PhD position summary/title: 1 PhD Position in Cell Deformability-Based Diagnosis of Hematological Diseases
The early diagnosis of cancer is now accepted to be a key determinant of patient outcome. Since cancer cells exhibit alterations in their mechanical properties (when compared to their benign counterparts), cell mechano-phenotype is an emerging hallmark of cancer, with the potential to dramatically improve both detection and subsequent classification. Accordingly, mechanical phenotyping through the measurement of cell deformability represents a potentially powerful diagnostic tool. Indeed, since cells undergo physical and biological changes during cancer progression, a complete understanding of such changes offers much in developing new diagnosis and treatment methods. Unfortunately, the application of single-cell deformability measurements is far from widespread, due to a lack of standardized metrics and difficulties associated with performing high-throughput measurements on complex biological samples. With this project, we aim to make single-cell deformability measurements suitable for routine diagnostic analysis in clinics, opening a new approach in cell-based diagnostics. Specifically, we bring together an actively collaborating cohort of scientists and clinicians with the aim of dramatically improving the potency of deformability-based diagnosis for hematological diseases, such as anemia, lymphoma and leukemia.

PhD position summary/title: Doctorate in Geology/Geochronology
You will apply a range of cutting-edge analytical methods to study the development of large magmatic systems, with a particular focus on nested caldera complexes. The project will involve extensive field work in the Alps, geochemical characterisation, and high-precision geochronology on a range of volcanic and plutonic rocks, to arrive at an integrated model for the temporal and spatial development of the magmatism at a range of scales (regional to caldera complex-scale). PhD position summary/title: Doctoral position on the mechanics of straw-based architected materials
This doctoral project combines theory and experiments to study the mechanical behavior of a novel class of architected materials incorporating multistable members inspired by “bendy straws”. The first phase of the project will generalize an existing planar model of straws to 3D, formulate the latter as a finite element scheme (FE) and complete the implementation within an open-source FE framework. This model will be extended to consider complex asymmetric segments as well as structures embedded with incompressible and compressible fluids. The developed model will be experimentally validated on straw-based structures manufactured in the lab. The validation will involve 1D, 2D, and 3D experimental characterization of straws and straw-based structures under multiaxial imposed displacements. Structures are produced in-house through, among others, methods of additive manufacturing. Experimental characterization will employ image tracking and data analysis techniques and adjust those to the problems at hand. Finally, based on the validated model we will utilize machine learning-based inverse design to create structures with as-designed nonlinear mechanical performance as well as programmed reconfiguration. This project will collaborate closely with another team that studies intertwined structures, in order to extend the model and consider the effect of contact and to combine intertwined with straw-based structures towards a novel class of multifunctional architected materials.

PhD position summary/title: PhD candidate for modelling & optimising highly efficient drive systems for E-vehicles based on GaN devices
We are looking for outstanding, highly motivated people interested in pursuing PhD research on highly efficient drive systems for electric vehicles. For achieving high efficiency in a wide operating range, different 3-level inverter topologies and modulation schemes for drive systems should be modelled and optimised in this research project. Considering a wide operating range is important as the inverter is directly connected to the battery, which has a wide voltage range depending on the state of charge. Furthermore, the drive system is operated in many use cases only at a relatively low power level compared to nominal power, so that also partial load operation is also important to consider in the design phase. The efficiency increase should be achieved by using optimised 3-level inverter topologies, which also allow for to reduction of the losses in the electrical machine due to lower ripple currents. Furthermore, new wide band gap depletion mode GaN HEMT devices in a direct-driven cascade configuration should be investigated, which allows reducing conduction as well as switching losses thus enabling a wider range of switching frequency at high-efficiency levels. A disadvantage of 3L inverters is the higher number of switches, which results in higher costs and which require more space. To still benefit from the 3L topology, a design trade-off between the inverter and the motor losses, which results in overall minimal losses, and an optimised PCB power module layout are necessary. The optimal design should be identified based on comprehensive models and an optimisation procedure considering the Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicle Test Procedure (WLTP). In the optimisation, different 3L topologies, modulation schemes, a wide switching frequency range, and different motor types as well as basic control strategies should be considered, for identifying the best topology and the optimal operating parameters for the different operating points. In the final step, you should validate the optimised design with a prototype system.
