PhD position summary/title: PhD Candidate in Computer Architecture Focusing on Specialized Architectures for the Internet of Things (IoT)

The Internet of Things (IoT) requires highly efficient Ultra-Low Power (ULP) systems to enable interacting with the environment at scale. These ULP-systems must communicate wirelessly and rely solely on energy harvesting – as manually retrieving 100s or 1000s of systems to capture data or change batteries is costly and impractical. The ULP system must hence be extremely energy efficient which can be achieved by specialization, i.e., tailoring the computer architecture to the energy-critical computation of each application. Unfortunately, it is not economically viable to create specialized architectures for all possible applications.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Candidate within Marine Hydrodynamics related to the topic: Wave- and current load effects of moored closed aquaculture cages

With motivation to avoid sea-lice contamination and reducing the environmental footprint of fish farming, closed fish containment systems (closed cages) have been developed and installed at several locations in Norway. Although most relevant for sheltered locations, wave and current exposure must still be considered. Common for the different concepts is the presence of a free surface inside the containment, typically covering a large fraction of the structure’s water-plane area. The restricted free surface means sloshing will occur when the cage is set into motion, for instance from external wave exposure. Sloshing has a significant influence on the structural responses and mooring loads, as documented in several research projects. Despite several studies, closed cages are still considered novel structures.

PhD position summary/title: PERSEUS – PhD Candidate within “Dynamic Interdependency Models for Critical Infrastructures”

At the Department of Information Security and Communication Technology we have a vacancy for a PhD Candidate in “Dynamic Interdependency Models for Critical Infrastructures”.

Graph and combinatorial models representing dependencies and interdependencies and flows of resources have been studied intensively also with a view to representing susceptibility of represented structures to attacks. However, we are interested to study highly sparse dynamic graphs and structures within these as well as efficient algorithms that allow the determination particularly of local properties. This is motivated by the application domains of modern infrastructure networks whose topology will usually be dynamic and may only be partially known; this would render insights into properties that would e.g. indicate vulnerabilities obsolete or wrong. The ability to obtain timely insights also for large networks would hence allow targeted responses and resilience mechanisms that are widely applicable.

At the Department of Information Security and Communication Technology we have a vacancy for a PhD candidate in “Reference Systems for a Cyber-physical Range”.

Cyber Physical Systems constitute the core of Critical Infrastructures, yet their architectural and operational characteristics are not thoroughly captured by contemporary cyber ranges, which are commonly narrow in scope or purposefully aligned with subsections of specific target systems. The anticipated use of the physical reference environments investigated, modelled, and integrated in this work will be twofold, namely as demonstrators for education and dissemination, but also as testbeds for activities related to research and training.

NTNU is consistently ranked in the top one percentage among the world’s universities, usually in the 101–500 range depending on ranking.

NTNU has the main national responsibility for education and research in engineering and technology, and is the successor of Norway’s preeminent engineering university, the Norwegian Institute of Technology (NTH), established by Parliament in 1910 as Norway’s national engineering university. In addition to engineering and natural sciences, the university offers higher education in other academic disciplines ranging from medicine, psychology, social sciences, the arts, teacher education, architecture and fine art. NTNU is well known for its close collaboration with industry, and particularly with its R&D partner SINTEF, which provided it with the biggest industrial link among all the technical universities in the world.
