biochemical analysis of various variants of purified SMC complexes and topoisomerase enzymes.

The successful candidate will be part of an international, interactive, and multidisciplinary team with expertise in biochemistry, molecular biology, cell biology, and bioinformatics.

We are looking for a postdoc to the research group “EPiCSS” with an interest in and expertise in psychiatric epidemiology, to work within a FORTE-financed project focusing on how migration affects compulsory psychiatric care using regional and national registers.

The aim is to study why compulsory psychiatric care is more common amongst migrants than the Swedish-born population and examine possible explanations as to why it differs. This will be done using register based epidemiology.

The main task is the production of scientific articles for publication. The applicant is expected to plan and perform statistical analyzes, present at conferences and participate in writing research applications. Furthermore, the applicant is expected to conduct some teaching and supervision.

We are seeking an ambitious postdoctoral fellow with great team-working and communication skills, who has a background in either vascular biology (preferably small vessel diseases/CADASIL), and/or neurodegenerative diseases. The successful applicant should have extensive experience and practical skills from research animal work, immunohistochemistry and regular protein and RNA analysis methods such as western blot, qPCR, ELISA, MSD and cell-and molecular biology techniques. Furthermore, it is a merit if the applicant has knowledge in Bioinformatic tools such as in R coding language, and data processing using different package such as the Seurat package, ClusterProfiler, Monocle3. Good ability to speak and write English is a requirement. A strong scientific drive is expected, documented with a publication record.

Framför allt kommer du att arbeta i en studie med kvalitativ ansats som syftar till att undersöka, utifrån ett genusperspektiv, personliga assistenters och deras arbetsgivares upplevelser av underlättande och hindrande faktorer för återgång i arbete efter sjukskrivning på grund av psykisk ohälsa. Arbetet innefattar datainsamling genom kvalitativa intervjuer, och utförandet av analys (reflexiv tematisk analys). We are looking for a research specialist who will work in different projects about associations between life situation, morbidity, and sickness absence. We conduct both observational and intervention studies.

The projects are interdisciplinary and you will work closely with other researchers and statisticians. We are looking for a highly motivated individual to join the group of Associate Professor Dhifaf Sarhan as a Postdoctoral Fellow to work on projects concerning the sex-immune dimorphism in the tumor microenvironment of solid tumors. The position is based at ANA Futura at Karolinska Institutet, Flmingsberg Campus. Through collaborations with clinicians and core facilities, basic and translational researchers, we have access to new world-class unique infrastructure for developing new therapeutic strategies and studying the efficacy and safety of novel treatments in a translational setting and later in clinical trials.

Your main role will be to perform a broad range of analyses of registry- and clinical data on some of the largest cohorts in the field. You will work in a project funded by the Swedish Research Council focusing on psychological sex differences with the overarching aim to describe and explain these differences but also to understand the potential impact they may have on society and everyday life. We address questions relating to the importance of sex chromosomes and fetal androgen exposure in sex differences. Is it possible to identify patterns of cognitive skills and behaviors that constitute meaningful sex-typical profiles? Can such sex-typical profiles provide an understanding of why there are such large gender differences in career choices? We collect new data but also use Swedish register data. The work includes, in addition to usual research work, acquiring Swedish register data, and statistically analyzing complex relationships. The position may also include supervision of bachelor’s and master’s students.

The Schultzberg lab addresses fundamental questions in neuroinflammation with the aim to find new treatment targets in Alzheimer’s disease. Our studies build upon in vivo and in vitro models as well as on analysis of human clinical samples, in order to elucidate the molecular and cellular mechanisms for resolving neuroinflammation and regaining homeostasis in the brain. Resolution of inflammation in the brain is a relatively new research field and our studies aim to provide knowledge on the signals for resolving inflammation in the brain and whether stimulation or modulation of these is beneficial for neuronal functioning and eventually as a potential target for the treatment of patients. The Schultzberg Lab is currently collaborating closely with the Li group, which is focussed on addressing the developmental and regenerative potential of diverse neural stem and progenitor cells during neurodevelopment, degeneration and regeneration, by using cutting-edge single-cell and spatial omics.

We are seeking an outstanding candidate for a post-doctoral fellowship dedicated to explore the synergisms between the epigenome and the 3-dimensional nuclear architecture to effectuate oncogene expression from new perspectives. The successful applicants are expected to drive a postdoctoral project in the lab of Anita Göndör at the department of Oncology and Pathology, as well as to participate in collaborative efforts with both national and international collaborative labs with a focus on breast and colon cancer. Our lab is well-equipped including a Mi-seq machine and a 5-color confocal microscope, and located within the Theme Cancer section of BioClinicum at Karolinska Institutet.

We are seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral researcher in bioinformatics to join a a research team dedicated to understand the function of 3D epigenome folding in relation to the nuclear architecture and its deregulation in human diseases. The candidate is expected to drive a postdoctoral project and participate in collaborative efforts to uncover hitherto unknown therapeutic targets in complex diseases, such as cancer. The work will be carried out at the department of Oncology and Pathology in the lab of Anita Göndör. We have innovated state-of-the-art techniques enabling the analysis of 3D chromatin structures and chromatin fibre networks in single cells and small cell populations to provide unique opportunities for novel discoveries. In addition, we have developed assay systems to score for genome wide analyses of gene trafficking and the involved regulators using siRNA libraries.

