PhD position summary/title: Classifying net zero strategies in construction projects and the extent of their effectiveness
Whereas the literature provides insights into a range of net zero strategies that are currently being implemented across the construction sector, there is an emphasis on certain practices over others (often operational-related) suggesting a lack of definitive classification of the full range of operational and embedded strategies that could be utilised.
The fluidity of the term and the multidisciplinary nature of the various practices may compromise the feasibility of achieving a net zero status suggesting the necessity for adopting a fully integrated approach at the different construction and occupancy stages.
This study aims to classify net zero strategies in construction projects and measure the contribution of integrating operational and embodied emission considerations to the success of achieving net zero buildings. The study aim will be achieved through conducting semi-structured interviews with practitioners and measuring emissions of selected case studies.

PhD position summary/title: Fire performance and durability of integrated engineered timber products
This project addresses knowledge gaps surrounding the fire fuel load contribution of engineered timber products (following previous work by the principal supervisor on softwoods). Initially, CLT, LVL, OSB/3 and glulam specimens provided by industry partners will be subjected to a range of specific, controlled temperatures using ceramic heating pads, with the power input, mass loss, and any visual deterioration recorded. This will provide accurate information regarding enthalpic input and associated effects during the development of a fire, with Milner Associates advising on interpretation and application.
Numerical analysis (COMSOL FEA) of heat flow and material degradation will be validated against these experiments, allowing for more wide-ranging parametric studies to be conducted. By applying these models to full-scale structural systems, e.g., walls, floor panels and modules, the effects of thermal degradation on timber components and fasteners will also be investigated; of particular interest are integrated wall modules with increasingly thick layers of insulation to satisfy revised building energy requirements in Approved Document L.

PhD position summary/title: Improving public engagement on disruptive green technology projects
This research will critically examine the efficacy of current public engagement efforts for disruptive green technology projects. Within project management studies, public engagement has conventionally been addressed under the remit of stakeholder management (Chow & Leiringer, 2020), but this fails to capture the way stakeholder networks evolve dynamically over time (Missonier & Loufrani-Fedida, 2014). Moreover, opposition to urban development has often been labelled as NIMBY-ism (Carley et al., 2020), further alienating disenfranchised community groups.
This research will take the alternative debates to NIMBY-ism and the deficit model as its starting point to establish an integrated framework for public engagement (cf. Burningham et al., 2015). The goal is to develop two-way communication channels that enable the public to participate in decision-making processes and to enable the harnessing of local knowledge to improve project outcomes.

PhD position summary/title: Low-cost high-performance catalysts for green hydrogen production from wastewater
Huge volumes of wastewater are produced from both residential, commercial, and industrial settings. Advanced processes to clean and purify this water already exist, however, there remains both liquid and solid products from these processes that require disposal. While conventionally seen as waste, these products do in fact contain significant amounts of extractable hydrogen that can be exploited. This embraces the ethos of a circular economy in which products are reused at their highest value, as opposed to being disposed of, to improve sustainability and eliminate waste and pollution.
This project will explore the feasibility of catalytically cracking and pyrolyzing compounds in these waste streams to produce hydrogen effectively and efficiently and with minimal impurities that could limit its application in downstream processes. The project will involve designing and testing thermal catalytic processes and assessing product distributions to understand their feasibility in an industrial setting. You will gain experience in process chemistry and chemical engineering, material synthesis, and catalytic science. You will also interact and work with a range of industrial partners within the CDT to build experience in addressing real-world challenges and solutions in sustainable hydrogen production.
