(04) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Position: Molecular Genetic Mechanisms of Male Killing in the Spiroplasma-Drosophila Symbiosis

This position is focused on the bacterial symbiont Spiroplasma poulsonii and characterization of the toxin used by the bacterium to kill male offspring in Drosophila melanogaster. Spiroplasma secretes an androcidin (known as Spaid) that causes this dramatic phenotype. Remarkably, Spaid distinguishes between male and female hosts during infection, killing 99-100% of male offspring while leaving females unharmed. Evidence suggests that Spaid acts through the sex determination pathway to 1) recognize male from female host and 2) induce widespread apoptosis in male but not female embryos. How Spaid carries out these molecular functions is unclear. It is also unclear if D. melanogaster host populations have evolved resistance to Spaid toxicity. Understanding which host proteins Spaid interacts with during infection, whether polymorphisms within these proteins confer toxin resistance, and how modification of these proteins causes male killing will illustrate how a naturally occurring host-parasite interaction unfolds at the molecular level. This project will involve characterizing the molecular targets of Spaid and identifying genetic suppressors in the natural host.

(07) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Post-Doctoral Fellow

Applications are sought for a full-time, NIH-funded postdoctoral scholar position at Indiana University at Bloomington (IUB). The successful candidate will be a team member of the interdisciplinary research program in the laboratory of Dr. Hui-Chen Lu (http://www.lulaboratory.com/) in the Gill Center (http://www.indiana.edu/~gillctr/Lu.shtml) at IUB.  Cannabis use continues to be high among adolescents and is increasing in young adults.  This is a significant public health issue as heavy cannabis use during this period is linked to an increased risk for developing  affective, addictive, or psychotic disorders later in life.  We are interested to determine whether adolescent cannabis use disrupts the maturation of medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC), critical for working memory and executive function. We have developed a mouse model of adolescent cannabis use by adolescent administration of Δ-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the primary intoxicating component of cannabis and found enduring deficits in PFC-mediated behaviors. With support from NIDA, we aim to elucidate the mechanisms underlying these findings and evaluate mechanism-based potential therapies to reverse the behavioral and cognitive abnormalities caused by adolescent THC. A combination of electrophysiology, multi-photon imaging, viral vectors, molecular and biochemical approaches have been established in Lu laboratory.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Fellow: Integrating Proximate & Evolutionary Mechanisms of Behavior

Our lab investigates the genomic and physiological bases of behavioral plasticity, and how these mechanisms change over evolutionary time. We approach these questions by combining tools from animal behavior, evolutionary biology, neuroendocrinology, and genomics, using free-living songbirds. We are seeking a candidate to develop an original research project that integrates both proximate and evolutionary mechanisms shaping aggressive behavior in birds, with a focus on cavity-nesting birds and/or their non-cavity-nesting relatives.

(11) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Fellow in Host-Microbe Interaction

Successful host-associated microbes sculpt host cell biology in ways that are useful to them. Often, these changes in host biology alter the ability of other microbes to colonize, protecting the host niche for the first microbe. For example, colonization of insects with Wolbachia endosymbionts can preclude infection by viruses. This fact has led to the deployment of Wolbachia-infected mosquitos across the globe to limit the transmission of vectored diseases. We have identified RNA modifications induced by Wolbachia that directly alter Drosophila cell biology and affect the ability of viruses to colonize. Wolbachia upregulates a host methyltransferase to limit virus replication and our preliminary data suggest that the virus genome itself is modified in a Wolbachia infected cell, altering mRNA stability. These data lead us to ask “How does a microbial symbiont alter the epitranscriptomic landscape of host cells?”

(17) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Fellow

The water potential of soils and plants directly controls the flow of water through ecosystems and is a key regulator of plant mortality risk during droughts and heat waves. However, observations of water potential (commonly abbreviated with the Greek letter ‘Psi’) are frequently scarce, inaccessible, and plagued by methodological challenges that hinder the synthetic research necessary to anticipate, and prepare for, climate change impacts in natural and managed ecosystems. PSInet – a new network of data and people – will confront this information gap by: 1 promoting consistent collection and interpretation of water potential data through shared protocols, best practices, and early career training, 2 creating an open, global database for plant and soil water potential time series, and 3 conducting synthesis research enabled by the PSInet database through supporting a diverse community of scientists and practitioners.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Research Fellow

The project is entitled “Attributions of Mathematical Excellence in Teaching and Learning” (AMETL). The central hypothesis is that teachers’ beliefs attributing mathematical excellence to innate ability, cultural and social background, or personal characteristics widen the opportunity gap by resonating implicit bias and stereotype threat, and moreover, that beliefs attributing mathematical excellence to instructional opportunities narrow the gap because these beliefs amplify teacher expectations. The project comprises three studies focused on (1) item development to construct the AMETL scale; (2) validating the internal structure of the scale and determining relations with other variables; and (3) understanding relations between teachers’ scores on the AMETL scale with their classroom instruction. The overall research project is a collaboration between multiple partners at Indiana University, Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI), University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and Georgia State University. (24) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc In the Biology of Dung Beetle Microbiome Interactions

The position advertised will focus on the interactions between dung beetle hosts and their microbiome. Our recent work has shown that dung beetles (genus Onthophagus) rely on a maternally transmitted, complex microbiome in order to process dung (a recalcitrant diet), support their larval development (especially under stress), and defend themselves against entomopathic fungi. Yet the microbial, physiological and other mechanisms underlying these interactions remain unknown. Likewise, Onthophagus beetles are extraordinarily speciose, including invasive species currently undergoing range expansions paralleled by rapid local adaptation. Yet the role of host-microbiome interactions in host invasions, local adaptations, and the evolution of reproductive isolation remain to be explored. The main objective of this position is therefore to advance our mechanistic understanding of roles played by dung beetle-associated microbes in host development, physiology, ecology, and evolution, and likewise how varying degrees of host dependency have impacted the evolution of select microbial taxa. The postdoctoral researcher will also have opportunity to develop independent lines of research in these and related areas.
