PhD position summary/title: PhD scholarship in Femtosecond Fiber Lasers and Low-Noise Supercontinuum Sources – DTU Electro

If you aim at scientific excellence and want to establish a career as a scientist within fiber lasers and supercontinum sources and their high-level applications within imaging and spectroscopy, then we have the ideal opportunity for you. Come and be a part of the “Table-Top Synchrotron” project and one of the world’s strongest groups in this field in our quest to develop supercontinuum sources that outcompete synchrotrons from the deep ultraviolet (deep-UV) down to 33 nm to the mid-infrared (mid-IR) up to 15 µm.

To cover this enormous bandwidth we are developing 4 new all-fiber supercontinuum sources, or beamlines. The UV beamline 1 is based on gas-filled hollow-core silica fibers and meta-surfaces and will cover 33-1100 nm, extending the record 113 nm UV edge to 33 nm. The near-IR beamline 2 is based on solid-core silica photonic crystal fibers covering 400-2400 nm and will use so-called all-normal dispersion (ANDi) fibers pumped with femtosecond lasers to achieve record low noise for spectroscopy and Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) imaging applications. The same technology will be used for the low-noise beamline 3 covering 1-5 µm using commercial fluoride fiber. Beamline 4 will push the record IR edge in all-fiber mid-IR supercontinuum sources to 15 µm by using chalcogenide soft-glass fibers, in particular in-house fabricated sulfide, selenide, and telluride fibers.

PhD position summary/title: PhD scholarship in maritime pollution: Linking pressure from mixture toxicity of shipping discharges to loss of biodiversity in the marine environment – DTU Aqua

Are you interested in the interaction of biodiversity, climate and marine pollution, and have a fondness for the smallest organisms in the world’s oceans (=plankton)? If yes, maybe this is a PhD for you! One of the main challenges in assessing the anthropogenic impacts on the marine ecosystem is the lack of knowledge on cumulative effects of contaminants and their interaction with the climate change and ecosystem properties. Therefore, if we want to accurately model the risks that human activities pose to the marine ecosystems and the services that they provide, we must understand and be able to quantify the interactions between cumulative impacts and species resilience. This interaction and its integration into modelling is the primary aim of this PhD, focusing on the stressors originating from shipping discharges. The current efforts to decarbonize the shipping and reduce air emissions request new types of solutions, which in some cases – as with the scrubbers that merely transfer air pollution to marine pollution – have resulted in unwanted effects on marine biodiversity. With this PhD you will contribute to the understanding of ecosystem damage from mixture toxicity and support a better management of environmental effects of anthropogenic activities. You will be part of the inter-disciplinary and international research efforts for understanding and quantifying the anthropogenic impacts on the marine environment.

PhD position summary/title: PhD scholarship in A Digitalization Approach for Wall Shear Stress Estimation – DTU Health Tech

Are you passionate about revolutionizing medical imaging with cutting-edge machine learning? Do you aspire to contribute to groundbreaking research that significantly enhances clinical workflows and patient outcomes? The Technical University of Denmark (DTU) is seeking ambitious candidates for a PhD position focused on developing an innovative high-frame-rate ultrasound-based wall shear stress (WSS) estimation framework. This project aims to transform stroke prevention by integrating state-of-the-art machine learning techniques with advanced ultrasound imaging.

Stroke, a leading cause of death worldwide, often results from the rupture of fatty deposits called plaques in aging blood vessels, such as the carotid artery. These ruptured plaques release blood clots that travel to the brain, blocking blood vessels and causing severe brain function impairment. Wall shear stress (WSS) plays a critical role in plaque formation and rupture, influencing how blood flow interacts with vessel walls. With an aging population, Europe is projected to experience 1.5 million stroke cases annually by 2025. There is an urgent need for better tools to assess plaque development and predict rupture risk, as current methods, like MRI, are costly and cannot capture WSS dynamics. Ultrasound offers a real-time, cost-effective solution for mapping these dynamics.

This PhD project aims to develop a novel WSS estimation framework by integrating high-frame-rate ultrasound with advanced deep learning algorithms, enabling accurate measurements. The project will address key research challenges, including robust vessel wall segmentation and flow estimation using physics-informed neural networks.
