Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title:  Postdoctoral Associate

We have developed a novel computational framework to improve understanding of the underlying dynamics that lead to escalating regional hurricane disaster risk, and to support design and analysis of public policy interventions to address them. The framework explicitly considers perspectives of and interactions among multiple key stakeholders (government, primary insurers, and homeowners), and multiple diverse interventions (e.g., home strengthening, acquisition, and insurance). It includes a computable general equilibrium model to relate hurricane damage to gross domestic product, labor wages, savings, etc. We envision the person hired in this position to extend this framework to create an optimization model that represents the government’s interest in controlling hurricane risk by balancing economic growth, equity, and regional loss exposure to determine how to allocate funds for insurance subsidies, mitigation grants and acquisition programs.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Associate – Department of Natural Resources and the Environment

When introduced plant species become invasive and the development of biological weed control is often the only long-term solution for their sustainable management. For several decades, the Blossey lab at Cornell University has developed biocontrol programs targeting invasive plants of conservation concern as well as novel ways to assess safety and direct and indirect outcomes of insects post release. We are now expanding our team to further enhance biocontrol programs targeting invasive Phragmites, Japanese knotweeds (Reynoutria spp.) and water chestnut (Trapa natans). These different programs are in various stages of development and the work program may involve foreign exploration, host specificity testing in the field and in quarantine, as well as development of long-term assessment procedures, and demographic analyses of herbivore impacts.  Managing invasive species using biocontrol for conservation will require buy-in and acceptance by different stakeholders. Therefore, a portion of the work we envision will involve development of quantitative social science experiments to probe attitudes, beliefs, perceptions, and policy preferences. We are looking for a postdoctoral associate to join our team to enhance our capabilities, by developing new experimental approaches and assisting in analyses of existing long-term datasets.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Associate in Chemical Biology

The Chang Lab (http://www.pamchanglab.com) conducts research at the interfaceof chemical biology, microbiology, and immunology. Located in the Department of Microbiology & Immunology at Cornell University in beautiful Ithaca, NY, our research is focused on understanding chemical communication between the gut microbiome and the host immune system. Using both chemical and biological approaches, we develop novel chemical tools to understand 1) the metabolism of the gut microbiome and 2) important pathways within the host immune system by controlling the activities of specific immune cell types.
We seek a highly motivated postdoctoral associate with an outstanding record of independent research in chemical biology to carry out interdisciplinary research projects at the interface of chemical biology, microbiology, and immunology. Projects may include organic synthesis of novel chemical probes, application of these probes to biological systems, and biological study of host-microbe

(45) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Associate, Research Opportunity in Smart and Healthy Communities

The Cornell University Transportation and Environment/Energy Systems (CUTES) research group invites applications from outstanding researchers for a post-doctoral research position in the area of Urban Technology, Digital Twin, and the Sustainability Business–Technology, Infrastructure, and Software Platform for Smart and Healthy Communities. The successful candidate will work as part of the multi-disciplinary team of CUTES research on urban technology, digital twin and software development, infrastructure investment and asset management optimization, and infrastructure finance/policy for smart and healthy communities. The CUTES group is a cross-disciplinary research team that takes innovative systems informatics-analytics approaches to solving urban infrastructure and its associated environment/health/economics and management problems.  The CUTES research group brings together a world-class interdisciplinary team to model the whole-of-life performance of urban technology, transportation/infrastructure, and complexity of the interdependency between the built and natural environments. The research team combines social scientists with researchers in engineering and complex systems simulation: the Group involves faculty and grad/undergrad students from Civil and Environmental Engineering, Statistics, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Applied Economics and Management, and Systems Engineering. The CUTES Research Group has a successful history in the nexus of urban transportation and environment/energy systems research and is involved in several large-scale interdisciplinary projects in economic/environmental impact assessment such as transportation emissions and air pollution/public health in New York City. Our research seeks to combine fundamental theoretical investigations with serious applications including the modeling and development of efficient systems for extracting and processing information. We aim at developing theoretical models, hybrid numerical approaches, computational algorithms, integrated software platforms, and ultimately policy insights and practical guidelines for managing the interactions among urban technologies, infrastructure and environment networks, and consumers and communities.

About Cornell University, New York, United States – Official Website

Cornell University is a private, statutory, Ivy League and land-grant research university in Ithaca, New York. Founded in 1865 by Ezra Cornell and Andrew Dickson White, the university was intended to teach and make contributions in all fields of knowledge—from the classics to the sciences, and from the theoretical to the applied. These ideals, unconventional for the time, are captured in Cornell’s founding principle, a popular 1868 quotation from founder Ezra Cornell: “I would found an institution where any person can find instruction in any study.”

The university is broadly organized into seven undergraduate colleges and seven graduate divisions at its main Ithaca campus, with each college and division defining its specific admission standards and academic programs in near autonomy. The university also administers two satellite medical campuses, one in New York City and one in Education City, Qatar.

Cornell is one of the few private land grant universities in the United States. Of its seven undergraduate colleges, three are state-supported statutory or contract colleges through the State University of New York (SUNY) system, including its agricultural and human ecology colleges as well as its industrial labor relations school. Of Cornell’s graduate schools, only the veterinary college is state-supported. As a land grant college, Cornell operates a cooperative extension outreach program in every county of New York and receives annual funding from the State of New York for certain educational missions. The Cornell University Ithaca Campus comprises 745 acres, but is much larger when the Cornell Botanic Gardens (more than 4,300 acres) and the numerous university-owned lands in New York City are considered
