PhD position summary/title: PhD scholarship in Prescriptive Analytics for District Heating Networks at DTU Engineering Technology
The fault management and maintenance/renovation practices in district heating networks are currently limited to reactive or preventive approaches. These inefficient practices pose significant challenges to the performance of modern district heating systems. Furthermore, the aging infrastructure of many district heating systems necessitates constant renovation. However, the existing approach to renovation planning is suboptimal and lacks a proactive strategy. Addressing these challenges is crucial for improving the performance and reliability of district heating systems. We have an opening at DTU Engineering Technology for a PhD-student on developing Prescriptive Analytics tool for District Heating Networks addressing these challenges.

PhD position summary/title: PhD position on mathematical modelling of granulation processes for the manufacturing of biochemical products – DTU Chemical Engineering
This PhD project will be based at the Process and Systems Engineering Center (PROSYS) at DTU Chemical Engineering, in close collaboration with the Solid Product Development & Innovation Pilot Plant at Novozymes. The focus of the project is the modelling of granulation processes, specifically multi-step spray drying and fluid bed granulation. The project is in line with the general trend towards digitalization of pilot and full-scale processes and the application of models in all phases of new product development. The aim of the project is to develop mathematical models that are implemented in DigitalTwin tools to assist all phases of solid product development, from early feasibility assessment where only minor amounts of new active ingredients may be available to the final production stage where the models may be used for Model Predictive Control. A hybrid modelling approach will most likely be required, combining first principles models in the initial phases and data-based models closer to the final production stage.

PhD position summary/title: PhD scholarship in Computer Vision with Deep Learning for Human-Machine Collaboration – DTU Compute
Learning visual recognition models requires huge amounts of data, especially when relying on data-hungry deep neural networks. These data need to be manually and passively annotated by humans. This labeling procedure is one of the most important steps in a machine learning pipeline and is tedious, expensive, and susceptible to noise leading to erroneous labels. We aim to establish a deeper human-machine collaboration for all stages of the learning pipeline via multimodal labeling and learning. The goal of this project is to leverage information from different modalities that naturally occur near web images to assist the image annotation. You will develop state-of-the-art multimodal models for self-supervision with human-in-the-loop text supervision. This PhD project will be supervised by Associate Professor (DTU).

PhD position summary/title: PhD position in Frequency Modulated Optical Phased Array for Fast CO2 Sensing – DTU Electro
Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) is a 1-3D sensing technology that can be used for remote sensing of e.g. distance, velocity or chemical composition of a gas or solid. Typically, LiDAR designs comprise a multitude of moving parts (e.g., an assembly of lasers, optics, electronics, and detectors) on a mechanically rotating stage. The need to assemble and align all these parts leads to high costs and relatively low manufacturing volumes, while the wear and tear on the mechanical components limits long-term reliability. To solve these problems, the trend is to go for higher levels of integration enabled by semiconductor technologies and move away from discrete and mechanical components. Hereby, also fast spatial scanning of the laser beam is enabled as detailed below. DTU Electro at the Technical University of Denmark is seeking a candidate for a PhD position to research a fast 2D beam steering LiDAR based on integrated 1D optical phased array (OPA), implemented for environmental CO2 gas sensing. The PhD student will participate in an international team in an EU-funded Doctoral Network project called NiteLiDAR. The project consists of 10 Ph.D. students at 3 universities, an international R&D organization, and a company. The project has partners from four different EU countries. All 10 Ph.d. projects are within the overall theme of photonic and electronic integrated circuits for next-generation LiDAR technologies.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Scholarship in Experimental Quantum Photonics Reservoir Computing – DTU Electro
The Machine Learning in Photonic Systems group at DTU Electro seeks one candidates for PhD projects on quantum photonics reservoir computing. The 3-year PhD position is funded by Danish Research Council project `Quantum Photonic Reservoir Computing’ (QUARCOM). This PhD project is a collaboration between the Technical University of Denmark and Aarhus University that aims at developing a new neuromorphic computing platform with high-efficiency and low energy consumption by combining recent advances in silicon photonics chips and the quantum nature of light to realize the first quantum photonic reservoir computing platform. Data is becoming the key resource of the 21st century and this is putting an enormous strain on computational capacity around the world. A slow-down in improving the efficiency of digital computers is now showing up as an alarming increase in energy consumption. This is particularly visible in machine learning and artificial intelligence (AI) applications that require massive parallelism. Not only may this limit access to computing power in developing parts of the world, it is also a glooming challenge due to the environmental impact of the big-data revolution. QUARCOM’s goal is to face such challenge by combining theory and experimental expertise to push the frontier of computing platforms and quantum technologies.

We will achieve this by tailoring plant protein ingredients with superior functional, palatable, and nutritional properties through novel protein design and in-depth understanding of molecular interactions in the food matrix. We will use rapeseed protein to obtain new insights underpinning the scientific foundation to promote the use of seed storage proteins for foods. Rapeseed is a protein-rich crop used for industrial oil production. It is farmed on a large scale in Europe and may be utilized in new food types locally across the globe. In SEEDFOOD we will create knowledge to sustainably transform poor functionality of plant seed storage proteins and rationally tailor protein performance for future food design. Scientific themes in SEEDFOOD encompass: gentle and sustainable processing to isolate seed storage proteins; improvement of protein surface characteristics through enzyme and UV-light treatments; computational, structural and biophysical analysis of rapeseed proteins and molecular interactions, as well as functionality and palatability in model foods.
