(01) Fully Funded PhD Position

PhD position summary/title: The DUNE group in Amsterdam has an opening for a PhD student. While the PhD position is at the Institute of Physics (IoP) at the University of Amsterdam (UvA), you will be fully embedded in the neutrino group at the National Institute for Subatomic Physics (Nikhef). You will be working both on the reconstruction and identification of neutrino events in the detector, and on R&D for the detection of scintillation light in liquid argon. Designs to improve the light yield are interesting in order to extend the physics reach of DUNE towards lower energies. A second prototype TPC, ProtoDUNE II, is expected to be operational at CERN soon, and you are expected to contribute to its operation and data analysis.

PhD position summary/title: This project focuses on developing shape-constrained estimation methods for cure rate models. Shape restrictions arise naturally in the context of survival analysis (monotone effect of the prognostic factors, monotone/unimodal risk function, convex/concave distribution function) and incorporating such information in the estimation procedure can lead to more accurate results. In addition, such approach enjoys the flexibility of the nonparametric methods without needing to specify tuning parameters. The project consists of several parts: development of statistical methodology and theory, extensive simulation studies and real-data applications.

PhD position summary/title: The projects is ‘Inverse based input estimation in stochastic networks’The goal of this project is to develop and analyze statistical inference methods for networks driven by stochastic processes. A complication that one typically faces is that the stochastic process feeding the network is not observed directly, and therefore indirect estimation techniques are needed. In a quintessential example, from snapshots of the network population one wishes to estimate the network’s input characteristics. Over the past years, the envisaged supervisors have built up a considerable track record around this theme. While for specific models results have been established, this area still offers a broad array of challenging open questions. The project lies at the intersection of applied probability and mathematical statistics. Potential application areas include service systems and communication networks.

PhD position summary/title: The research area is Predictive Process Modeling (PPM), which focuses on forecasting potential problems during process execution before they occur. Applications have been developed in a wide range of domains, such as manufacturing, healthcare, networking, and business processes. Increasingly comprehensive data collection provides more process visibility. Advances in machine learning make use of this increase in detail and frequency of data. Data-driven techniques in this area can be used to improve process quality control by forecasting and monitoring potential process problems. Prediction methods include regression techniques, support vector machines, decision trees, random forest, elastic nets, neural networks, and gradient boosting.
