FLOW aims to uncover the molecular principles of how the cellular protein quality-control network modulates the fate of proteins from cradle to grave. Molecular chaperones and the degradation machinery determine the fate of proteins, and failure to do so leads to diseases as divergent as neurodegeneration or cystic fibrosis. The FLOW consortium, a unique and highly interdisciplinary team, aims to discover, rebuild and control the triaging of protein fate. We do this by combining biochemical, biophysical, cell biological, computational, and genetic methods, from single molecule to cell.

PhD position summary/title: Three PhD positions for the ERC project, ‘Making Sense of Communities of Arms’
ARMIES is a five-year project supported by a European Research Council (ERC) Starting Grant. The project aims to establish a new research agenda that centralises the firearm as a sensational actant that shapes everyday practices and relations, creates divergent communities, and (re)produces power structures within local and global spheres. The project centres around an ethnographic analysis of the everyday deployment of firearms and their societal impact. It examines and compares the various ways firearms produce communities and focuses on groups that are overlooked in the field of gun studies, such as gun owners’ associations and hunting clubs. ARMIES hypothesises that these communities are disruptive and transformative ones that exert tremendous power.
The project members are guided by the following research question: ‘How do firearms produce communities, how do these communities relate to one another, and what is their societal impact?’ This question will be answered through a comparative and multiscalar analysis of such communities and their members in Brazil, Germany, and South Africa, and global communities, such as international disarmament organisations. Due to the highly embodied, sensational, and affective nature of firearms, ARMIES will use and develop a multisensorial ethnographic approach (and toolkit) that comprises ethnographic methods that explicitly target the senses.
We seek three PhD candidates who have the necessary research experience and language skills to conduct one of the subprojects in Brazil, South Africa and Germany.

PhD position summary/title: PhD on high expectations, performance pressure, and mental health in childhood
In this PhD position, you are responsible for conducting research within the project ‘High Expectations of Parents, Teachers, and Peers: Driver of Educational Success or Unhealthy Source of Performance Pressure among Children in Upper Primary School?’ The project focuses on parental, teacher and peer expectations as possible sources of performance pressure at school. We examine when high expectations promote children’s school adjustment and when expectations become (too) demanding and create unhealthy levels of performance pressure and mental health problems.
We focus on the last two years of primary school, a period when test results can have a major impact on children’s future, as the tests (largely) determine which track recommendation a child will receive for secondary education. The project has a quantitative longitudinal design following children for two school years (grades 5 and 6), during which two survey measurements are conducted. Furthermore, intensive longitudinal data are collected several times using short daily questionnaires. In the daily measurements, we measure how parents, teachers and peers communicate about their expectations and the importance they attach to high performance during periods when children take important tests and when they receive their school advice. The project will yield knowledge on how teachers and parents can encourage children to realize their full potential without overburdening them.

PhD position summary/title: PhD: Agent-based modelling for reconstructing the history of culture & language
The project is a geoinformation and data science challenge and at the same time uses domain-specific knowledge from linguistics. In this project, you will:
- analyse data on biophysical and demographic variables across South America since 20,000 years ago;
- develop a spatial agent-based simulation model of language evolution;
- use this model to quantify the relative role of biophysical and sociocultural factors in shaping language diversity in South America.
You will work in a multi-disciplinary team consisting of modellers, data scientists, research software engineers, linguists, and geographers from the Faculty of Geosciences, Utrecht University. You will closely cooperate with a PhD candidate in linguistics at Leiden University. Both of you will work on the same case studies in South America.
To support academic and personal development, PhD candidates follow courses and assist in teaching at Bachelor’s and Master’s level. Together these activities amount to twenty percent of the contracted time.
Language is a unique proxy for culture. A language family arises as a result of the diversification over time of the speech variants of groups that once spoke one and the same language but followed differential historical trajectories. These socio-historical processes took place all over the world, but they have led to radically different patterns of linguistic diversity from one area to another. This fully-funded NWO Open Competition L project is a collaboration between Utrecht University faculty of Geosciences and Leiden Centre for Linguistics to understand the interplay between the biophysical environment and the social processes of diversification to explain the patterns of linguistic diversity we see today

PhD position summary/title: PhD Position: Optimisation of Technologies for Electrifying Chemical Processes
This PhD position is part of a large research project ‘Sunsolr: Electrification of chemical conversions’ which is funded by the Long Term Program Process Technology (LTP) set up with Industry, the Dutch funding body TKI E&I, and academia. The LTP programme is coordinated by the Institute for Sustainable Process Technology (ISPT) and aims at contributing to the development of the process industry of the future. Accordingly, you will be embedded in an interdisciplinary team with four additional PhD candidates from partner universities (TU/e, TU Delft, University of Groningen, and Twente University) and with strong interaction and support from leading energy and chemical companies.
Societal relevance: The transition to a CO2 net-zero society requires a major rethinking of the energy system, with coordinated, timely deployment of several technologies. Among the different sectors that need to become CO2 neutral, the chemical industry will be confronted with a daunting, yet existential challenge: to produce large amounts of carbon-based platform molecules starting from renewable energy and non-fossil material feedstocks. Given the scale of production and associated CO2 emissions, the large capital investments of plants, and the limited time available for the transition, the defossilisation of the chemical industry is a cornerstone for a net-zero society. In this pursue, two elements are particularly important. On the one hand, the electrification of the chemical industry, which is expected to play a major role in enabling the transition from a fossil-based to a renewable-based primary energy input. On the other hand, the availability of CO2-free carbon: the chemical industry must source carbon from non-fossil feedstocks, e.g. using direct air capture, where CO2 is captured directly from air. Sunsolr aims to initiate and develop novel technologies for the direct electrification (i) of chemical conversions via electrocatalysis of pre-captured CO2, and ii) of integrated CO2 capture and conversion.

Building on your qualitative insights, you will apply quantitative methods to assess stakeholder perceptions on a broader scale.
Furthermore, you will co-lead a participatory process that brings together diverse stakeholders to envision modifications to current governance arrangements, aiming to foster more mutually beneficial human-wildlife interactions and stakeholder collaboration. As PhD candidate in this project, you will conduct independent, high-quality research resulting in a doctoral dissertation. Your research will focus on designing a Visual Analytics solution to analyse data from rehabilitating patients with hemianopsia (partial blindness). With the support of explainable AI models, you will develop Visual Analytics dashboards for exploring complex data recorded from the training patients including eye tracking, task progress, and success rates. Over the past two decades, Big Tech companies have steadily increased their influence over public education. This influence has become particularly evident with the rise of platforms and artificial intelligence (AI). Big Tech conglomerates are restructuring the education sector by incorporating new generative AI (GenAI) infrastructures and applications into their own educational services, while simultaneously integrating them with third-party edtech vendors.
As AI-driven tools and platforms become structurally embedded into schools’ digital environments and practices, the existing infrastructures of public education are increasingly pulled into the globalized ecosystems of Big Tech. In this project you will critically investigate the structural convergence of Public Education, Big Tech and AI in the Netherlands, and study the implications of this process for reshaping public education.
During the first six months of the project, you will work on a detailed research plan based on an extended version of the ‘Project Description’ above, which you will carry out independently during the remainder of the project. We are looking for a PhD and a postdoctoral researcher to work within the multi-partner HAICu NWA-ORC project. This vacancy is for the PhD position, the Postdoc position is being advertised simultaneously: Postdoc Position on Multimedia Analysis in the HAICu Project.
