We have openings for two PhD projects to explore the fundamental properties of semiconductor nanolasers and their application in information and quantum technology. In particular, the projects will address newly emerging possibilities for improving the laser properties by exploiting the concepts of Fano resonances and extreme confinement of light in hot spots smaller than the diffraction limit.

PhD position summary/title: PhD scholarship in Communication and Interaction in Adverse Acoustic Conditions
The project will focus on communication and interaction in adverse acoustic conditions. The goal is to characterize how various objective measures of interactive behaviour and speech production are influenced by the acoustic environment and hearing loss. An additional goal is to explore the benefit of hearing aids in making the dynamics of conversations involving aided hearing-impaired listeners more like those between normal-hearing listeners.

(04) PhD Degree – Fully Funded
PhD Program summary/title: PhD scholarship in Computational Modeling of the Perceptual Consequences of Individual Hearing Loss
The current project will focus on modeling the individual consequences of hearing impairment. This will be achieved with a ‘model-in-the-loop’ framework to investigate and predict the benefit of aided hearing as a function of a given listener’s ‘auditory profile’. The profiles will be constructed based on a robust data-driven analysis that attempts to represent auditory phenomena that are usually hidden by, or entangled with, audibility loss.

PhD Program summary/title: PhD scholarship in Characterizing Listener Behaviour in Complex Dynamic Scenes
The current project will explore listener behavior in environments with varying degrees of complexity and dynamics. Specifically, listeners will be monitored continuously using various sensors, such as motion and eye trackers, to record body and head-movement trajectories, as well as eye-gaze throughout the experimental tasks.

The overall focus of the project will be the development of a photoacoustic microscope aimed to be a novel system to obtain information about the neuronal activity of the central and peripheral nervous system. The source used for excitation of the photoacoustic signals will be a mid-infrared Raman laser based on gas-filled antiresonant hollow-core fibers.
