PhD position summary/title: Doctoral candidate (PhD student) in the field of soft matter physics applied in robotics

You will be a member of the ESMP group at DPhyMS, FSTM, working under the supervision of the group leader Jan Lagerwall in close collaboration with the Automation & Robotics Research Group (ARG), led by Holger Voos, at the UL Centre for Security, Reliability and Trust (SnT). You will be refining our recent method for making Cholesteric Liquid Crystal Elastomer (CLCE) sheets and fibres, adding new shapes like hollow spheres and tori and integrating them in strain and force sensing set-ups based on the mechanochromic response of CLCEs, i.e., their colour changes predictably and reversibly in response to mechanical strain. You will then incorporate the sensors in soft robotic arms and grippers mounted on unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), enabling real-time monitoring of the operation of the UAV as it manipulates objects using the arm/gripper. Your tasks range from preparation of CLCEs in unconventional shapes and large size, to the development of electronic set-ups (based on, e.g., Arduino or Raspberry Pi) for illuminating and optically monitoring each CLCE, to writing code (e.g. Python) for real-time translation of the optical signals into strain and force data to be sent to the robot. To achieve this and to integrate the sensors in the UAVs, you will be working in close collaboration with two PhD candidates from ARG. While being rooted in soft matter physics/chemistry and photonics, your part of the project thus branches into mechanical, computer and robotics engineering.

The project is through the ArcelorMittal Chair of Steel Construction, under the collaboration between the University of Luxembourg and ArcelorMittal. It deals with the investigation of structural steel elements for reuse in a circular economy and works at the material level by using destructive- and nondestructive steel material test and measurement methods. These procedures will allow for determining the steel properties for reuse in a new construction. Besides metallurgical and experimental work in the laboratory and on-site, the use of Artificial Intelligence will help to optimize the process and make more feasible use of nondestructive measurements.

PhD position summary/title: Doctoral Candidate (PhD student) in 6G Communications

The research group focuses on wireless/satellite communications and networking and is headed by Prof. Symeon Chatzinotas. The research areas focus on the formulation, modelling, design, and analysis of future 5G and beyond communication networks that are capable of supporting new services in a cost-efficient manner. Use cases of interest include IoT verticals, unmanned aerial vehicles, integrated satellite-space-terrestrial networks, quantum communications and key distribution, spectrum management and coexistence, tactile Internet, and autonomous transportation. As far as technical enablers are concerned, we leverage expertise on massive MIMO cell-free communications, smart-radio environments through the use of intelligent surfaces, machine-type and ultra-reliable and low-latency communications, edge computing and caching, RAN slicing, and network softwarization and visualization. Finally, due to the large-scale nature, complexity, and heterogeneity of 5G and beyond networks, for their analysis and optimization we use tools such as artificial intelligence/machine learning, graph theory and graph-signal processing, and convex/non-convex optimization. Furthermore, our activities are experimentally driven and supported by the SDR CommLab, the SDN Lab, the 6G-Space Lab, our SW Simulators, and our OTA Facilties. PhD position summary/title: PhD candidate in Sustainability in Space – Designing Future Space Services and Infrastructure

The current servitization of space is introducing profound change, challenging established companies with new business models, and significantly lowering the entry barrier to space. New types of services such as Mission-as-a-Service, Satellite-as-a-Service, Constellation-as-a-Service, etc., are emerging at a rapid pace. This is just the beginning. The future might see a space infrastructure on which new space services could be built at low cost and risk, similar to business models enabled by the internet, cloud computing, etc. on Earth. Key enablers for such an infrastructure are communications and data infrastructures and new computing approaches such as edge computing, fog computing, cloud computing. These combined services and infrastructure elements (also called product-service system) could also lead to significant sustainability benefits via replacing physical products by services. Instead of developing a spacecraft which would impact the environment via its production, launch and space debris, various space assets and their capacities are efficiently used, reducing the environmental impact significantly (e.g. constellation shared between multiple users instead of each one launching a separate constellation). However, these new space services and infrastructure are largely unexplored to date, despite their huge potential.
