PhD position summary/title: PhD scholarship in Sustainable and Robust Manufacturing of Functional Ceramic Components with Hierarchical Porosity – DTU Energy
DTU Energy is offering a PhD position in the development of robust and sustainable ceramic fabrication processes to realize hierarchical porous structures based on functional ceramics such as piezoelectric or pyroelectric ceramics. The position is a part of our broad project portfolio in the area of advanced ceramic processing technologies.
Sustainability has emerged as recurring theme over the last few years and became a part of every technology. Ceramic components manufacturing technologies are no exception to this. Integration of sustainability into manufacturing processes demands efforts to conserve energy and materials along with their recovery and recycling in environmentally friendly manner. Robust and reliable manufacturing processes play a key role in the reduction of waste and conservation of energy. Green and robust ceramic manufacturing processes are essential for technological and economic competitiveness of future manufacturing markets. The state-of-the-art functional ceramic manufacturing processes involve high temperature consolidations steps of long duration, meaning consumption of huge amount of energy, while resulting in significant amount of waste during the shaping process. Furthermore, often these processes use environmentally toxic and difficult to recycle additives in shaping process.
To develop green manufacturing processes, DTU energy is spearheading the development of environmentally friendly ceramic shaping and faster consolidation processes, with the possibility of recycling the waste, for the fabrication of porous functional ceramic components.

PhD position summary/title: PhD scholarship in Smart Drug Delivery using Monodisperse Nanofibrous Microparticles – DTU Health Tech
In connection with our Novo Nordisk foundation challenge grant ‘Energy Materials for the GUT (EMGUT)’ we are looking for a PhD student to work with design, fabrication and development of nanostructured microparticles for advanced oral delivery of drugs or bioactive agents. Oral drug delivery is one of the most promising administration routes, and several studies have indicated advantages of nanostructured microfabricated systems for oral drug delivery, thanks to the maximum benefit from both nano- and micron sized features. There are, however, challenges that restrict the success and further application of such constructs. In general, such challenges include complex fabrication techniques involving organic solvents, local temperature increases, and limited control over size, delivery, and potential co-delivery of pharmaceutics. Recently, we have introduced a novel technique or high-yield fabrication of monodisperse monolayer and multilayer nanofibrous microparticles (MoNami and MuNaMi respectively). In this project, we aim to further explore the potential of these micro particles for smart multi drug delivery thanks to the layered structures providing the potential to load several components including pharmaceuticals and microorganisms, as well as release triggering agents. We might also explore applications in neighboring fields, such as pulmonary delivery. We offer a highly creative, collaborative and ambitious work environment. This project will be part of the IDUN section, led by Prof. Anja Boisen at DTU Department of Health Technology. IDUN is a highly cross-disciplinary research section with over 40 members, that focuses on development of micro and nanotechnology-based sensors, detection systems and drug delivery devices.
