PhD position summary/title: “Development of a multi-scale integrative framework for subtyping hypertension”
The objectives for the ESR4 project hence are:
1. To review methodologies and models in hypertension research and develop in collaboration with fellow ESRs an integrative model framework, allowing integration of knowledge across scales.
2. To critically review current definitions of hypertension classes with respect to underlying vascular causes, at the organ and organ-system levels, and develop a more pathophysiology-informed scheme for subtyping hypertension.
3. To develop an integrative approach facilitating optimal communication between patient and physician, to achieve the best possible and sustainable vascular health condition.

PhD position summary/title: “Renal and cerebral small vessel disease: an inflammatory tangle”
This project aims at identifying the sequential relationship between renal and cerebral microvascular dysfunction in hypertension. We hypothesise that a specific panel of pro-inflammatory signals is responsible for the initiation of a pathological cascade, including extracellular matrix and vascular remodelling which occurs concomitantly with capillary rarefaction in kidneys and later in brain.

(07) Fully Funded PhD Position
PhD position summary/title: Faculty of Health, Medicine and Life Sciences, School NUTRIM / Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology.
In this project, relevant read-out parameters will be investigated by using state-of-the-art molecular biology tools and in the end this should result in a PhD thesis. Furthermore, the results of these studies will be used to assess whether or not the implementation of novel guidelines related to the generation of MNPs in manufacturing/production processes is warranted in order to reduce human exposure and detrimental health effects of these particles.
Deadline of PhD Position: 05 April 2021
(08) Fully Funded PhD Position
PhD position summary/title: Dept. of Cognitive Neuroscience / Faculty of Psychology and Neuroscience.
The two PhD positions are part of an ERC consolidator grant awarded to dr. F. De Martino. The grant focuses on understanding predictive human hearing. Using a combination of high resolution (laminar) functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), magnetoencephalography (MEG) and computational modeling, the research in the grant will investigate the role of subcortical and cortical areas in processing the context in which sounds are heard. Through a series of studies, the grant aims at understanding how hierarchical interactions in the brain underlie our ability of predicting which sounds will come next.

PhD position summary/title: PhD position in the area of Federated Learning.
The Department of Data Science and Knowledge Engineering (DKE) at Maastricht University, the Netherlands, is looking for a PhD candidate to work on federate learning: Federated learning (FL) is a new scientific domain on the crossroads of artificial intelligence (AI) and data science (DS). FL is seen as a promising technology approach to take AI beyond the borders of a single organization, which is essential to power the modern networked society and economy. More concretely, FL enables a network of autonomous organizations that face the same machine learning task to collaboratively learn a global model that offers better predictive performance for all participants without the need to share sensitive data.
