PhD position summary/title: Social Science PhD Opportunity on Understanding vulnerabilities to Cyber Scams Research
This is an unprecedented opportunity for an outstanding psychology or social sciences PhD candidate interested in researching vulnerability to cyber scams, supervised by Professor Monica Whitty at Monash University. The candidate will join one of the world’s leading cybersecurity research groups, focused on creating a more secure, safe, and fairer world.
Professor Monica Whitty is a Maureen Brunt Fellow and winner of the 2025 cyberpsychology and cybersecurity lifetime award for her dedicated and excellent research into the human factors in cybersecurity. Professor Whitty holds a Professorship in Human Factors in Cyber Security and is an expert in cybersecurity and cybercrimes, having led large interdisciplinary projects focused on cyber scams, insider threats, online deception, cybersecurity practices, education, awareness raising, and detecting and preventing disinformation. She has been an expert witness on 10+ court cases for scam victims (especially victims who were unknowingly tricked into becoming a drug mule). She was a member of the Global Futures Communities for Cyber Security for the World Economic Forum. Prof Whitty is the author of 5 books and over 100 articles. Examples of her books include: Cyberspace Romance: The Psychology of Online Relationships’ (2006, Palgrave) with Adrian Carr, and ‘Truth, Lies and Trust on the Internet’ (2009, Routledge) with Adam Joinson and Cyberpsychology: the study of individuals, society and digital technologies (2008, John Wiley & Sons) with Garry Young.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Scholarship in Generative Artificial Intelligence
Generative artificial intelligence is a significant and highly visible use of machine learning which has become commonplace in a matter of a few short years. Without common guardrails or clear precedent, humanity now contends with a technology that has potential to reshape valued parts of our social life, individually and collectively. In assessing the impacts of generative artificial intelligence, Monash University’s Faculty of Arts has launched a scholarship opportunity for an aspiring researcher to study generative artificial intelligence using a hands-on approach.
Monash Arts is seeking interested applicants who are keen to pursue novel research projects that use generative artificial intelligence within the humanities and/or social science disciplines. This PhD scholarship will be led by supervisors from the Faculty of Arts in collaboration with associate supervisors from the Monash Artificial Intelligence Institute (Faculty of Information Technology).
Applicants should develop their own research proposal, and proposals must:
- concern themselves with a social science and/or humanities research agenda as appropriate to the applicant’s research interests;
- involve the use of generative artificial intelligence in the research project either as a phenomenon being directly tested and studied, or as a substantial component of the research design or methodology.

PhD position summary/title: Monash Education PhD Scholarship – Engineering the Future: Safety Risk Intelligence in Early Childhood
Monash University is offering a fully funded PhD scholarship including support for fieldwork and conference travel, for a passionate early childhood professional. The project aims to investigate children’s capacity to read their natural and engineered environment for risks, engineer solutions to problems they encounter, and positively develop safety risk intelligence (SRI).
Key research questions include: What are the motivating conditions for developing safety risk intelligence in engineering contexts in early childhood? How do educators draw on engineering concepts and principles to create a SeeMore Engineering Conceptual PlayWorld that supports children’s development of safety risk intelligence? What, if any, are the safety risk intelligence profiles related to engineering as practice in EC contexts? How do children develop safety risk intelligence in engineering contexts?
This project is led by Monash University: Emeritus Professor Marilyn Fleer, Dr Anne Suryani, Dr Prabhat Rai, in collaboration with Dr Susie O’Neill from the K.I.D.S Foundation. The project is funded by Australian Research Council Linkage grants.

PhD position summary/title: Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) on Phase Transformations in Advanced Steel Design
Expressions of interest are sought from outstanding domestic and international candidates for PhD study within the Department of Materials Science and Engineering (MSE), Faculty of Engineering, Monash University.
This PhD project forms part of the Baosteel–Australia Joint Centre (BAJC) collaboration and will investigate how local phase transformations can be harnessed to design new classes of advanced steels. The research aims to develop a mechanistic understanding of localised transformation behaviour and to design novel alloys that achieve superior combinations of strength, ductility, and damage tolerance.
Working within the Metallurgy and Corrosion Research Cluster, the candidate will combine experimental studies, computational modelling, and data-driven alloy design to:
- Understand the mechanisms of local austenite-to-ferrite transformation in low-alloy steels;
- Develop frameworks to predict and control these transformations;

PhD position summary/title: Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) on Australian Green Ironmaking
Expressions of interest are sought from outstanding domestic and international candidates for PhD study within the Department of Materials Science and Engineering (MSE), Faculty of Engineering, Monash University.
This PhD project will contribute to MSE’s strategic research initiative on accelerating Australian green ironmaking, addressing critical challenges in the transition to sustainable metallurgical processes. The successful candidate will develop a fundamental scientific framework to tackle key research questions in the Australian context, including impurity management, microstructure evolution, ore processing, and the development of green ironmaking infrastructure.
Monash University hosts a unique suite of green ironmaking characterisation facilities, offering exceptional opportunities to perform in-situ and high-resolution materials analysis. Leveraging these state-of-the-art research capabilities, the candidate will conduct high-quality, impactful research in high-temperature materials science, with a particular focus on phase transformations in ceramics, metals, and other solid-state systems.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Opportunity – Indigenous (Energy)
Monash Energy Institute and Faculty of Information Technology invites applications for a fully funded, 3.5-year PhD scholarship for commencement in 2026. The scholarship provides a stipend of $52,352 per annum tax exempt for 3.5 years along with additional support.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Scholarship – Gaining a Holistic Understanding of Eating Disorders: Phenotyping and Genotyping Illness
Eating disorders are serious mental illnesses characterised by severe disturbances in eating behaviours, which are particularly difficult to treat, with poor treatment outcomes and high relapse rates. However, current treatments are moderately effective at best. Given available therapies are designed to target known core psychopathological features of the illness, the moderate efficacy of existing treatments suggests we do not yet have a full understanding of what is core to these illnesses, nor how best to heal from them. This PhD aims to obtain a comprehensive, integrated, multi-level understanding of mechanisms and features involved in the development and maintenance of eating disorders.
This PhD scholarship is supported by funding from the Australian Eating Disorders Research and Translation Centre (AEDRTC) and will fund the candidate to work as part of a multidisciplinary team. The candidate will receive training in, and use a range of psychological, cognitive, and behavioural tools and techniques in both clinical trials and longitudinal studies.
