PhD position summary/title: PhD position on Quantum Simulation with RbSr Ground-state Molecules

When atoms are cooled to nanokelvin temperatures, their quantum-mechanical wave properties become evident. At densities where their de-Broglie wavelengths overlap, a quantum-degenerate gas is formed, either a Bose-Einstein condensate (for bosons) or a degenerate Fermi gas (for fermions). At the University of Amsterdam we are exploring a unique mixture of atomic species, namely Rb and Sr. The long-standing goal is to bring these species together and form RbSr molecules. A key milestone in this regard was the discovery and characterization of so-called Feshbach resonances in this mixture [Nat.Phys 14, 881 (2018)]. Since then, we have developed several key insights and new tools, see Rev.Sci.Instr. 94, 073202 (2023) and the recent PhD thesis of Premjith Thekkeppatt

PhD position summary/title: PhD position in Trapped Ions Qudits in 173Yb+

We are looking for a motivated PhD candidate for performing state-of -the art atomic physics experiments and developing quantum technology. We will develop a new platform for quantum computing, based on qudits encoded in 173Yb+ ions. Yb+ ions are used in many groups around the world to construct quantum devices, but the isotope 173Yb+ has almost not been considered. With its large nuclear spin and forbidden transitions, it offers great opportunities to encode qudits. Quantum devices based on qudits encode quantum information in more than two levels. This increases the amount of quantum information per carrier and offers benefits when it comes to scaling the device and for algorithm efficiency as compared to qubits. We will explore the use of tightly focused laser beams and their interaction with crystals of trapped ions to realize new ways to prepare and control qudits and use and characterize forbidden transitions for qudit state detection.

PhD position summary/title: PhD position in AI-driven inference for gravitational-wave cosmology with LISA

We are seeking an enthusiastic PhD candidate to develop cutting-edge, AI-driven inference methods for next-generation gravitational-wave astronomy, with a focus on cosmology and astroparticle physics. The position is based at the University of Amsterdam within the GRAPPA Center of Excellence, where you will join the research group of Dr. Christoph Weniger and work in close collaboration with an international network of theorists, machine-learning and AI experts, and LISA instrument and data-analysis teams, at the interface of fundamental physics and modern data science.

The PhD project is centered on the analysis of data from the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) and addresses key challenges such as the global inference of large populations of overlapping gravitational-wave sources and stochastic backgrounds. The ultimate goal is to extract new information about the early Universe and fundamental physics—including inflationary processes, dark matter, and dark energy—from LISA’s rich gravitational-wave data.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Position in NeuroAI for Video Perception in the Human Brain

We are looking for a PhD candidate to join our research project entitled ‘BrainShorts: Identifying neural mechanisms of dynamic video perception with deep learning’, funded by a NWO Vidi grant awarded to Iris Groen.

The public summary of the project is as follows: Videos are everywhere these days. The popularity of platforms such as TikTok shows how much these ‘stimuli’ appeal to our brain. Physically, video shorts consist of a few seconds of pixels changing luminosity over time. Our visual brain effortlessly distils a meaningful message from this, while even the most advanced AI techniques still struggle. Moreover, modern AI requires a lot of training data and energy to analyse a short video, while the brain continuously operates in a dynamic world on a few watts only. What clever computations does the brain use to achieve efficient processing of videos?

PhD position summary/title: PhD Position in Cognitive AI Methods

We are looking for a PhD candidate to join our research project entitled “How smart is AI really? Methods for investigating intelligence in humans and AI”, funded by a NWO Vidi grant awarded to Claire Stevenson. This project is led by dr. Claire Stevenson (PI), dr. Han van der Maas (promotor) and dr. Martha Lewis (co-promotor). The project starts April 1st 2025.

The public summary of the project is as follows. AI-models appear to be rapidly developing human-like intelligence. For both scientists and the broader public, an urgent question is “How smart is AI currently and how intelligent will it become?”. However, we do not know because current methods for evaluating intelligence in people are not suitable for AI and vice versa due to inherent differences in learning, memory, and processing between these systems. This project develops the necessary methods to study how smart AI-models are compared to people, now and in the future, and sheds light on how to safely utilize AI in our daily lives.

PhD position summary/title: PhD position in Responsible Advice-Giving Systems

We are seeking a PhD candidate to work on responsible and interpretable advice-giving and information retrieval systems. You will carry out your research at the University of Amsterdam as part of the IRLab within the Informatics Institute.
How people access and engage with information has changed significantly over the past decades, and especially in recent years. Automated systems are increasingly used to retrieve, rank, summarize, and interpret information. While these developments create great opportunities for improving information access, they also introduce substantial risks. Information is central to a democratic society therefore it is essential that such systems provide truthful, unbiased, and transparent outputs. In this PhD position, you will develop and evaluate approaches for responsible advice-giving and information retrieval systems (e.g. retrieval-augmented generation (RAG)), for instance by using interpretability techniques.
