PhD position summary/title: PhD Position: Providing informal care to loved ones at the expense of one’s social relations?
This PhD project is part of the SOCION consortium. SOCION addresses a pressing challenge of our time: fragmentation in societies. Social cohesion is society’s fabric and it is key to sustainable societies and citizens’ well-being. However, it is increasingly undermined by erosion and polarisation between communities, factions, and groups. In this project, psychologists, social historians, demographers, philosophers, and sociologists collaborate with civic organisations to generate and integrate insights into how connections between individuals, groups, and institutions contribute to new pathways to and forms of social cohesion.
This specific PhD project, entitled “Providing informal care to loved ones at the expense of one’s social relations?”, starts from the societal observation that population ageing results in a growing need for care, which increasingly falls on informal caregivers: people in the personal network of the person who needs help. This PhD project explores the consequences of providing informal care for the quality of caregivers’ social relations. If providing informal care reduces the quality or number of the caregivers’ relations with their partner, family, or friends, informal carers will lack the network they need once they require care themselves. Combining sociological and social-psychological theoretical mechanisms, this project answers the question of whether, why, and under which conditions providing informal care has consequences for informal carers’ social relations. As such, it provides key insights into how we may optimize care arrangements.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Position: Factual Belief Polarisation and its Attitudinal Consequences
What citizens believe to be true and whether they trust science and experts increasingly depend on where they stand on the political spectrum. As a result, political opponents are often divided not only in their attitudes, but also in their beliefs about reality. Left-wing and right-wing voters, for instance, have different perceptions of the causes of climate change, the magnitude of income inequality, and the number of immigrants in their country. We are recruiting a PhD candidate who will examine how this ‘factual belief polarisation’ influences public opinion and potentially contributes to broader polarisation.
You will apply new and existing experimental methods to examine when, how, and why factual beliefs about issues such as inequality, immigration, or government spending have an impact on issue attitudes and affective polarisation. Your results will be disseminated in international peer-reviewed journal articles and an article-based PhD dissertation. Your supervision team will consist of Dr. Roderik Rekker (main substantive supervisor), Dr. Hakan Çakmak, Dr. Bojana Većkalov, and Prof. Dr. Carolien van Ham. You will also have a limited teaching assignment of about 5%.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Position: Women Building Cities
The Department of Anthropology and Development Studies (ADS) at Radboud University invites applications for a fully salaried PhD position within the NWO-funded project ‘Women building cities: Overcoming violence and transforming the city with communities of care’ (WECARE). WECARE is a comparative participatory and co-production research project led by Dr Sonja Marzi, Assistant Professor at the Department of Anthropology and Development Studies.
You will investigate how marginalised communities in Latin America transform their urban environments to become more liveable, sustainable, safe and democratic. In particular, you will focus on women’s everyday grassroots place-making, local leadership and their right to the city, examining how they create alternative urban spaces and governance systems. The project aims to deepen understanding of how forms of alternative urbanism and city-making are rooted in reciprocal practices of care and how these (predominantly informal) communities are created, function on an everyday basis, and why they thrive. The project explores how women’s urbanism and city-making contribute to making these spaces more liveable, safe and sustainable. The research compares four case studies across cities in Colombia and one other Latin American country, potentially, Peru, using a qualitative participatory and co-production research approach.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Position: Medieval Literature ‘Consent in Songs in European Narrative Traditions’
As a PhD candidate you will conduct an independent research project within the CONSENT team. CONSENT examines the theme of sexual consent in medieval European narrative song texts (c.1300-1550). The project aims to unveil a positive, consent-oriented part of late medieval culture, by investigating how song texts helped medieval people to explore positive scenarios for behaviour in sexual relationships and to discuss the importance of mutual consent.
In your project, you will investigate the theme of consent at the courts of the Rhine-Maas-Lorraine region (c. 1300-1430). This region was famous for its sociable song culture, in which no clear separation existed between performer and listener but in which the audience partook in every respect. The love songs stand out for often adding a touch of humour to the more serious themes of the courtly traditions of previous centuries. You will investigate the hypothesis that this sociable song culture gave way to new literary expressions of love and sexuality, which functioned as conversation starters or role-playing games. The list of manuscripts presented by Frank Willaert in 2021 will be your core corpus. In addition, you will explore in what respects the Rhine-Maas-Lorraine song culture was related to the other regions investigated by the CONSENT team, mapping European repertoire connections.
