PhD position summary/title: FLUID STRUCTURE INTERACTIONS DUE TO SCOURING AT BRIDGES.

This research project aims to investigate the causes of scour in bridges using both numerical modelling and laboratory investigations. A scaled model masonry bridge will be built for the experimental analysis of the pier scour phenomenon as well as for its evaluation of the amount and shape of the differential settlement due to the pier scour by means of hydraulic tests. The monitoring will be coupled with a detailed nonlinear finite element simulation for a better interpretation of experimental results and to better understand the dynamic behaviour of the arch bridges.

PhD position summary/title: HYBRID TITANIUM–CFRP THERMOPLASTIC LAMINATES FOR BOLTED JOINTS OF HIGH-PERFORMANCE VESSELS.

This is an exciting opportunity to pursue a PhD within the Advanced Composites Research Group at Queen’s University Belfast in collaboration with Artemis Technologies. The beam that connects the eFoiler Propulsion System (eFPS) to the hull of the vessel (Fig. 1) is made of lightweight materials, mainly CFRPs. The connections between the beam and the hull, and the beam and the eFPS are made via bolts to allow the components to be disassembled. This allows the replacement of the eFPS and/or the beam in case of damage/obsolescence of the components. Bolted joints of composite laminates have low efficiency (about 30%) and represent one week point of the structure.
