A postdoctoral position is available in the Cell and Developmental Biology Center (Rosa Puertollano, PI) at the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute. The successful candidate would join a multi-disciplinary and highly interactive team of researchers with diverse backgrounds and expertise in a collaborative scientific environment. We are interested in understanding the mechanisms that regulate traffic of lipids and proteins in the secretory and endocytic pathways, and how defects in sorting lead to human diseases. Current projects include the study of endo/lysosomal TRP channels, the characterization of the role of mTOR and TFEB in lysosomal biogenesis and nutrient sensing, and the elucidation of new approaches for the treatment of lysosomal storage disorders. We use a wide range of cell biology techniques (molecular biology, protein biochemistry, confocal microscopy) as well as in vivo animal models (mouse and zebrafish).

Our laboratory utilizes experimental and computational biology to explore human-associated microbiota (bacteria, fungi, virus) that contribute to health and disease. We have two areas of focus, exploring the skin microbiome and hospital outbreaks of multi-drug resistant organisms. We analyze shotgun metagenomics datasets combined with sequence of cultured isolates obtained from human clinical studies to generate hypotheses about microbial colonization or infection. The Postdoctoral Fellow’s primary responsibilities will be to provide skilled expertise in a wide variety of projects involving making, using, and treating animal models of human disease. Specifically, the Postdoctoral Fellow will evaluate models of AKT1-related Proteus syndrome. More recently, our group has focused on clinical studies of familial platelet disorder with associated myeloid malignancy, a rare genetic disease caused by germline mutations in RUNX1.
