PhD position summary/title: PHD POSITION IN THEORETICAL CHEMISTRY
This project will focus on understanding the physical mechanisms governing chemical phenomena that take place on the interface of surfaces by using quantum chemical techniques. Theoretical studies devoted to surface chemistry are rapidly growing in the past decades due to the enormous advancement of computer technology. Nevertheless, the models used to study these chemical processes are, up to now, underdeveloped, hampering the ability to obtain the causality behind the observed chemical phenomena. This project aims to develop state-of-the-art models, rooted in Kohn-Sham density functional theory, to study chemical processes that take place at the interface of surfaces. These models will, in turn, be used to study a wide variety of chemistries occurring on surfaces, ranging from self-assembly of supramolecular polymers to heterogeneous catalysis.

(03) PhD Degree – Fully Funded
PhD position summary/title: PHD POSITION: MECHANISMS OF SENSORY PERCEPTION IN CORTEX
The sensory areas of the cerebral cortex process sensory information from the external world and distribute this information throughout the brain to orchestrate appropriate behavioral output. How activity of projection neurons that target other cortical and subcortical areas generate behavioral output is poorly understood. By combining electrophysiological recordings with genetic targeting of specific cell types, we study how internally generated information streams (such as motion and motivation) modulate sensory responses in the cortex and in downstream areas of rodents during sensorimotor behaviors. Detailed understanding of cell type-specific function will inspire anatomically and functionally realistic models of the brain to improve our understanding of how sensory information from the world is transformed into perception, and ultimately into behavior.

PhD position summary/title: PHD POSITION: ECONOMIC ANALYSIS OF HEALTH RISKS OF ENDOCRYNE DISRUPTING CHEMICALS
You will study the economic costs and benefits of national and EU-wide policy and regulation pathways to reduce the risks of endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs), including ‘forever chemicals’ like pfas. The economic analysis will be based on data collection using surveys, interviews and choice experiments to measure public awareness, experience, perceptions, attitudes, and sense of urgency related to the risks of EDCs. Choice experiments will be used to (i) assess public willingness to change lifestyles or behavioural patterns leading to adverse health outcomes and (ii) test different risk communication strategies on risk behaviour targeting different socioeconomic and sociocultural risk profiles. The latter aims to assess social inequalities for future policy and regulation development.
You will work in a new Horizon Europe project that starts in 2024, and investigates EDCs as contributors to progression of metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease. This disease is increasing rapidly worldwide, affecting up to a third of the global population, in parallel with rising rates of diabetes and obesity. The project brings together scientists and practitioners from 9 different European countries. VU Amsterdam’s Institute for Environmental Studies (IVM) leads the work package on socio-economic and behavioural approaches, and is responsible for assessing public support to eliminate EDCs from European markets in line with relevant EU legislation. The project builds on capacity in this specific field in the Institute for Environmental Studies’ Environmental Economics department, and includes close collaboration with the Economics department at the University of Waterloo, Canada.

PhD position summary/title: PHD-STUDENT IN CELLULAR NEUROSCIENCE
BRAINMODEL is a multidisciplinary consortium, with partners in Nijmegen, Twente and Rotterdam, in which clinicians, neuroscientists, nanoscientists and patient organizations collaborate to develop new methods to identify biological causes for mNDDs with the aim to develop personalized medicine (www.brainmodel.nl).
In this particular project, we will use fluorescence imaging and patch-clamp electrophysiology to study synaptic transmission and neuronal function in networks from inducible pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) derived neurons (in vitro) with mNDD causing mutations. You will specifically investigate cellular and synaptic parameters that affect the balance between excitation and inhibition (E/I) in these networks. One of the leading hypotheses is that E/I balance is disturbed in neurodevelopmental disorders, leading to altered information processing in the brain. Together we will test if and how cellular and synaptic parameters are changed in excitatory/inhibitory networks of these neurons.

PhD position summary/title: PHD STUDENT: RE-WILDING FORESTS IN EUROPE
The biodiversity crisis requests novel strategies to transform the way we interact with nature. Re-wilding of previously intensive managed land is one of these. Often a focus is put on the development of new nature on former agricultural lands. This project will, in contrast, focus on the potential of re-wilding managed forest areas. The benefits and tradeoffs of such re-wilding of forest areas across many physical and socio-economic dimensions is likely to vary across Europe. The purpose of this PhD project is to assess possible pathways towards re-wilding forest land use in Europe and designing strategies to navigate the associated tradeoffs by spatial planning and targeting of interventions.
Research in this project is 1) to identify likely locations for re-wilding based on scenarios using exploratory land use change models, 2) assess the tradeoffs of alternative forest change trajectories on physical and socio-economic dimensions, 3) optimize target locations for re-wilding and 4) assess the role of a very uncertain future in terms of climate and social changes on these re-wilding pathways.
You will be part of the European project ‘Wildcard’ which bring together European partners in assessing the potential of re-wilding European landscapes. This project is aimed to provide actionable knowledge for EU policy making. You will deploy quantitative and spatial tools, but will additionally work with project partners in a highly collaborative and interdisciplinary way.

PhD position summary/title: PHD CANDIDATE – CHARACTERIZING COGNITIVE SYMPTOMATOLOGY AND CONTRIBUTING FACTORS IN OLDER ADULTS WITH BRAIN TUMORS
This collaborative project aims to bridge the existing knowledge gap and pave the way for improved treatment decision-making and better outcomes for older adults with brain tumors. Together with the PhD candidate, we aim to characterize cognitive symptomatology in older brain tumor patients by I) creating subjective and objective cognition symptom networks in various diagnoses; II) linking age-related pathophysiological changes to cognitive outcomes, and III) explore patterns in everyday cognition with Ecological Momentary Assessment.
