(08) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title:  Research Associate- From peptides to catalysts exploring the emergence of function by ultrahigh throughput screening and mechanistic analysis (Fixed Term)

A postdoctoral position is available for 18 months (in the first instance, extension possible) from the 1st February 2024 (or later) to work with Florian Hollfelder at the Biochemistry Department of Cambridge University (https://hollfelder.bioc.cam.ac.uk/) The emergence of functional proteins from the primordial soup is defining the origin of life. This step is also the most enigmatic transition in the search for efficient biocatalysts and difficult to emulate in model experiments. Our recent work provides a clue how inactive scaffolds can be functionalised (doi.org/10.1101/2023.02.13.528392). We want to use ultrahigh throughput screening in microfluidic droplets to find new catalysts and then analyse their features (e.g. catalytic promiscuity and conformational diversity) that first give rise to ‘evolvability’ and subsequently to efficiency. Deep sequence datasets from droplet screening will be interpreted using machine learning/AI approaches and, together with classical physical-organic/structural/mechanistic approaches, teach us where in sequence space novel solutions for sustainable biocatalysis can be harvested.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Research Associate (Fixed Term)

We are an interdisciplinary research team interested in animal cell size regulation and decision making (https://www.zatulovskiylab.org). While different cell types in our body differ in size by many orders of magnitude, cells of a given type are incredibly uniform in size, suggesting that cell size is tightly controlled and crucial for tissue function. Consistent with this, significant cell size alterations are often associated with diseases and ageing. Nevertheless, surprisingly little is known about how size affects specific aspects of cell physiology, and we are only beginning to understand what molecular mechanisms regulate animal cell size. In the Zatulovskiy lab, we apply a systems biology approach and a diverse set of state-of-the-art quantitative techniques (including live-cell fluorescence microscopy, flow cytometry, SILAC proteomics, CRISPR/Cas9-mediated gene editing, and mathematical modeling) to solve a century-old puzzle of how animal cells regulate their size and how changes in cell size affect cell behaviours and fate decisions in health and disease.

The BioNano Engineering group, headed by Dr. Ljiljana Fruk (fruk-group.com), is looking for an outstanding postdoctoral research associate for a project focused on development of nanobiosensor for detection of senescent cells present in lung cancer post chemotherapy. The project is funded by CRUK Early Detection of Cancer Primer Award and the suitable candidate should start the position as soon as possible, preferably in January 2024 Senescent cell state is a consequence of irreparable damage and characterised by arrested growth, changed morphology and secretion of biochemical packages of information into the surrounding environment. Their level increases as we age, but they are also present in tissues that has been exposed to high level of stress, for example after chemo- and radiotherapy. Detection followed by elimination of senescent cells has beneficial effects on life and health span, and could also help assessing the early development of cancer as well as designing more tailored therapeutic interventions. We have been working on detection of senescent cells and have developed organic nanoprobe that can be used for in vivo detection. We are now looking to extend this detection to urine-based tests, and render it more suitable for the point-of-care application.

A position is available at the University of Cambridge in the Computational Modelling Group under the supervision of Prof. Markus Kraft. The project aims to develop a comprehensive virtual model of the built environment. In collaboration with the MRC Epidemiology Unit, the model will be used in conjunction with existing data to support the epidemiological analysis of environmental factors influencing behaviour and health. The project will leverage the knowledge-based technology ¿ known as The World Avatar (TWA) ¿ pioneered by Prof. Kraft to enable the holistic epidemiological assessment of environmental exposures, leveraging the increasingly digitalised description of the environment alongside time-stamped data describing the behaviour of people. The vision is to move beyond the fixed characterisation of the environment and an individual’s inter-relationship with it, and beyond the reductionist approach of studying one element of the environment and its relationship with a particular disease. Rather, the envisaged approach would enable a comprehensive evaluation of how changes in the environment could impact health through both direct and indirect pathways, supporting the translation of potential interventions into sustainable public health solutions.

About The University of Cambridge, United Kingdom – Official Website

The University of Cambridge is a collegiate research university in Cambridge, United Kingdom. Founded in 1209 and granted a royal charter by Henry III in 1231, Cambridge is the second-oldest university in the English-speaking world and the world’s fourth-oldest surviving university. The university grew out of an association of scholars who left the University of Oxford after a dispute with the townspeople. The two English ancient universities share many common features and are often jointly referred to as Oxbridge.

Cambridge is formed from a variety of institutions which include 31 semi-autonomous constituent colleges and over 150 academic departments, faculties and other institutions organised into six schools. All the colleges are self-governing institutions within the university, each controlling its own membership and with its own internal structure and activities. All students are members of a college. Cambridge does not have a main campus, and its colleges and central facilities are scattered throughout the city. Undergraduate teaching at Cambridge is organised around weekly small-group supervisions in the colleges – a feature unique to the Oxbridge system. These are complemented by classes, lectures, seminars, laboratory work and occasionally further supervisions provided by the central university faculties and departments. Postgraduate teaching is provided predominantly centrally.

Cambridge University Press, a department of the university, is the oldest university press in the world and currently the second largest university press in the world. Cambridge Assessment, also a department of the university, is one of the world’s leading examining bodies and provides assessment to over eight million learners globally every year. The university also operates eight cultural and scientific museums, including the Fitzwilliam Museum, as well as a botanic garden.
