PhD position summary/title: Doctoral student in Power system optimization

The Alternating Current Optimal Power Flow (AC OPF) problem is at the heart of economically efficient and reliable electricity transmission network operation. The AC OPF and its variants are large-scale nonconvex optimization problems which are hard to solve. However, efficient AC OPF calculation could save billions of euros per year and reduce harmful emissions. Today, the major AC OPF computational challenge is to consistently find a global AC OPF solution using fast and robust solution techniques. Accordingly, we will pursue the following five objectives: First, we will explore the recent nonconvex optimization techniques for solving the AC OPF problem. Second, we consider the security and ramping constraints in the AC OPF derivations and see how those nonconvex optimization techniques can be used. Third, the binary decisions involved in network optimization are considered in the AC OPF solution algorithm developments. Fourth, we address limited observability issue for online AC OPF calculation.

PhD position summary/title: PhD in Electroactive Cellulose Composites Towards Future Green Devices

The combination of cellulose, not the least nanocelluloses, and electrically conducting materials such as PEDOT:PSS, carbon nanotubes, and 2D materials (e.g. graphene, and MXene) has attracted considerable interest over the last decade for applications in various devices, for example for energy storage, actuators, and sensors. The nanometre dimensions of the particles in combination with their excellent mechanical properties, allowing for a bottom‐up design of different devices, have been the major driving force for this renewed interest in cellulose materials, allowing for the preparation of conducting films and composites. As an extension of using nanocellulose, recent work has shown that also papermaking-grade cellulose fibres can be modified and used as scaffolds onto which functional materials can self-assemble towards advanced composites. However, the mechanism behind the adsorption is not well understood and needs further investigation.

PhD position summary/title: Doctoral students in LUBFLOW: Liquid-infused surface in flowing fluids

This project is part of LUBFLOW, which is funded by the European Research Council (ERC) and runs from September 1st, 2023 to September 1st, 2028. The primary objective of LUBFLOW is to develop a fundamental understanding of lubricant-infused surfaces in fluid flows, which could have significant implications for various technological applications. We are currently seeking PhD students in fluid mechanics to join the LUBFLOW team. This position provides an exciting opportunity for talented and motivated researchers to work on a cutting-edge research project. A lubricant-infused surface (LIS) is a structured surface infused with a viscous liquid layer. These slippery surfaces are partially inspired by the carnivorous Nepenthes pitcher plant. LISs have shown great promise for reducing fluid friction, preventing biofouling and increasing heat transfer in fluid flows. However, the behaviour of LISs in realistic flow environments is very difficult to predict. LUBFLOW will therefore investigate LISs in fluid flows that include turbulence, surfactants, and bacteria. This could lead to better control of fluid flows and broad technological advancements.

PhD position summary/title: Doctoral student in Computational Fluid Mechanics

Turbulent flow has a major impact in many areas of engineering, not least in terms of frictional resistance to vehicles or the efficiency of turbo machines. In the project, we look at how the flow on turbine blades in turbo machines is affected by incoming turbulence and the presence of shock waves, and assess turbine efficiency. The flow is very complicated and we use large simulations on the most powerful supercomputers as a numerical wind tunnel to investigate how the boundary layer – shock interaction and turbulence affect the flow on the surface of the turbine, and analyze the large data sets produced via modern analysis methods. Among other things, we use modern analysis tools from dynamic system theory and signal processing to understand the complex flow. The results provide a detailed understanding of the flow processes and how they can be modeled, something that has direct application to the design of environmentally friendly aircraft with less fuel consumption and more efficient turbo engines.

PhD position summary/title: Doctoral student in Pointwise Maximal Leakage Privacy Mechanism Design

The overall goal of this project is to develop efficient data disclosure mechanisms with operationally meaningful and provable privacy guarantees. Privacy concerns often hinder data sharing, but having a provable privacy guarantee allows for a thorough privacy risk analysis, as required by GDPR, and thereby enables privacy-preserving data sharing. Pointwise maximal leakage (PML) is a statistical inference measure, whose foundation makes it explainable so that it can be easier incorporated in privacy risk analyses. The definition of PML is also more flexible than differential privacy to incorporate prior domain knowledge, which prevents privacy mechanisms to be overly conservative and thereby unnecessarily diminish utility. Thus, using PML for privacy-risk assessments and privacy-by-designs will simplify legal assessment due to its operational foundation and its flexibility will enhance utility by better adapted privacy mechanisms.

