PhD position summary/title: PhD position on Gray-box modeling techniques for modular electrical drives
Range anxiety and packaging are the major barriers in the large-scale electrification of various mobility segments ranging from passenger vehicle to commercial vehicles. There is not one electrical drive technology which can answer the need of different solutions. Every application needs its own specific design solution, which need to be evaluated in the so called feasibility studies. The target of such studies include optimization calculations for total cost of ownership, efficiency, packaging, etc. By introducing modular (scalable) motor solutions, component pre-development (thus system) costs can be reduced. Furthermore, scalable solutions are ideal for combined efficiency packaging optimization (of the vehicle), which either increases the range or the efficiency. Grey-box models provide a good balance between high-accuracy and time-optimized calculation methods, which make them ideal for scalable electrical machine solutions.

PhD position summary/title: PhD position on Tumor and Lymph node on chip platform for cancer studies
Cancer is the second cause of death worldwide and it is estimated that metastases are responsible for as many as 90% of cancer deaths. It is believed that up to 70% of metastases occurs through the lymphatic system with lymphatic vessels and lymph nodes (LN) mediating the process, while the rest of them are of hematogenous origin and occur through the blood stream. LN metastasis is an independent indicator of poor prognosis. LNs are responsible for the immune response against external threats as well as the elimination of tumor cells which are considered foreign entities. Tumor cells however, have found ways to escape the immune system and even colonize LNs, which would be considered an otherwise “hostile” environment. Initially, this is achieved through secreted signals that travel to the lymph node and prepare the field, while later cancer cells migrating and homing the LN actively suppress the local immune response.

PhD position summary/title: PhD on Astronomic black holes on a chip?
This PhD project aims to study and realize black hole event horizon analogues on a chip using the interacting between spin-currents and spin-waves (magnons). The work will mainly be experimental using state of the art deposition of magnetic materials and nanofabrication methods to create unique devices to address the underlying physics questions. Finally, these devices (the chip) will be the playground where we will try to generate the black and white hole event horizon analogues using inductive methods in a dedicated temperature controlled probe station. Realizing these horizons will open up many applications in the field of magnonics as it could pave the path to realize a spin-wave laser.

PhD position summary/title: PhD in Information Systems/Business Intelligence
Supply chain planning involves planning the production of finished products and the procurement of the materials needed to produce them, in the most efficient, customer friendly and environmentally friendly way possible. One of the challenges of supply chain planning is that, during the execution of the plan, it must often be adapted. For example, because parts are delivered late or because production is delayed. This leads to changes to the plan that are often ad-hoc and suboptimal, and cause planning ‘nervousness’, i.e. frequent planning changes. Consequently, supply chain planning can benefit from planning techniques that assist with the day-to-day adaptations of the supply chain plan.

PhD position summary/title: PhD on “Improving automated rational choice through metacognition”
Supply chain and logistics planning problems can be seen as optimisation problems that require collecting as much relevant information as possible, determining possible choices, and selecting the action with the highest expected utility. They thus lend themselves to AI solutions that use the same model: “… we build optimising machines, we feed objectives into them, and off they go.” (Russell 2019, 172). “Rational choice” in this sense assumes a given utility function. But apart from well-known problems with rational choice in real-world environments (e.g. uncertainty, dynamic changes, other agents, non-discreteness of actions), we know from the human example that highly complex choices in real-world environments require metacognition

PhD position summary/title: PhD; Shaping turbulence with smart particles: experiments with magnetic beads.
In this project, the PhD candidate will investigate experimentally the role of magnetic particles in turbulence at low and high densities with the possibility to steer the turbulence via external (time-dependent) magnetic fields. An experimental setup for the generation of homogeneous isotropic turbulence (French washing machine) will be designed. It should satisfy certain constraints such as optical access for Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) and 3D Particle Tracking Velocimetry (3D PTV) applications and facilities for the production of magnetic fields to control the dynamics of the particles. Measurement of magnetic particle aggregates as well as the statistics of turbulence will be made possible as function of turbulence and magnetic field strength. Typical size of the magnetic beads will be similar to the dissipative scale of turbulence and aggregates can form strings as long as the integral scale. Strong interaction and exchange of data with parallel PhD projects on chiral particles in turbulence and numerical studies of such systems is anticipated.
