PhD position summary/title: AI-Driven Monitoring of UK Pollinators for Biodiversity and Sustainable Land Management – PhD

This is an exciting PhD opportunity to develop innovative AI and computer vision tools to automate the identification and monitoring of UK pollinators from images and videos. Working at the intersection of ecology, machine learning, and sustainable land management, the research will combine field data collection, deep learning model development, and stakeholder co-design to support biodiversity conservation. 

The project will engage with the UK Pollinator Monitoring Scheme (PoMS) and DEFRA’s Pollinator Advisory Group to ensure alignment with national biodiversity goals. Outcomes will enhance understanding of pollinator dynamics and inform evidence-based conservation and agricultural policies.

(04) PhD Positions – Fully Funded

PhD position summary/title: Development of Advanced Additive Manufacturing for Blades in High Efficiency and Low Emission Gas Turbines PhD

This project is sponsored by EPSRC, Cranfield University and a consortium led by ETN global. ESPRC will provide stipend (£22,000 per annum) and cover UK fees. The consortium will provide supervision support to the student and also the opportunity for a placement. The project will tackle decarbonisation of the energy sector, gas turbines will be required to cut harmful emissions. This could be done by using alternative fuels and/or increasing the efficiency of the gas turbines. Additively manufactured materials, could help in increasing the temperature at which GTs will run, with a consequent increase of the overall efficiency of the system. Their degradation behaviour in different fuels (hydrogen, ammonia or bio-fuels) is yet to be understood. This PhD project aims to investigate the effect of novel AM materials on corrosion response of key component and develop a model to predict their behaviour.

PhD position summary/title: Enhancing Water Treatment using Robotic Tools for Filter Maintenance PhD

Cranfield University invites applications for a PhD funded by Thames Water through the Ofwat Innovation Fund. The studentship covers full Home tuition fees plus a tax free stipend of £24,000 per year. Working at the intersection of water engineering, environmental microbiology, robotics, and lifecycle analysis, you will evaluate autonomous underwater skimming robots that minimise energy use in slow sand filters. This project suits graduates seeking careers in drinking water technology, sustainable infrastructure, and low carbon process design.

Drinking water production is under mounting pressure to reduce both energy demand and chemical consumption. Project SandSCAPE, an Ofwat-funded programme, tackles this challenge by integrating purpose-built robots that skim slow sand filter beds while they remain flooded. Because slow sand filtration already supplies most of London’s tap water with minimal chemical input, refining it through robotics offers a practical route to low-carbon, nature-based treatment that safeguards microbiological quality and boosts resilience to climate uncertainty.

PhD position summary/title: Experimental and Numerical Study of Parameters Affecting the Wake Dynamics of a Simplified Car: Effects of Roughness – Turbulence – Yaw Angle

Air quality has become a major concern for public health as it causes respiratory and cardiovascular diseases, cancer, diabetes, and premature deaths. Air pollutants can be gaseous or solid particles (also referred as particulate matter). The impact of pollutants not only depend on the emitted quantity but also on other factors such as the proximity to sources and the dispersion conditions. The automotive sector makes a significant contribution to local air pollution and exposes the population to dangerous levels of pollutants. To reduce pollutant emissions, the automotive sector focused on reducing fuel consumption by decreasing the vehicle drag. This approach reduced pollutant emissions generated by road vehicles. However, the levels of pollutant emissions need to be further reduced.

PhD position summary/title: Extreme learning to handle ‘Big Data’ PhD

As aerospace platforms go through their service life, gradual performance degradations and unwarranted system failures can occur. There is certain physical information known a priori in such aerospace platform operations. The main research hypothesis to be tested in this research is that it should be possible to significantly improve the performance of extreme learning and assure safe and reliable maintenance operation by integrating this prior knowledge into the learning mechanism.

The integrating should enable to guarantee certain properties of the learned functions, while keep leveraging the strength of the data-driven modelling. Most of, if not all, the traditional statistical methods are not suitable for big data due to their certain characteristics: heterogeneity, statistical biases, noise accumulations, spurious correlation, and incidental endogeneity.  Therefore, big data demands new statistical thinking and methods. As data size increases, each feature and parameter also becomes highly correlated. Then, their relations get highly complicated too and hidden patterns of big data might not be possible to be captured by traditional modelling approaches.

PhD position summary/title: Performance of supercritical CO2 power generation systems PhD

Due to unique properties of supercritical CO2 (sCO2), power generation systems using sCO2 as working fluid have many advantages over their counterparts, such as gas turbines and steam turbine power plants. These advantages include being more compact, lower costs, using single-phase fluid rather than two-phase fluid used in steam turbines, higher cycle efficiency when using low temperature heat sources compared with gas turbines, etc. The aim of this PhD research is to develop novel performance simulation capabilities to support the analysis and optimization for sCO2 power generation systems. The developed new knowledge will assist performance designs, analysis, operations, and condition monitoring of sCO2 power generation systems.  The project will be undertaken using the strong thermodynamic performance simulation capabilities for gas turbine engines developed at Cranfield University as the starting point.

PhD position summary/title: Transition to low carbon airports – PhD

Despite improvements in the energy efficiency of aircraft, the growth in passenger volumes is likely to leave aviation sector with positive emissions by 2050. The limited role of biofuels in aviation necessitates the development of novel technologies like hybrid-electric or hydrogen-fuelled aircraft, as noted in the government’s Transport Decarbonisation Plan and Jet Zero Strategy. Yet, how airports can manage their existing infrastructure systems whilst moving to a net zero infrastructure system is unknown.