PhD position summary/title: Doctoral student in Biomaterials for carbon anode in aluminum production

Aluminum is one of the world’s most widely used and recycled metals. Commercial primary aluminum manufacture involves reducing alumina to aluminium in a reduction/electrolysis cell. This process is achieved by running electricity between a negative cathode and a positive anode, both made of fossil carbon.  The process is highly energy intensive, requiring 13,500-15,000 kWh per ton of aluminium. For the gas-powdered aluminum smelters of Europe, the corresponding carbon emission intensity is estimated to be 4-10 tons of CO2 per ton of aluminium.  The secure supply of carbon anodes and the associated emissions from carbon anode consumption serve as the remaining major challenge for aluminium production. Europe, especially the Nordic region, is rich in forest resources. Developing biomaterials derived from biomass as alternative sources of anode raw materials is ideal, which can avoid CO2 emissions from anode consumption.

PhD position summary/title: PhD in AI enhanced optimization of power grids with electric vehicles

Driven by the environment concern and sustainable requirement, electric vehicles (EVs) have attracted global attention as they provide more environmentally friendly transportation. However, the large-scale utilization of EVs will greatly increase the electricity consumption in the grid. If charging of EVs are not managed, it will pose significant impact on grid and require expensive grid reinforcement. On the other hand, vehicle to grid (V2G) and smart charging will provide opportunities to minimize grid impact and provide grid support for smooth integration of EVs. Moreover, traffic flow and travel requirements of drivers/customers also have impact on the charging demand. The aim of this project is to achieve optimal and secure operation of future electrical power grids with a high share of EVs considering the impact of traffic flow and drivers’ requirement. This project will hire 1-2 PhD students. Based on students’ expertise, it can be directed to the development of advanced optimization algorithms, or the design/implementation of AI/deep reinforcement learning algorithms to achieve the optimal operation of power grids with EVs, or the hardware development of EV charger (dual active bridge converter) with optimal charging control.

PhD position summary/title: Doctoral student in communication networks and machine learning

Machine learning solutions have matured tremendously lately, but we still do not know how to learn efficiently when data and agents are spread out over large physical areas.  This scenario is not uncommon, think about all the health monitoring devices we wear, or monitoring traffic in a city or crops growing on the fields. Since agents in this case need to be connected through communication networks, like 6G or software defined networks, machine learning and network design need to advance together.

PhD position summary/title: Doctoral student in Power electronics

A fossil-free society requires that important industrial processes and specific transports are provided with hydrogen. Great amounts of hydrogen have to be produced and it has to be made using renewable electricity. This electricity is often produced at great distance from hydrogen consumption centers, which indicates that high-voltage direct current supply is a reasonable solution. As electrolyzers are supplied from a low voltage, a modular technology converting very high direct voltages to comparably low voltages is necessary. No such technology is available today, and the project, therefore, will search for realistic solutions providing high energy efficiency and cost efficiency. As Hitachi Energy is part of the project group, a fortunate project may lead to a product development, and a strengthened Swedish industry on an enormous market.

PhD position summary/title: Doctoral student in Power electronics

The variability of renewable energy sources and the localization, for instance offshore or in remote sites in the society, requires a grid that can handle large power variations over large distances. If our society should exploit as much renewable energy as possible highvoltage direct current (HVDC) grids will be necessary. This grid will have different voltage levels as different parts of the grid will be interconnected at different instants in time. In order to control the power flows between the voltage levels DC-DC converters will be necessary. The solutions that are available today are costly and voluminous. The latter is a big drawback if the equipment is located on an offshore platform. The project aims at generating new knowledge on how to design DC-DC converters for HVDC grids such that the highest possible energy efficiency, compactness, and cost-effectiveness can be achieved.

PhD position summary/title: Doctoral student inHuman-Centered AI for video games

This project addresses the question of how to elicit and incorporate human feedback in the development of autonomous agents, with a specific focus on the design of believable Non-player Characters (NPCs) in video games. While NPCs typically follow pre-scripted actions or dialogue that can affect gameplay, the gaming industry has a large interest in using AI to increase the autonomy and believability of these characters. We aim to make the following contributions:

  1. Develop novel algorithms that can align human feedback with existing models in an efficient manner. This includes (a) extending existing active and preference learning methods for determining which queries to elicit human input to maximize learning, as well as (b) developing novel human-machine interaction modalities to elicit feedback and obtain as much information as possible from each query.
  2. Establishment of appropriate benchmarks for evaluating subjective aspects of the learned behaviors (e.g., believability, congruency with the character type/context, etc.), beyond the typical metrics used in task-oriented learning.
  3. Demonstrate and evaluate our approach with real human feedback in scenarios that can highlight the significance of the developed methods beyond gaming applications.
