PhD position summary/title: PhD student in Structural geology
This PhD project aims to identify the macro- to micro-scale structures responsible for the initial stages of hydration of dry, impermeable rocks, as well as to determine the resulting variations in rock rheology. This will be achieved by using a field-based approach and combining detailed structural analyses with quantitative (micro-) analytical techniques.
The selected candidate will conduct field work in areas that expose deep portions of the continental crust in the Scandinavian Caledonides and the European Alps. As the project targets dominantly high-grade metamorphic rocks, it will also involve petrological tools and methods. The successful candidate will further engage with quantitative analytical techniques (e.g., scanning electron microscopy including electron backscatter diffraction, electron micro probe analyses) to trace micro-scale fluid pathways. It is anticipated that the selected candidate will also have the opportunity to engage with numerical tools in the final stages of the project in order to synthesize the findings.
Deadline : 02.Dec.2025

PhD position summary/title: PhD student in Physical Geography: Ice-core based Solar activity Reconstructions
Over the past decade, scientists have discovered that the Earth has been hit by several extreme solar storms during the Holocene. These events were identified as sharp peaks in cosmogenic radionuclides (e.g.,¹⁰Be, ¹⁴C och ³⁶Cl) preserved in natural archives such as tree rings and ice cores. Today, such storms would pose serious risks to satellites, aviation, power grids, and even atmospheric chemistry. Yet, we still know little about how often these events occur, how strong they can be, and what their full impacts are.
This PhD project will directly address these questions by mainly investigating cosmogenic radionuclides in Greenland ice cores. Radionuclides are produced in the atmosphere when cosmic rays interact with air molecules and thus, they provide a unique window into past solar activity and extreme solar storms.
Tasks of the PhD candidate:
- Work with ice core material from Greenland (and others where relevant) for the past few centuries.
- Prepare and process samples in the laboratory for radionuclide analyses, with measurements carried out by Accelerator Mass Spectrometry (in collaboration with partner labs).
- Carry out complementary chemical analyses of ice core samples stored at the Ice Core Lab at Department of Physical Geography.
- Use quantitative approaches, including statistical analysis and modelling, to interpret the data.

PhD position summary/title: PhD student in Political Science with an orientation towards Politics & AI
We are offering a PhD position as part of the WASP-HS Research Cluster “AI, Power, and Politics” – a collaboration between Stockholm University, University of Gothenburg, Umeå University and the Institute for Futures Studies. The overarching aim of the cluster is to analyze how AI-driven technologies mediate power relations, influence political deliberation, and challenge foundational democratic values. Specifically, the cluster addresses three larger questions: (i) What are the implications of AI for opinion dynamics and public trust in media ecosystems? (ii) How does AI affect democratic values, such as legitimacy, accountability, transparency, inclusivity, and trust in public decision-making? (iii) In what ways is AI reshaping governance and power relations on national and global levels? The PhD project is expected to address one of these themes.
The PhD position is part of the Wallenberg AI, Autonomous Systems and Software Program – Humanity and Society (WASP-HS). The vision of WASP-HS is to foster novel interdisciplinary knowledge in the humanities and social sciences about AI and autonomous systems and their impact on human and social development. WASP-HS enables cutting edge research, expertise, and competence building in the humanities and social sciences. For more information about the research and other activities conducted within WASP-HS please visit http://wasp-hs.org/.

PhD position summary/title: PhD student in Environmental Science, PFAS emissions from lithium ion battery recycling
Fluorinated chemicals are essential components of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), but some, particularly per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), pose risks to humans and the environment. As European LIB manufacturing and recycling grow rapidly, understanding and mitigating the risks of these fluorinated substances is critical. In the Formas-funded project “Investigation and risk mitigation of PFAS and other hazardous fluorinated substances in lithium-ion battery recycling” (FreeLIB), we aim to enhance the safety and sustainability of LIBs by identifying and mitigating potential emissions of hazardous fluorinated chemicals during recycling. The role of the PhD student in this project is to utilize state-of-the-art analytical approaches to examine the occurrence and behaviour of fluorinated chemicals during LIB recycling.
