The candidate will work on the LEX2 project which is made in collaboration with The Technical University (DTU compute). The project aim at project developing 2D NMR acquisition tools and corresponding state of the art data methods for solving fundamental problems in metabolomics/foodomics such as signal overlaps, alignment and ambigious interpretation. The project will thereby develop novel computational tools that can move the state of the art NMR based foodomics and metabolomics research to a new level providing an unambiguous and in-depth identification and more reliable quantification of metabolites in biological samples. The project will explore advanced tensor decomposition methods for ultra-fast 2D NMR measurements for high throughput NMR analysis of complex food and biological samples. PhD position summary/title: PhD fellowship in Parasite-Microbiota Interactions at the Department of Veterinary and Animal Sciences
The PhD project is part of the project ‘Linking host and parasite microbiomes to probe the nature of parasitism’ funded by the Independent Research Fund Denmark. The PhD project will work with animal models (primarily zebrafish, with some mouse work) to explore interactions between dietary components, the gut microbiome, and intestinal parasites. The PhD student will work together with other PhD students and postdocs to carry out the work. This involves zebrafish handling and husbandry, infection of zebrafish with parasites, together with analysis of tissues using various immunological, molecular and metabolomic techniques. An international research stay in France (several months) is also included and work here will be focused on the microbiome in gnotobiotic zebrafish. Full training will be provided. The PhD student will also contribute to teaching in the section.

The PhD project is a collaboration between the Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences at University of Copenhagen (DK), the Department of Medical Radiation Physics at Lund University (SE), the Department of Radiation Physics at Skåne University Hospital (SE), the Section for Biotherapeutic Engineering and Drug Targeting at the Danish Technical University (DK) and the Institute for Radiation Oncology at Oxford University (UK). The PhD project will investigate the effects of FLASH radiotherapy on the immune system in two experimental murine models and in canine spontaneous cancer patients. The murine study part will be performed at Oxford University under the supervision of Kristoffer Petersson and the canine study part will be performed at the University of Copenhagen and at Lund University under the supervision of Betina Børresen, Maja Arendt and Kristoffer Petersson. Other co-investigators are Anders E. Hansen from DTU, who will be involved in evaluating the anti-tumor immune response, and Crister Ceberg from Lund University, who will be involved in the canine FLASH treatments.

The recent years have seen a growing commitment to embodied cognition as a new paradigm for knowing and learning. The study of embodied cognition builds on the assumption that thinking may occur in action and not only in the head or the brain. This shift in perspective has profound implications for science education research and practice. The goal of the PhD project is to break exciting new ground in the emerging field of embodied science education by systematically translating embodied cognition perspectives to science teacher education and/or science teaching practices. This work will also contribute to furthering the education of teachers within the Master Degree Program in STEM-Teaching. The PhD candidate will develop practical resources and establish design principles for instruction that facilitate embodied engagement to support science learning. There will be considerable room to shape and adapt this PhD project to the academic background and interests of the PhD candidate. Possible areas of specialisation could be a focus on a particular STEM discipline, e.g., embodied cognition in physics education, or a focus on certain formats of instruction, such as technology-enhanced science education viewed from an embodied-cognition lens. Applying newly developed theory from Diaspora Studies, the project investigates the earliest stage of the Jewish diaspora (597-331 BCE). A great variety of imaginative reflections in biblical texts and basic information in historical records suggests that there were a number of different attitudes to living abroad. A key goal of the project is to identity and map all textual depictions in the Hebrew Bible (Ezra-Nehemiah, prophetic texts, diaspora stories) along with archival sources from Egypt (the Elephantine Papyri) and Babylonia (e.g. the Al-Yahudu documents). The PhD-fellow will join a research team of four scholars working within the project Postwar Memory Generations and will be supervised by the project manager, Associate Professor Tea Sindbæk Andersen. The project Postwar Memory Generations investigates the role of history education and history schoolbooks in shaping cultural memory in war-torn regions. Cultural memories, understood as shared narratives and representations of a common past, are core elements of group identities and essential in the social fabric of modern societies. The role of history education in creating cultural memory is fundamental. History education and history textbooks are generally considered vital tools for states to ingrain a certain collective memory and to socialise future citizens. Yet, we know little about the actual impact of history education. This is especially relevant in post-conflict regions with a painful recent past, such as Serbia and Bosnia-Herzegovina (BiH). In such contexts, questions of what and how to remember are typically contested and contentious. The aim of this project is to investigate why minerals can stabilize DNA across space and time and how to utilize that knowledge for the research field of sedimentary ancient DNA. Antibiotics of today employ a limited set of targets, driving rapid resistance by spreading common antibiotic resistance genes. Discovery of novel, more diverse, yet specific targets is crucial to secure future sustainable solutions for combatting multi-resistant bacteria like ESBL (Extended-Spectrum-Beta-Lactamase E. coli). This project addresses a challenge raised by the first study of agrammatism in a polysynthetic language, Greenlandic. In this study, we found slow speech rates and short utterances, as expected of agrammatic speech, but almost none of the grammatical problems that gave agrammatism its name. The challenge raised by the study can be formulated in two questions: 1. Can the findings in the pilot study be replicated on a larger set of data collected from a group of well-diagnosed subjects? 2. What makes Greenlandic grammar, and presumably polysynthetic grammar in general, (seemingly) immune to agrammatism? The project brings together linguists, aphasiologists and neuroscientists to answer these questions based on the first coherent functional-cognitive theory of what grammar is. The answer to the second question is a key to understanding the neurocognitive mechanisms behind grammar and agrammatism, and a key to aid Greenlanders with agrammatism.
