The objective of this project is to build embodied conversational agents (also known as ECAs, or virtual humans, or chatbots, or multimodal dialogue systems) that have the ability to engage their users in both social and task talk, where the social talk serves to improve task performance. In order to achieve this objective, we model human-human conversation, and integrate the models into ECAs, and then evaluate their performance. Depending on the candidate’s experience, she or he can be hired as postdoc, or as “young researcher”, which is a more advanced position.

One of the main goals of social robotics research is to design and develop robots or intelligible virtual avatars (IVAs) that can engage in social environments in ways that are appealing and familiar to humans. However, the interaction is often difficult because users do not understand the internal states, intentions, actions and expectations of the robot or IVA. Thus, to facilitate successful interaction, social bots must offer both natural and intuitive communication functionality. Given the design of humanoid robots, they are generally expected to display human-like communication behaviors, using speech and non-verbal expressions just like humans. Gestures help convey information that speech alone cannot provide and that needs to be supplemented, such as referential, spatial, or iconic information. In multimodal communication, gestures can make interaction with robots more efficient. In fact, gestures and speech interact.

One of the team’s main research interests involves automating the process of teaching computer science to novice students. Additionally, this PhD program is primarily based on interdisciplinary approach of individuals’ intrinsic motivation (curiosity) as critical ingredient for synergistic human-computer interactions. Today, very few studies provide information on the impact of intrinsic motivation and curiosity on the inter-individual variability of learning across life span or on their neuro-protective role against the aging effects or attentional disorders.

(09) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position
Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral engineer in Computer Vision and Artificial Intelligence
The STARS research team focuses on the design of cognitive systems for activity recognition. More specifically, she is interested in the semantic and real-time interpretation of dynamic scenes observed by video cameras and other sensors. Thus, it studies long-term spatio-temporal activities carried out by human beings, animals or vehicles. The major problem in the semantic interpretation of dynamic scenes is the large discrepancy between the subjective interpretation of the data and the objective measurements provided by the sensors. To solve this problem, STARS proposes new techniques in the fields of cognitive vision, deep learning and cognitive systems for physical object detection, recognition and activity learning, system design and evaluation. STARS focuses on two areas of application: video surveillance and keeping the elderly at home.

This Post-doc subject is proposed in the context of the ROAD-AI Challenge involving the Cerema and the Inria Team ACENTAURI.
ACENTAURI is a robotic team located in Sophia Antipolis that studies and develop intelligent, autonomous and mobile robots that collaborate between them to achieve challenging tasks in dynamic environments. The team tackle perception, decision and control problems for multi-robot collaboration by proposing an original hybrid model-driven/data driven approach to artificial intelligence and by studying efficient algorithms. The team focus on robotic applications like environment monitoring and transportation of people and goods. In these applications, several robots will share multi-sensor information eventually coming from infrastructure. The effectiveness of the proposed approaches are demonstrated on real robotic systems like cars AGVs and UAVs together with industrial partners.

During this century, there has been an ever increasing interest in the development of objective vocal biomarkers to assist in diagnosis and monitoring of neurodegenerative diseases and, recently, respiratory diseases because of the Covid-19 pandemic. The literature is now relatively rich in methods for objective analysis of dysarthria, a class of motor speech disorders [1], where most of the effort has been made on speech impaired by Parkinson’s disease. However, relatively few studies have addressed the challenging problem of discrimination between subgroups of Parkinsonian disorders which share similar clinical symptoms, particularly is early disease stages [2]. As for the analysis of speech impaired by respiratory diseases, the field is relatively new (with existing developments in very specialized areas) but is taking a great attention since the beginning of the pandemic.

To cope with the high technological diversity of the IoT solutions landscape, the MiMove team has introduced a systematic solution to the IoT interoperability problem at the middleware layer. We identify common interaction abstractions across the multitude of existing heterogeneous IoT protocols and model them into the DeX (Data eXchange) API & connector model. We further elicit the DeXIDL (Interface Description) language to describe the application interfaces of Things in a common abstract way. Based on DeX and DeXIDL, we introduce an architecture for mediators that can bridge heterogeneous Things and their protocols. The outcome of our overall effort is the DeXMS (Mediator Synthesizer) development & runtime framework (https://gitlab.inria.fr/zefxis/DeXMS ), which supports the automated synthesis, deployment and execution of mediators, whether at the edge or in the cloud.

The goal of this postdoc work is to contribute to the development of Bayesian methods for the estimation of extreme risk measures in high dimensional settings. We propose to investigate how introducing prior information in the Extreme-PLS model [4] can improve the estimation of extreme risk measures on the challenging situation of small sample size and high dimension. The method will be applied to the insurance in the agricultural sector, whose yields and prices are directly exposed to climatic and financial risks and depend on a large number of external factors. The analysis will be conducted on a survey of French farmer’s income belonging to the Farm Accountancy Data Network (FADN), in collaboration with Geoffroy Enjolras (CERAG, UGA).
