PhD position summary/title: Doctoral Student – Enhancing Building Efficiency through Edge-based Machine Learning and Control

Modern buildings operate thanks to a complex network of sensors and control systems at various levels, that manage tasks such as air quality control, temperature regulation, and zone-specific environmental conditioning. Advanced control methods can significantly improve building efficiency and reduce emissions. A significant challenge is the limited computational capability of edge devices in buildings coupled with the complex interconnections and time varying dynamics. Addressing these challenges requires the development of the next generation of efficient data-driven methods that can adapt to changing external conditions and continuously learn from data in a distributed way. Coupling of new theory with effective implementation strategies have the potential to make a lasting impact on building efficiency through sustainable automation.

PhD position summary/title: Doctoral Student Position – Climate and Agronomic Impacts of Biogas Slurry

The resulting product from the biodigestion process is biogas effluent or slurry, which is a nutrient-rich liquid that can be used by farmers to improve crop yields. However, the slurry poses climate challenges due to its continued release of carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxides (NOx), and methane. The current climate mitigation models for biogas offsets do not currently account for continued release from the slurry.  Furthermore, the effluent is bulky, difficult to apply, and unfamiliar to farmers. The guiding research questions for this work are:

  1. What are the current practices and barriers to slurry utilization among farmers participating in the MDBP?  (Quantitative and qualitative analysis)
  2. What is the methane potential related of stockpiled slurry and how do these values impact the CO2-equivalent calculations for the reactors? (Quantitative assessment and modeling)
  3. What are the crop and soil-related impacts of slurry use in agriculture? (Field trials at research stations and farmer level)

(13) PhD Degree – Fully Funded

PhD position summary/title: PhD candidate for developing concepts for active/passive EMI/input filters and tools for filter design optimisation

We are looking for highly motivated individuals with an outstanding academic background who are interested in pursuing a PhD in the important and multidisciplinary research area of EMI/input filters for power electronic converter systems as for example 3-phase rectifiers or converters in electric vehicles. EMI and/or input filters are key elements for reducing the noise emission and harmonics, so that the converters meet the relevant standards/grid codes. However, they substantially increase the size of the converter and also reduce the system efficiency. Furthermore, the filter can impair the system stability. The rapid development of new semiconductors (e.g. wide bandgap SiC MOSFETs/GaN HEMTs) results in constantly increasing switching speeds, so that more noise at higher frequencies is emitted and the parasitic elements of the filter as well as the layout have a larger impact on the achievable filter attenuation. Minimising the filter volume exacerbates this issue, since it typically leads to increased parasitic electric and magnetic coupling between the different filter elements. This makes the filter design even more challenging. To address this challenge, you will first investigate new concepts for passive as well as active filter concepts that allow to minimise the filter volume and the losses. In a second step, you will develop novel filter design procedures that consider not only the filter attenuation, but also the HF losses, the temperature distribution and the impact of the filter on controller stability. For validating the new concepts as well as the design procedure you will build prototype systems and perform comprehensive measurements in the fully equipped HPE laboratory.

The new filter design procedure should be integrated in a computationally efficient way into optimisation procedures for power electronic converters and are essential for achieving outstanding system efficiencies and power densities as well as for gaining a competitive edge. This project is part of an ongoing wider modelling framework development at HPE and also offers the opportunity to collaborate with other PhD candidates.

PhD position summary/title: PhD position: Learning-based Input Detection from Electromyography (EMG) Signals for Augmented Reality

Emerging AR/VR interfaces are limited by the input modalities they rely on and existing input devices have a limited bandwidth: pointing, clicking, typing. The future of Augmented and Mixed Reality systems promises much broader bandwidth for sensing input from a user through neural interfaces.

In this project, we aim to explore EMG-based signal processing to detect input and user intent. The purpose of this is to support emerging AR platforms (such as Meta Orion’s EMG neural wristband). We will explore how sensed differential signals can be leveraged for input, interaction, and adaptive control in MR environments. Central challenges include signal denoising, signal processing, robust event detection, and modeling shifts across sessions and users.

PhD position summary/title: PhD position in Water Disinfection Chemistry

Applications are invited for a PhD position on Water Disinfection Chemistry in the Environmental Chemistry group at ETH Zurich. The project focuses on the recent discovery of chloronitramide, a disinfection byproduct formed during the decomposition of chloramines and will be supervised by Dr. Juliana Laszakovits in the group of Prof. Kristopher McNeill.

Chloronitramide was recently reported by our group to be a novel disinfection byproduct. It is formed through the autodecomposition of chloramine, a widely used drinking water disinfectant and was found in all tested chloraminated drinking water samples at levels between 1 and 180 ppb. There are no previous reports of chloronitramide and accordingly nothing is known about its toxicity or occurrence.

The overarching goals of this project are (1) to improve monitoring efforts by developing widely accessible analytical approaches to quantify chloronitramide and (2) to investigate the impact of common water quality parameters on chloronitramide formation mechanisms during drinking water treatment. The results of this work are expected to inform risk assessment and regulation of chloronitramide and to guide water treatment utilities in managing its formation.

PhD position summary/title: Ph.D. position in atmospheric biogeochemical modeling

We are seeking a highly motivated and curious Ph.D. student to join the Inorganic Environmental Geochemistry group at ETH Zurich and Eawag, the Swiss Federal Institute of Aquatic Science and Technology, an interdisciplinary team of researchers studying biogeochemical cycles of trace elements across different environmental compartments. Our mission is to understand and predict environmental distributions of health-impacting trace elements to prevent health hazards, today and in the future. The position is offered in the framework of a recently funded SNSF project with the goal to improve our understanding of the atmospheric cycling of the essential micronutrient selenium (Se) by integrating measurements and a computational atmospheric Se model. Knowing the chemical forms (speciation) of Se in atmospheric wet and dry deposition fluxes is essential because it determines its fate in surface environments, i.e., its mobility, bioavailability for plant uptake and, ultimately, its health impact. This knowledge is key for developing sustainable management strategies to ensure adequate and safe levels of Se, in agricultural systems as well as in other ecosystems.