Obesity is a risk factor for cancer and predicts poor clinical outcomes. An important, negative predictor of cancer survival is metastasis. The mechanisms underlying the metastatic spread of cancer, including the orchestrated programs coordinating cell migration and dissemination, remain unclear. The epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT) is a critical tumour cell plasticity and dedifferentiation program, by which epithelial cells acquire pro-migratory and invasive mesenchymal properties. Obesity-induced changes in adipocytes within the tumour microenvironment have been shown to influence the behaviour of adjacent cancer cells, promoting the infiltration of immune cells and the secretion of cytokines, resulting in localized inflammation. Tumour-resident adipocytes and stromal cells have also been shown to promote the growth, migration and invasion of breast cancer cells in the cancer mileu, with fatty acids derived from cancer-associated adipocytes acting as an energy source for tumour cells. Little is known, however, about the contribution of adipose tissue distal to the tumour site. With approximately 90% of the body’s fat being subcutaneous and metastasis a systemic disease, the contribution of this fat depot, in lean and obese states, is of prime importance. The advertised postdoctoral position will investigate the contribution of white adipose tissue fat cells to cancer progression, with particular focus on how adipocytes promote metastasis in human cancers.

The successful applicant will work with human adipose tissue biopsies, cancer cell lines and patient-derived cancer cells. Analyses and methods include cell culture,  immunocytochemistry, confocal microscopy, invasion assay and other molecular biology techniques (including protein and RNA analyses). The postdoctoral fellow will bring hands on cancer expertise to the group, complementing the adipose tissue expertise of the Spalding group and metastasis expertise of our cancer collaborators (Theresa Vincent, KI and NYU). The main aims of the project will be to investigate the contribution of adipocytes from individuals with obesity to promoting the metastatic spread of cancer.  

To qualify, the applicant must have a Ph.D. in neuroscience, genetics, molecular biology or a closely related field. He/She should demonstrate extensive expertise in both vivo and in vitro modelling of neurogenetic disorders, as well as a strong background in translational research, particularly in the area of cell signalling. The applicant must also be proficient in behavioral paradigms, live imaging, light microscopy, immunohistochemistry, cellular-molecular biology and avanced imaging analyses techniques. Additionaly, the applicant should exhibit a strong scientific interest and a proven track record of high-impact publications and succesful acquisition of funding through (inter)national competitions.

The applicant needs to have strong competence in running projects independently and good abilities for teamwork and cooperation within a dynamic group of basic scientists. The applicant is expected to lead and conduct cutting-edge research for publication in highly ranked journals, apply for independent grants, and supervise Ph.D. students.

The Lanner lab aims to reveal mechanistic insights into how skeletal muscle metabolism and function declines during many common conditions/diseases (including: obesity, autoimmune diseases, and cancer). Moreover, to develop new interventions to improve the muscle metabolism and function, and thereby the quality of life for afflicted patients.

The Postdoctoral Fellow that joins the team will be investigating how a newly identified mitochondrial modulator may alter skeletal muscle function and metabolism. The work will be performed using genetically modified preclinical models. We are looking for an ambitious postdoctoral fellow with a solid background in human cytotoxic lymphocytes biology background to join our highly accomplished team. The successful applicant will work in the Division for Lung and Airway Research in laboratories located at the Center for Molecular Medicine, Karolinska University Hospital Solna, and at the Institute of Environmental Medicine, Karolinska Institutet, Solna Campus. The position is intended to serve two research groups in the division on a 70/30 basis. The primary responsibility is the practical and administrative responsibility for laboratory logistics, biobank storage and data bases for our human study samples. The collection of samples from human donors requires close collaboration with specialist physicians and nurses at Karolinska University Hospital in Solna and Huddinge. The secondary responsibility is the analysis with flow cytometry of the airway and blood cell samples from human donors. The third responsibility is to design and perform experiments on isolated cells from the airways and from blood. Parlak Lab focuses on developing novel medical diagnostic methods designing wearable sensors for microbiology, immunology and neuroscience. The group is building new interdisciplinary research as there is an immense potential for new fundamental insights to be discovered.

We are looking for one talented and highly motivated postdoctoral researchers with an interest to work with multi-tracer in vivo PET study, measuring  different pathological markers including beta amyloid and tau deposition, astrogliosis, synapse function and impairment, combined with cognitive tests, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and plasma biomarkers and MRI. The postdoctoral researchers mission is to assist in the study of long-term outcomes in persons with MS exposed to disease-modifying therapies (DMTs) using high-quality prospectively collected data from nationwide registries. Specifically, we plan to evaluate the long-term safety of MS DMTs in the general MS population, and in pregnant women with MS. The proposed work will include collaboration between epidemiologists, statisticians, and clinicians working within the Department of Clinical Neuroscience, Neuro Division.

The successful candidate will work with our research team to design and conduct research relevant to the research group’s agenda while receiving advanced training to enhance professional skills and research independence. The time will be devoted to data management and analysis, report and manuscript preparation, and career development. The candidate will be asked to collaborate with others, including graduate students, and provide their expertise in other projects. There are no teaching requirements but opportunities to teach can be facilitated.

We aim to recruit a highly motivated postdoctoral researcher with clinical experience as a medical doctor and a strong research background in molecular genetics and rare diseases, preferably affecting the skeleton. The aim of the project is to identify new genetic causes for skeletal disorders with osteoporosis, abnormal mineral homeostasis, short stature, or deformities, and to characterize the molecular mechanisms through which the genetic defects lead to the phenotype. The study includes patients and families who suffer from these rare diseases. We use mainly whole-genome sequencing and RNA-sequencing to identify the disease-causing gene defects.
