The Faculty of Social Sciences, Department of Communication, The Visual and Digital Cultures Research Center is looking for a full-time PhD-student within the ERC-funded project WALLS2BRIDGES -Media Production of Prison Communities.

The ERC project WALLS2BRIDGES investigates how prison communities produce media and how these practices reshape understanding of justice across France, Türkiye, the UK, and the US. Against the backdrop of expanding incarceration regimes and enduring racial and social inequalities, WALLS2BRIDGES examines how incarcerated people, their families, and anti-prison activists engage in media production (from letters and newspapers to podcasts, films, and digital platforms) to contest dominant narratives and reimagine justice.

The project conceptualizes prison communities as active media producers, foregrounding the interplay between media practices, systems of surveillance, sensory experience, and struggles for justice.

Using a transnational and interdisciplinary approach, the project combines:

  • Archival research on prison-produced media since the mid-1960’s century;
  • Qualitative interviews and collaborative research with incarcerated and formerly incarcerated individuals, families, and activists;
  • Analysis of diverse media forms, including print, audiovisual, and digital content.

PhD position summary/title: PhD position: Spatial omics meets neurodegeneration — mapping therapeutic targets in charcot-marie-tooth neuropathy

This project aims to uncover the mechanisms by which YARS1 mutations drive peripheral nerve degeneration. We hypothesize that mutant YARS1 exerts compartment-specific toxicity, ultimately leading to axonal degeneration in a manner shared across aaRS-linked CMT. To test this, we will perform high resolution spatial transcriptomics and proteomics analyses in unique nerve biopsies and iPSC-motor neurons derived from YARS1-CMT patients. Multimodal bioinformatics processing of the omics datasets will guide selection of differentially regulated key genes to be evaluated for their therapeutic potential in our YARS1 Drosophila and iPSC models. Guided by the unmatched context of the affected human tissue, and the power of our experimental models, this work will deliver urgently needed insights into the pathogenesis of YARS1-CMT. The project may also reveal shared mechanisms and therapeutic targets relevant to other aaRS-associated neuropathies and other peripheral nerve disorders.

PhD position summary/title: PhD researcher photoelectrochemistry and nucleic acid biosensing

This PhD project aims to investigate how photosensitizer labelling affects nucleic acid amplification strategies, such as recombinase polymerase amplification, and singlet oxygen-based photoelectrochemical systems. By synthesizing different photosensitizers and coupling them to nucleic acids, the project will study their quenching behaviour, with a focus on singlet oxygen production and suppression in photoelectrochemical sensing applications. This fundamental research project will advance the understanding of photosensitizers in photoelectrochemistry and nucleic acid detection. Ultimately, the project may contribute to the development of novel biosensor technologies for detecting clinically relevant nucleic acids in healthcare applications, such as antimicrobial susceptibility testing.

About University of Antwerp, Belgium –Official Website

The University of Antwerp (Dutch: Universiteit Antwerpen) is a major Belgian university located in the city of Antwerp. The official abbreviation is UAntwerp. The University of Antwerp has about 20,000 students, which makes it the third-largest university in Flanders. The University of Antwerp is characterised by its high standards in education, internationally competitive research and entrepreneurial approach. It was founded in 2003 after the merger of three smaller universities.

The university’s roots go back to Sint-Ignatius Handelshogeschool (Saint-Ignatius School for Higher Education in Commerce) founded by the Jesuits (Society of Jesus) in Antwerp in 1852. This was one of the first European business schools to offer formal university degrees. It later opened a Faculty of Literature and Philosophy (including Law) and a Faculty of Political and Social Sciences. It was renamed Universitaire Faculteiten Sint-Ignatius Antwerpen (UFSIA) in the 1960s when the Belgian government granted it university status. In the early 1970s UFSIA joined into a confederation with “Rijksuniversitair Centrum Antwerpen” (RUCA) and “Universitaire Instelling Antwerpen” (UIA), public institutions.
