Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Research Associate – Advanced Manufacturing of Nuclear Materials

We are seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate who will focus on advanced manufacturing of relevant materials for nuclear fuel.  This position resides in the Advanced Fuel Fabrication and Instrumentation Group in the Nuclear Energy and Fuel Cycle Division, Fusion and Fission Energy and Science Directorate at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).  

The AFFI Group fabricates advanced nuclear materials and composite nuclear fuel forms to support a range of reactor applications. A primary research thrust is understanding how processing variables, composite architecture, and service conditions (e.g., corrosion, temperature, radiation) affect the structure, chemistry, and mechanical properties of these fuels and materials.  As part of the research team, you will investigate powder-based additive manufacturing processes such as laser powder bed fusion, for fabrication of relevant nuclear materials, including Fe- and Ni-based alloys. The candidate will be expected to design a study to document the processing behavior of desired alloys by additive manufacturing, characterize the resulting macro and microstructures, and coordinate applicable performance testing, e.g., mechanical testing, corrosion analysis, etc., with other groups. Several methods are employed, including traditional approaches such as CVD, but also novel, nonequilibrium approaches for bottom-up and top-down growth and doping, such as pulsed laser deposition (PLD) and laser processing within optical microscopy environments or within the TEM, where control over the kinetic energy of precursor species or pulsed photolytic processes are used to synthesize and process nanomaterials with metastable phases or states that are predicted to have novel functionalities.  The novel materials synthesized in this project will be collaboratively shared with a wide variety of microscopists, ultrafast spectroscopists, device experts, and quantum information scientists to explore their functionalities across a wide spectrum of capabilities being developed at ORNL.
