PhD position summary/title:  PhD in Artificial Intelligence for energy applications

Our research group currently is involved in research projects in the energy domain, including mostly smart grid applications. The focus of our AI4E team in these projects is on data analytics, as well as coordination algorithms for, e.g., demand response. A major objective of the applications we want to support is to accommodate large penetration of renewable sources (wind mills, solar panels, etc.) without requiring excessive investments in the power grid infrastructure. This involves characterizing and eventually predicting both power generation (from renewables) and consumption behavior (and its flexibility, e.g., what portion thereof can be shifted in time), using data analytics techniques, constructing generative models, applying machine learning, etc. The next step is to actively control power consumption, e.g., by developing algorithms for energy management systems (to steer power consumption and/or decide what to use local production for, e.g., push into the grid or local storage).

PhD position summary/title: Project title: Development of new machine learning methods that distinguish aleatoric and epistemic uncertainty

In this PhD project we intend to develop and evaluate several ML methodologies to quantify uncertainty. We want to explore four different ways of quantifying uncertainty, resulting in four different tasks. The first two approaches, in which distributions or sets are used to express uncertainty, respectively, are commonly used in supervised learning. Those approaches typically only take aleatoric uncertainty into account, i.e., uncertainty that cannot be reduced by collecting data of more patients. The last two approaches, which express a second-order uncertainty via distributions of distributions or sets of distributions, are less established in supervised learning. However, those approaches are gaining popularity, because they are able to represent epistemic uncertainty as well, i.e., uncertainty that arises because of working with limited sample sizes, and that can be reduced by collecting more data.

PhD position summary/title: Title: Cost-benefit analysis of different types of training for worker re-skilling in a production environment.

Abstract: The selection and presence of the right person has become significantly important since today’s knowledge society supports the specialization of personnel and the development of additional skills to improve the satisfactory execution of activities. To support workers with the processing of tasks in a production environment, we analyze the cost benefits resulting from different forms of training such as self-learning (and forgetting), on-the-job training and off-the-job training to re-skill the workforce. Each of these types of training is characterized by (i) a different degree of learning impacting the efficiency and/or quality a worker can process tasks, known as the up-skilling consequences, (ii) a training duration during which workers cannot process other tasks, and (iii) a training cost. The objectives of this research are

Thermo-Elastohydrodynamic Lubrication (TEHL) is a specific lubrication regime that typically occurs in classic machine components such as rolling element bearings, gears, cam-follower systems, etc., and is therefore very relevant in many machine applications. TEHL is characterized by thin lubricant films (50 nm-1 m) in which the hydrodynamic pressure can reach values up to GPa range (1-4 GPa), inducing elastic deformation of the opposing contact surfaces in the order of the film thickness. At such high pressures, the lubricant becomes compressible and behaves in a highly non-Newtonian way by local solidification and shear-thinning.

PhD position summary/title:

Advances in TeraHertz technology have driven researchers to consider systems that are highly non-linear and strongly radiating. Modelling these systems requires methods that are based on time-stepping, and that can accurately describe unbounded regions. The use of methods such as the finite element method, the method of moments, or the finite difference time-domain method – if at all applicable – results in unacceptable computational costs, and large errors in dispersion and radiation characteristics. The right tool to model this class of devices is the time domain boundary element method. Unfortunately a number of challenges remain, stopping designers from deploying time domain boundary element methods in the modelling of realistic devices and systems.

The candidate will help collect forest inventory data (tree diameter and height) and species traits in nine clusters of existing plots distributed across the undersampled Democratic Republic of Congo and (possibly) Gabon. She/he will use forest inventory data to compare structural attributes (including stem density, basal area, average wood density and canopy height) among the plots and among the two regions (Atlantic forests of Gabon versus Inner Congo basin). This will shed light on the question whether inner Congo basin carbon stocks are truly lower than in other African regions. Forest remeasurement data will allow quantification of carbon gains and carbon losses between consecutive remeasurements (plots were remeasured every 2 to 4 years). This will ultimately allow quantifying the (dynamics of the) carbon sink over the 2010-2020 decade and address the question whether the inner Congo basin carbon sink is lower or higher than in other regions of central Africa. Finally, the longest monitored plots will allow tracking down changes in taxonomic and functional composition, addressing the question whether African forest species communities are truly shifting towards a higher share of drought-adapted species.

PhD position summary/title: PhD position in the CANOPI project – Drought mitigation strategies work package

The CANOPI project is transdisciplinary and divided into five complementary work packages, each supported by one doctoral work. This position is relative to the fourth work package addressing the following question: “Which drought mitigation strategies do African canopy tree species use?” You will focus on the relevance of two fascinating processes to canopy functioning in central Africa: (i) foliar water uptake, and (ii) bark photosynthesis. There is increasing evidence that these two processes may become especially important for maintaining the physiological activity in leaves and woody tissues of drought-stressed trees. We will specifically investigate these drought mitigation strategies using an ecophysiological approach that may set new standards in the functional ecology of tropical trees. The candidate will first review foliar water uptake (FWU) and bark photosynthesis as drought mitigation strategies. She/he will help developing a state-of-the-art measurement protocol to quantify FWU and bark photosynthesis using cut leaves, cut branches and intact plants. She/he will screen in situ the FWU capacity and bark photosynthesis potential of timber species in a nursery and plantations in Bambidie, Gabon. Context – High performant and power-dense electromechanical systems (e.g. weaving looms, compressors, gearboxes, drivetrains, …) need oil lubrication to reduce friction and resulting wear in rolling element bearings to efficiently dissipate heat from the contact points.

On the one hand, these systems contain multiple oil-lubricated bearings of various types, which typically operate under different and/or varying conditions (load, speed, temperature). Ideally, the lubrication properties have been adapted to these operating conditions. However, in practice, each individual bearing operates under suboptimal lubrication conditions, leading globally to an increased Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) due to reduced energy efficiency, reduced component lifetime, and increased maintenance and downtime.

About Ghent University, Belgium  –Official Website

Ghent University is a public research university located in Ghent, Belgium. It was established in 1817 by King William I of the Netherlands. After the Belgian revolution of 1830, the newly formed Belgian state began to administer the university. In 1930, the university became the first Dutch-speaking university in Belgium, whereas French had previously been the standard academic language in what was Université de Gand. In 1991, it was granted major autonomy and changed its name accordingly from State University of Ghent (Dutch: Rijksuniversiteit Gent, abbreviated as RUG) to its current designation.

In contrast to the Catholic University of Leuven or the Free University of Brussels, UGent considers itself a pluralist university in a special sense, i.e. not connected to any particular religion or political ideology. Its motto Inter Utrumque (‘In Between Both Extremes’), on the coat of arms, suggests the acquisition of wisdom and science comes only in an atmosphere of peace, when the institution is fully supported by the monarchy and fatherland.

Ghent University is one of the biggest Flemish universities, consisting of 44,000 students and 9,000 staff members. The University also supports the University Library and the University Hospital, which is one of the largest hospitals in Belgium. It is one of the greatest beneficiaries of funding from the Research Foundation – Flanders (FWO). Ghent University consistently rates among the top 100 universities in the world.
