108 Postdoctoral Fellowship at National University of Singapore (NUS), Singapore

The Centre for Quantum Technologies (CQT) at the National University of Singapore (NUS), and French-Singaporean international laboratory (Majulab), are looking for a talented postdoctoral or PhD candidate in experimental physics, for exploring the fundamental and technological quantum resources of systems that are constructed around a high-Kerr photonic resonators – i.e. a resonator in which the nonlinearity strength acts at the scale of one or a few photons. Two research axes are currently in development: (i) New physics and resources emerging in the quantum regime of photonic bistability, and (ii) new paradigm for the measurement of quantum scale forces (i.e. at the scale of single photons recoil) in hybrid Strong-Kerr optomechanical architectures.

More specifically, the goals are:

• Characterise the quantum properties of a strong-Kerr microresonator in the bistable regime using classical and quantum light: e.g.: demonstration of a Dynamical Casimir effect in the jump dynamics, demonstration of a giant single-shot ultra-fast amplification of single or few photons.
• Participate in the development of a new type of hybrid Strong-Kerr optomechanical architecture by optical characterization and feedback (Collaboration for the fabrication:  C2N CNRS, Paris-Saclay). Demonstrate the polaritonic-enhancement and the Kerr-enhancement of the optomechanical interactions in the system using externally applied classical and quantum-prepared radiation pressure.

The candidate will conduct experimental research in the area of thin film growth and characterization, memory device fabrication and characterization. 

 

The research efforts of current position will be focused on Spin torque ferroelectric resonance measurement, electric transport characterization, and device fabrication.

• Identify data required, and develop data systems to:
  • Estimate future emissions from international shipping under different scenarios
  • Monitor the ongoing emission reduction measures/policies in international shipping
  • Develop simulation model for impact assessment
  • Analyse the potential impacts from various combinations of emission reduction measures, adoption of zero-carbon fuels, and/or emission reduction regulations
• Contribute to research publications and funding proposals
• Assist with the administration and management of research project, including preparation of presentations and other tasks assigned by the PI.

The primary objectives of these two positions are to foster a profound design principle towards novel, cost-effective electrocatalysts and reactors for the efficient conversion of CO2/CO into liquid fuels. Furthermore, these roles will involve exploring the potential for synergizing biochemistry and electrochemistry, with the overarching goal of enhancing selectivity and efficiency in the conversion of CO2 into multi-carbon products. Extensive state-of-the-art infrastructures for materials synthesis and physical characterizations are established at the Department. 

The research fellows are required to help in guiding young students, visiting scholars, and assisting the establishment of larger research applications and facilitating initiatives with respect to sharing and developing infrastructure for electrocatalysis research within NUS.

The successful candidate will lead experimental efforts to investigate the combustion behavior, emissions, and performance of ammonia-based fuels in gas turbine combustion systems. This is a highly collaborative project involving three PIs at MBI as well as the group of Alexander Ludwig at the School of Biological Sciences (SBS), NTU Singapore. The aim of this project is to understand the molecular and cellular mechanisms that sense and transmit mechanical forces from the apical surface of epithelial cells to the Hippo/YAP signalling pathway. A combination of in vitro force measurements, biochemical approaches, cell-based assays and live cell fluorescence imaging of mechanically perturbed cell monolayers will be used to tackle this question. Explore the coupling mechanism between photonics and excitons: Understand in depth the exciton-polaritons in topological photonic crystals dressed with low dimensional materials. Explore the coupling mechanism between photonic states in topological photonic crystals with exciton states in low-dimensional materials to reveal the regulation phenomena of exciton-polaritons, such as backscattering-immune transmission and robust localization of exciton-polaritons. 

 

Develop tunable topological optical transmission devices: Investigate properties such as magneto-optical effects and electro-optical effects in low-dimensional materials to control the optical transmission phenomena in topological photonic crystals. Research methods will include but not be limited to the use of external magnetic fields, electric fields, or optical excitation to dynamically control topological edge states, thereby achieving efficient, tunable on-chip topological photonic devices.

We will adopt a novel dual strategy approach, using surface morphology to control fluid-surface interactions to reduce flow stresses, and concurrently using selecting grafting of anti-thrombotic biochemicals, to achieve our goals. Subsequently, we will perform a preclinical in vivo study to evaluate the drag reduction and anti-thrombotic potential of the material.

The Centre for Remote Imaging, Sensing and Processing (CRISP), in collaboration with NUS Environmental Research Institute (NERI) and Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) seeks to further evaluate, enhance and incorporate advanced atmospheric chemical transport models (WRF-Chem), suited to the tropical environment. Our vision is to further enhance our knowledge of the role of VOC’s and other major precursors and associated emissions sources and origins (domestic vs. cross-border contribution) forming and affecting concentrations of secondary inorganic aerosols (SIAs), secondary organic aerosols (SOAs) and ozone (O3) in Singapore. Modifications and additions to existing chemical mechanisms build-in into the WRF-Chem modelling system is foreseen as the principal task in this work. Updating local and regional anthropogenic and regional fire emission datasets as well and its application to the modelling of transport and evolution of aerosols and other chemical species across the South-East Asia region are part of the project goals. Advanced HPC computing resources are available at CRISP, NUS and the National Super-computing Centre.

The Mechanobiology Institute (MBI), National University of Singapore is seeking to recruit a Research Fellow (RF) to join Dr. Gianluca Grenci’s group, in the framework of a collaborative project with partners from A-STAR and IMRE. The project aims at studying the lipids content in tissue samples and live cells and their correlation with different conditions: “young” and “aged” tissues and different dietary regimes. To this task, we are developing a methodology based on two original elements: we make use of a quantum IR microscope of our own design instead of a standard FTIR IR microscope and we are developing a new kind of microfluidic devices compatible with Vis/IR/UV microscopy for maintaining the live the samples during observation. For more details on these two key aspects and their working principles please refer to [1, 2].

The newly hired RF will be in charge of preparing the biological samples, conducting the characterization and chemical mapping with the quantum IR microscope and analyze the results with the scope of identify markers of different conditions and their possible correlations with pathological outcomes. Since microfluidic devices will be part of the experimental set-up to optimize, familiarity with this technology will be considered as a plus. MBI provides state-of-the-art core facilities both for biological samples preparation and for micro/nano fabrication for biological applications.
