PhD position summary/title: PhD Candidate in MIP-Based Sensor Engineering for Antimicrobial Resistance Detection

As a PhD candidate, you will develop a molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP)-based sensor for detecting antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in pathogens that threaten human health. Acting as artificial antibodies, MIPs have molecule-specific binding sites formed during synthesis, enabling selective detection of antibiotics and other biomarkers.

Building on the department’s pioneering work, you will design, synthesize, and test MIPs, integrate them into a point-of-care (POC) device, and validate their performance on real-world AMR samples. The ultimate goal: a functional prototype that supports faster, more accessible diagnostics and helps limit the spread of drug-resistant infections.

This project is part of a multidisciplinary research initiative at the Sensor Engineering Department, supervised by Dr. Bart van Grinsven, Dr. Valerii Myndrul, and Kelly Erven. You will collaborate with experts from chemistry, biomedical engineering, and materials science, combining fundamental research with real-world application.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Candidate – Genetically Triggered Aortic Aneurysm Modelling Using 3D Vascular Tissues

Patients with genetically triggered aortopathies can develop extensive aneurysms and dissections at a young age, often affecting entire families. The consequences are severe, yet the genetic correlation remains poorly understood. To address this, we aim to create 3D in vitro vascular models that help predict aneurysm progression and vulnerability. As our new PhD candidate, you will contribute directly to this effort by developing patient-specific induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC)-derived vascular tissues to assess disease severity, drug efficacy and the potential of gene-correction therapies.

You will work in a highly interdisciplinary setting, bringing together vascular biology, genetics, tissue engineering and clinical research. Within FHML and the HVC–CARIM platform, you will collaborate closely with researchers, clinicians and technical specialists. You will help build a sustainable research infrastructure dedicated to aortic disease, one that connects scientific excellence with active patient engagement. (03) PhD Positions – Fully Funded

PhD position summary/title: PhD in Computational Modelling of Bone Regeneration in Compromised Environments

This vacancy represents an exciting opportunity for ambitious individuals to join the computational group led by Aurélie Carlier as part of the DRIVE-RM program. The PhD researcher will perform cutting-edge research in computational modeling methods applied to regenerative medicine and more specifically, to bone regeneration.

Regenerative medicine (RM) holds the promise to cure many of what are now chronic patients, restoring health rather than protracting decline, bettering the lives of millions and at the same time preventing lifelong, expensive care processes: cure instead of care. The scientific community has made large steps in this direction over the past decade, however, our understanding of the fundamentals of cell, tissue and organ regeneration and of how to stimulate and guide this with intelligent biomaterials in the human body is still in its infancy. Specifically, it is crucial to understand the underlying regenerative mechanisms and how these are altered in compromised environments (e.g. due to aging or co-morbidities such as diabetes or chronic kidney disease). This research project aims to develop and use in silico models to simulate the bone regeneration process, to improve our fundamental understanding thereof, and use the obtained knowledge to design improved regenerative medicine strategies.

PhD position summary/title: PhD candidate: developing an in vitro platform to investigate sex differences in renal drug handling

We seek a PhD candidate to join our team developing advanced (computational) models to understand (patho)physiological renal drug and toxin transport. The overall aim of this project is to create a novel in vitro platform to investigate sex differences in renal drug handling, enabling the quantification of sex-specific transport kinetics.

It has been widely recognized that sex differences impact disease progression and medication effects, but despite mandates for female inclusion in clinical trials, preclinical studies continue to overlook sex-specific variation. For example, the kidneys play a pivotal role in drug excretion, with 32% of the top 200 prescribed drugs being renally eliminated. However, the impact of sex differences on renal drug handling, and consequently pharmacokinetics, remains elusive. Sex differences in renal drug handling may arise from various factors, including anatomical, (epi)genetic and sex hormonal differences, and it is challenging to account for all these effects in vitro. Hereto, we aim to use an integrated in silico – in vitro approach, combining physiologically based pharmacokinetic (PBPK) models with in vitro work to quantify what is happening at the individual proximal tubule cell level to provide accurate active transport predictions. Rodent models are inappropriate for such data, since their renal clearance differs from humans.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Candidate on Inequality Dynamics at the Department of Macro, International and Labour Economics

The Department of Macro, International and Labour Economics (MILE) at the School of Business and Economics (SBE) of Maastricht University, offers a 4-year PhD position, starting September 1, 2026 (ultimo September 1, 2027) under a department-wide research theme of Inequality Dynamics.

Recent academic literature and economic policy debates have seen an increasing focus on both economic inequality, and the link between health and economic outcomes. This project’s starting point is the idea that these two concepts are inherently linked and that in particular, by neglecting health and lifespans, we mismeasure a crucial aspect of inequality. Given that health, mortality, income and wealth are correlated, measuring inequality in terms of the income and assets of the current population and ignoring differences in health and lifespans could be leading to misleading results if the primary objective is to capture differences in lifetime welfare.

With the start of an exciting initiative to accelerate the regional circular transition, the Expertise Centre on Regional Circular Economy (ERCE) has been started. The Centre will act as a key player in the regional ecosystem that seeks to develop a circular society, developing insight that can be translated to other regions worldwide.

This PhD project investigates the many ways in which social actors articulate circularity and how these evolving meanings influence transitions in practice. Rather than asking what circularity is, you will explore how circularity is enacted on the ground – from mobility networks to food systems, housing, healthcare and beyond. Your work will include longitudinal field research in emerging circular initiatives that participate in ERCE.

By tracing how articulations of circularity coexist, conflict, merge or transform over time, you will generate conceptual and empirical insights that support citizens, policymakers, entrepreneurs and investors in navigating the circular transition. PhD position summary/title: PhD position – Modelling plant-microbe interactions

Plants are constantly communicating with their environment. They sense light, water and nutrients, and they engage with a rich community of soil microbes. These microbes play a crucial role in stress tolerance, pathogen defence and plant productivity. In this PhD project, you will explore these interactions through computational modelling. You will not only study how plants and soil microbes influence each other, but also investigate symbiotic processes that help plants thrive. By developing and analysing multi-species models, you will contribute to a deeper understanding of how plants and microbes exchange information.

You will conduct your research within the interdisciplinary environment of BFFI and MaCSBio, both part of the Faculty of Science and Engineering of Maastricht University. Your main workplace will be the Brightlands Campus Greenport in Venlo, where you will join the Plant Computational Biology group led by Dr Ruth Großeholz. This PhD project is part of the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Doctoral Network Just Health. JustHealth is an international, intersectoral and highly interdisciplinary project providing Marie Skłodowska-Curie PhD Fellowships to 8 doctoral candidates, with the potential to become the leaders of tomorrow in the booming domain of Artificial Intelligence (AI) applied to the health sector.

AI and robots can do a lot of good in healthcare, but only if they are built with the people who use and are affected by it: patients, nurses, doctors, data teams, and communities. This PhD focuses on the skills those people need to work well together (listening, facilitation, ethics, data basics, cultural sensitivity) so that AI is fair, safe, and useful in both high-resource and low-resource settings around the world.

You will map where co-creation breaks down today and why, identify the essential skills different stakeholders need, and design training that works in practice (from simple workshop tools to digital and VR exercises).
