The research project you will be working on aims to analyze the role of hydrogen in Sweden’s energy system, with a focus on both historical and contemporary conditions. The goal is to increase knowledge about the technical and societal conditions, risks, and opportunities of hydrogen. You will collaborate closely with a doctoral student with a social science background at Chalmers. Drawing from your previous educational backgrounds, you will work together to highlight various aspects of the role and integration of hydrogen, with support and expertise provided by your doctoral supervisors and research colleagues. Additionally, you will collaborate and have the opportunity to build your own network within the framework of the Graduate School in Energy Systems’ courses and meetings (e.g. doctoral meetings).
The research aims to provide decision-making support for companies, municipalities, and the national parliament, with an emphasis on collaboration with external stakeholders such as industry organizations and companies. The project offers interesting cases and contexts to study, with potential examples including hydrogen in agriculture, the transport sector, the energy sector, and industry. As a doctoral student, you will have the opportunity, with the support of your supervisors, to design your dissertation work within the framework of the project’s research agenda.
The doctoral position is funded by the Swedish Energy Agency through the Graduate School in Energy Systems program. As part of the position, you will participate in the activities of the Graduate School in Energy Systems, where you will also complete a joint course package of approximately 30 credits (read more at foes.se).
As a PhD student, you devote most of your time to doctoral studies and the research projects of which you are part. Your work may also include teaching or other departmental duties, up to a maximum of 20% of full-time.

PhD position summary/title: PhD student in Technology and Social Change
The successful candidate is expected to work in the research project ‘Biomedicine, Clinical Knowledge, and the Humanities in Collaboration: A Novel Epistemology for Radically Interdisciplinary Health Research and Policy-Work on Post-Covid-19 Syndrome’, and specifically in the subproject ‘A Novel Model for Policy-Work’.
The aims of this subproject are to examine what is assessed as relevant knowledge for health care recommendations and policies, regionally, nationally, and internationally; how this assessment is done, and which epistemic presuppositions the assessment rests on. Another aim is to create a model for knowledge assessment that makes it possible to include research results from within randomized clinical trials as well as hermeneutically oriented qualitative research and other studies in medical humanities. PostCovid is used as an example. Medical sociology, science and technology studies, phenomenological philosophy and analytic philosophy perspectives are combined within analyses in this subproject.
The PhD project is part of the subproject ‘A Novel Model for Policy-Work’. Within it, the PhD candidate is expected to analyze assessment methods that are used in the development of health care recommendations and policies (such as GRADE or other models for assessment of research), with a focus on how epistemic assumptions and choices of models for assessment help constitute what get to be perceived and understood as relevant knowledge for health care recommendations. This could, for example, be done from a phenomenological perspective that examines the epistemic presuppositions underlying the constitution of criteria in healthcare recommendations. Again, postCovid-19 syndrome is used as the example.
