PhD position summary/title: PhD Position – Negative emissions through cost-optimal Direct Air Capture and Storage plant design

One essential step towards the ramp-up is the identification of site-specific optimal design of DACS plants, which will be the focus of the advertised PhD. To identify optimal DACS plant designs in terms of their techno-economic characteristics an optimization model is to be developed in the institutes’ inhouse modelling framework FINE (https://github.com/FZJ-IEK3-VSA/FINE) in addition to technical models allowing to assess technical scaling and an optimal operation. The optimal plant design is identified by considering the energy supply system, the choice of capture technology, the DAC-plant’s technical design, the DAC-plant’s operational concept and the positioning of the DAC-plant with regards to the storage site and needed transportation effort.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Position – Hyperpolarized Magnetic Resonance

If you are interested in creative problem solving at the interface between chemistry and physics, with the chance to mix hands-on experimental work with theory+simulations, this opportunity may be for you!

The Hyperpolarization Methods research group, led by Dr. James Eills at the Institute for Structural Biochemistry, is seeking a motivated PhD candidate to carry out research in the field of hyperpolarized magnetic resonance. Hyperpolarization is the preparation of molecules in a specific nuclear spin quantum state. This means the molecule’s NMR/MRI signals are enhanced by many orders of magnitude, which is transformative for applications such as medical MRI or chemosensing. Specifically, we develop novel chemical and physical methods to produce hyperpolarized molecules, and to extend the lifetimes of those hyperpolarized states.

As a member of the research group, you will work in an environment that combines the best aspects of modern scientific research with traditional academic values. You will carry out fast-paced research on societally-relevant topics, with individual support (especially for your personal well-being) so you can grow as an individual. At the same time, you will have ample opportunity for acquiring knowledge, discussing science, and thinking creatively.

PhD position summary/title: PhD position – Global source apportionment of particulate matter air pollution

The latest report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) emphasizes the importance of finding ways to remove CO2 from the atmosphere to meet climate change targets. One strongly considered solution is Direct Air Capture and Storage (DACS), which involves capturing CO2 from the air and storing it underground in geological formations. However, the operation of DAC facilities could release significant amounts of pollutants, forming toxic gases and atmospheric aerosols. Atmospheric aerosols affect human health and play an important role in changing the Earth’s climate. Therefore, atmospheric chemical modelling can provide valuable insights into the potential risks associated with the use of proposed DAC technology.

  • measure the static interaction potentials between formulation constituents with solid surfaces using total internal reflection microscopy
  • analyze and interpret your experimental results and publish them in international peer reviewed journals and on conferences

The outcome of your work will be combined with the results of your peers in the doctoral network to improve the performance of bio-pesticide formulations.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Position – Cryogenic Integrated CMOS Circuit Design and Electronics for Scalable Quantum Computing

We are working on scalable cryogenic electronics and integrated circuits (ICs) for quantum bits (qubits) to turn the vision of a universal quantum computer into reality. Scaling up to millions of qubits necessitates moving parts of the control electronics closer to the qubits. To achieve this, we design and implement cryogenic ICs for qubit control and readout in state-of-the-art CMOS technologies. Since qubits are extremely sensitive and operate in temperatures as low as a few hundred millikelvins, the requirements on power consumption, noise, and area are extremely challenging. This demands the development of new and groundbreaking architectures and circuit topologies. Our designed ICs and electronics are thoroughly measured and verified by co-integration in direct proximity with qubits.

PhD position summary/title: PhD position – Theory and Modelling of Electrical Double Layer at Supported Nanoparticles

A defossilized global energy ecosystem hinges on efficient conversion between renewable electrical energy and chemical energy stored in molecules. This conversion requires precious catalysts to drive relevant reactions at practical rates. Many catalysts are employed in the form of nanoparticles (NP) dispersed on support materials. All relevant reactions occur in a nanoscale region at the interface between the solid catalyst and an electrolyte solution, i.e., an electric double layer (EDL).

Our current knowledge of EDL is essentially limited to planar electrodes with a single EDL, whereas supported NP catalysts (SNPC) exhibit radically different EDL characteristics, featuring overlap of individual EDLs around the NPs and the adjacent support material. This knowledge gap, concerning crucial local reaction conditions within the EDL, prevents effectively transferring knowledge obtained at planar electrodes to performance improvements of SNPC.

Your PhD project aims at understanding the mesoscopic (1~100 nm) overlapping EDLs in SNPC. Specifically, you will address the fundamental question: how are the overlapping EDLs formed under realistic conditions? This will be studied using an in-house theoretical approach for mesoscale EDLs with both quantum mechanical electrons and classical electrolyte particles treated on equal footing.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Position – Numerical simulation of bijel formation, stability and rheology

This computational doctoral project focuses on a theoretical understanding of emulsions stabilized by colloidal particles. Mesoscale simulation methods combining a lattice Boltzmann solver for the involved fluids and a Discrete Element solver for the suspended colloidal particles shall be developed and applied on state-of-the-art supercomputers. These simulations will be combined with systematic coarse-graining in order to resolve the dynamics and stability of bijels on all relevant timescales. We aim to understand how these emulsions form and which physical effects influence their stability and rheology. With the overall goal of using particle-stabilized emulsions as biopesticides, the candidate shall perform simulations of nutrient transport and the growth of bacteria in numerically optimized emulsion systems. The outcome of your work will be combined with the results of your peers in the doctoral network to improve the performance of bio-pesticide formulations.

PhD position summary/title: PhD position – Environmental fate of BIO2PIM in agro-ecosystems

In both conventional and biodynamic agriculture, there is immense pest stress on cultivated plants which can be counteracted with biopesticides to secure crop yields. Even with optimal field application of biopesticides, soil and weeds are hit in addition to the target crops, directly or indirectly by wash-off/drift, similarly as happens with chemical pesticides. Furthermore, residues from the biopesticide-treated crops can be mixed into the soil. In addition to the active ingredients or active organisms, the fate of the formulation adjuvants or carriers must also be harmless after a period of action i.e. they should not have any negative impact on the environment.

PhD position summary/title: PhD-Position – Planning, Simulation and Optimization of local energy communities

The concept of organizing energy systems in Local Energy Communities (LECs), which are coordinated across multiple energy sources, has gained considerable attention in recent years. LECs have been recognized by the EU as a key component of the energy transition to integrate the local coordination of energy supply and consumption into overarching systems and grids. The European Commission`s Clean Energy Package has defined a legal framework for the operation of LECs, aiming at the participation of LECs in the energy markets. The coupling of multiple energy sources appears to be a promising solution to further reduce carbon emissions and maximize generation from renewable sources, but their coordinated operation is still a challenge.

PhD position summary/title: PhD position – Modelling of Gas Grids for High Performance Computing Simulation

The increasing share of fluctuating renewable energies in electricity generation leads to increased volatility as well as a strongly changed distribution of the power fed into the grid. This increases the requirements on the flexibility of the system and the operation of power grids. Additional electricity demand to decarbonize various energy sectors, such as transport and heating, as well as intersectoral flexibility options such as power-to-X lead to increasing sectoral interdependencies. Your task is to support our institute in the development of gas grid models that are able to analyze this interaction of energy networks (electricity, gas, heat) and markets at high resolution.
