Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Post Doctoral Scholar

A postdoctoral position is available in the laboratory of Dr. Xue Han, in the Department of Microbial Infection and Immunity and Pelotonia Institute for Immuno-Oncology (PIIO) at the Ohio State University. The main research directions of the Han Lab are to 1) study new mechanisms of immune escape in solid tumors and hematologic malignancies; 2) identify novel immunomodulating pathways and their applications to treat cancer, inflammation, and autoimmune diseases; 3) understand the mechanisms of immune-related adverse events caused by cancer immunotherapy. During her earlier research career in Dr. Lieping Chen’s lab in Yale University, Dr. Han has led several vital projects to characterize PD-1H (VISTA), a recently identified immunomodulating molecule. 1) For the first time, identifying PD-1H as a suppressive receptor on hematopoietic cells and firstly describing promoted anti-tumor immunity in PD-1H deficient mice (J Clinic Invest, 2014). 2) Working with structure biologist, solving crystal structure and finding key unique structural features of PD-1H (PNAS, 2020). 3) In addition to basic immunobiology, Dr. Han’s work shows that PD-1H is an essential molecule to control autoimmune lupus (Science Translational Medicine, 2019). This study led to the collaboration with a biotech company to develop therapeutic agents to treat human autoimmune and inflammation diseases. 4) In addition to solid tumor, Dr. Han and her colleagues find that PD-1H can mediate immune evasion in myeloid leukemia, in which PD-1/PD-L1 immunotherapy doesn’t work well in clinic (manuscript in submission).

About The Ohio State University, United States – Official Website

The Ohio State University, commonly Ohio State or OSU, is a public land-grant research university in Columbus, Ohio. The flagship of the University System of Ohio, it is considered a Public Ivy, and has been ranked by major institutional rankings as among the best public universities in the United States. Founded in 1870 as the state’s land-grant university and the ninth university in Ohio with the Morrill Act of 1862, Ohio State was originally known as the Ohio Agricultural and Mechanical College and focused on various agricultural and mechanical disciplines but it developed into a comprehensive university under the direction of then-Governor and later U.S. president Rutherford B. Hayes, and in 1878 the Ohio General Assembly passed a law changing the name to “the Ohio State University” and broadening the scope of the university. Admission standards greatly tightened and became more selective throughout the 1990s and 2000s.

Ohio State’s political science department and faculty have greatly contributed to the construction and development of the constructivist and realist schools of international relations; a 2004 LSE study ranked the program as 1st among a public institution and 4th overall in the world. A member of the Association of American Universities, Ohio State is a leading producer of Fulbright Scholars, and is the only school in North America that offers an ABET-accredited undergraduate degree in welding engineering. The university’s endowment of $5.29 billion in 2020 is among the most in the world.
