PhD position summary/title: Doctoral Network PhD student
The successful candidate will complete a PhD on mechanical, inflammatory, and pharmaceutical regulation of cell polarity and the role of primary cilia in a human kidney-organ chip model. This will be supervised by Prof Martin Knight (Faculty of Science and Engineering) and Prof Cleo Bishop (Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry). This multidisciplinary PhD project will determine how changes in apical/basal spatial positioning of primary cilia regulate fundamental epithelial mechanosensitivity and kidney health (Further information available on the SurfEx website). The researcher will integrate with the rest of the SurfEx doctoral training network and be part of a large multidisciplinary team at Queen Mary University of London investigating mechanosignalling and organ-on-a-chip models. The post will be based within the Centre for Bioengineering within the School of Engineering and Materials Science with links to the Centre for Predictive in vitro Models; the Blizard Institute; and our industry collaborators.

(02) PhD Degree – Fully Funded
PhD position summary/title: Doctoral Network Candidate – PhD studentship in Chemistry GreenX3 Marie Curie Network
The appointed researcher will work on a project on ‘Ecotoxicity of compostable plastic: the effect of structure and formulations’ (DNS 13) with Prof Marina Resmini, Dr Ruth Rose and Dr Chema Martin, in collaboration with industrial partner NotPla (https://www.notpla.com/). The research will be focused on the evaluation of ecotoxicity, in particular the impact that the different formulations can have on the degradation products and their chemistry; the project will focus on a variety of algae-based formulations from Notpla. You will be required to spend 50% of your time working within a non-academic setting, mainly at Notpla, and attend all the Network’s training evens. You will be registered as a PhD student and working in both the Chemistry and Biology Departments.

PhD position summary/title: Doctoral Network Candidate – PhD studentship in Chemistry GreenX3 Marie Curie Network
The appointed researcher will work on a project on ‘Biodegradable vs compostable plastic: new formulations’ (DNS 11) with Prof Marina Resmini, in collaboration with industrial partner Symphony Environmental Ltd. The research will target the study of artificial ageing of different plastics, ranging from biodegradable to compostable, to evaluate how surface chemistry can affect the environmental impact. You will be required to spend 50% of your time working within a non-academic setting, and attend all the Network’s training evens. You will be registered as PhD student and based in the Chemistry Department at QMUL.

Queen Mary University of London (QMUL, or informally QM) is a public research university in London, England, and a member institution of the federal University of London. It dates back to the foundation of London Hospital Medical College in 1785. Queen Mary College, named after Mary of Teck, was admitted to the University of London in 1915 and in 1989 merged with Westfield College to form Queen Mary and Westfield College.
