(01) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position
Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc Position: the Migration-Class Nexus
The role of social class for people on the move is understudied. This social class position of immigrants shapes their ability to navigate migration laws and acquire a legal migration status. Once settled, laws and policies determine which constraints immigrants face and which opportunities they are offered, thereby affecting their class position. By analysing the interaction of social class and laws and policies both pre-and post-mobility, the ‘class-migration nexus’ project will make it possible to paint a complete picture of this interaction, thereby addressing a gap in our knowledge on the functioning of social class in immigrants’ lives.
As a postdoctoral researcher you will contribute to the research project by performing a case study among participants who share the same nationality but hold various social class positions and legal migration statuses (family migrants and refugees). Examples of nationalities that could qualify for the case study are Iranian, Syrian, Venezuelan, Nigerian or Pakistani. We encourage ‘peer researchers’, who share the nationality of the participants in the case study, to apply. Please note that a case study among migrants with Turkish nationality is already being conducted within the framework of the project.
Deadline : 17 August 2025

Postdoc summary/title: Postdoc Position: Ecosystem Size Spectra Analysis
The overall aim of ’The Power of Size’ is to establish relationships describing the emission, fate and effects of pollutants as a function of size. We intend to derive overarching scaling principles that apply across multiple disciplines, including hydrology, socioeconomics, toxicology and ecology. To achieve this, you will collect data from databases, reviews, articles and reports. You will then derive and compare statistical and mechanistic relationships. As the lead author, you will publish your results in scientific journals and present your main findings at international conferences.
This vacancy involves Task 3.1 of ‘The Power of Size’ project, which is aimed at deriving theoretical and empirical scaling relationships linking species richness, trophic level productivity and community biomass to size spectra under stress. Examples of the approach can be found in Ecological Modelling 205: 196-208 and Ecological Indicators 79: 114-121. You will be part of the WP3 team consisting of Prof. Jan Hendriks, Dr Wilco Verberk, Dr Aafke Schipper, and one PhD candidate, and also collaborate with the PhD candidates and postdoctoral researchers of WP1 and WP2.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc Position: Size Scaling of Environmental-Economic Systems
The overall aim of ’The Power of Size’ is to establish relationships describing the emission, fate and effects of pollutants as a function of size. We intend to derive overarching scaling principles that apply across multiple disciplines, including hydrology, socioeconomics, toxicology, and ecology. To achieve this, you will collect data from databases, reviews, articles, and reports. You will then derive and compare statistical and mechanistic relationships. As the lead author, you will publish your results in scientific journals and present your main findings at international conferences.
This vacancy involves Tasks 1.1-1.3 of ‘The Power of Size’ project, which are aimed at deriving theoretical and empirical scaling relationships linking resource and pollutant flows to the size of systems such as cities and river catchments. Examples of pilot studies can be found in Environmental Science and Technology 45: 751–754 and Journal of Hydrology 544: 479-487. You will be part of the WP1 team consisting of Prof. Jan Hendriks, Prof. Birka Wicke, Dr Steef Hanssen, one PhD candidate and another postdoctoral researcher, and also collaborate with the PhD candidates and postdoctoral researchers of WP2 and WP3.
Deadline : Open Until Filled
(04) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position
Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc Position: Social Interaction and Language Technology
The position is part of the Futures of Language project, in which we study interactive language use as it adapts to major sociotechnical transitions. Questions we ask in the project include: What are the interactional foundations of language? How do current and future language technologies augment or exploit them? And how can we reimagine our linguistic futures? Many current language technologies bear the mark of a legacy that privileges text over talk, information over interaction, and automation over agency. Futures of Language aims to understand what happens when we invert those priorities.
As a postdoctoral researcher, you will conduct and publish original research on topics at the intersection of language, social interaction and technology. You will also carry out academic service in the context of the project – from co-organising workshops to carrying out science communication – and you will be able to contribute to supervision. There is a significant degree of freedom in terms of research questions and methods, but in general we are interested in interactive interfaces (text and voice) as places where language and technology co-evolve, and in global linguistic diversity as a reservoir of humanity’s artisanal technologies of language.
Deadline : 26 August 2025

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc Position: Language Evolution Using Virtual Reality at the Donders Centre for Cognition
This postdoctoral position involves developing and combining innovative tools that effectively simulate language evolution de novo and in silico in order to shed light on the pressures that drive and shape language evolution in artificial 3D environments. Specifically, this project focuses on two fundamental aspects of human language that give rise to language’s unparallel expressive power – namely its grammatical structure and our propensity to lie – and test under which social and environmental conditions these two features spontaneously emerge as beneficial and stable strategies that boost the evolutionary fitness of humans and simulated agents. By systematically manipulating the social conditions (cooperation vs. competition, solo vs. group foraging) and landscapes (poor vs. rich resource availability, clustered vs. uniform resource spread) in which humans and robots forage, you will shed light on the unique set of pressures that promote the emergence of grammar and lying in new communication systems – and map the possible ecological niches in which early humans evolved language.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Position at the Donders Centre for Cognition: Learning New Words (short term)
You will collaborate with an interdisciplinary team of researchers consisting of Clara Ekerdt, Guillen Fernandez, Gabi Janzen, Evan Kidd, Kristin Lemhöfer and James McQueen. This team have been working on a large-scale developmental project on individual differences in language processing that was funded through the NWO Gravitation grant ‘Language in Interaction’. Behavioural, functional and structural MRI data was collected from a cross-sectional developmental sample of 135 Dutch participants aged 8-26. Participants were asked to learn new words in Finnish, a language they did not speak, in a multi-day paradigm designed to test for effects of memory consolidation. The behavioural and fMRI data from this task are waiting to be analysed, as are related sMRI (grey and white matter) data. You will perform these analyses and write the findings up for publication.
Deadline : 21 August 2025
