PhD position summary/title: Studying living systems at the molecular level is crucial to improving our understanding of life. However, such a study is challenging due to the great complexity of biomolecules. For example, proteins participate in virtually every process within cells and are the dominant drugs or drug targets for the pharmaceutical industry; but proteins naturally fluctuate in structure, which causes the heterogeneity in their functionalities. Currently available biomolecule analysis techniques are based on the ensemble average of the measurements over a large amount of molecules; therefore, they cannot resolve the heterogeneity of biomolecules.

PhD position summary/title: Bioprinting of defined extracellular matrices containing cells represents a novel approach to create tissues, and 3D-bioprinted tissue models will in the future likely replace many existing 2D cell culture models currently used in academia and industry. Further, bioprinting of tailor-made cartilage and bone implants containing patient-specific cells has the potential to greatly improve reconstructive surgery. The goal of this project is to develop and use 3D bioprinting to create cartilage and bone constructs using clinically relevant human chondrocyte cell lines and osteoblast cell lines. Bioprinted constructs will also be generated where materials are included to provide unique properties to promote cell function. Bone and cartilage tissue constructs will initially be evaluated in vitro where fluidic technology will be used to enable long-term cell culture, and live imaging performed to evaluate cell viability and tissue construct stability and remodeling over time. Large scale-imaging will be performed of construct arrays, together with a variety of cellular, biochemical and mechanical end point analyses, to generate data on the functionality and robustness of the developed constructs.

PhD position summary/title: The PhD project will contribute to these grand challenges by exploring new amorphous metallic systems to create hydrogen superhighways and robust roadblocks. Lack of control of the flow of hydrogen in materials is a severe hindrance for many applications such as switchable mirrors, hydrogen gas sensing, hydrogen-induced embrittlement and hydrogen storage. Contrarily to crystalline materials, amorphous solids lack long-range atomic order and represent a fascinating and active field of study and pose intriguing scientific questions regarding the role of order on physical properties.
Deadline of PhD Position: 31 March 2021

PhD position summary/title: Magnesium-based alloys have recently made it into clinics as a degradable material, adequate for fracture fixation, e.g. in the foot. This is the result of long-term studies developing alloys with a minimal negative influence on surrounding tissues during degradation. In this project we want to further improve the functioning of these types of alloys by exploring the incorporation of other bioactive elements, as well as the possibilities for printing them using a controlled process in a powder bed fusion machine. In this way, we envisage being able to print structures similar to those marketed as trabecular metal although in this case the structures are degradable and hence presumably more adequate for patients with no underlying bone deficiency pathology
