(03) PhD Degree – Fully Funded

PhD position summary/title: PhD Research Fellow in Applied Ecology

The PhD student will work within the project ACTIONABLE, which is a large trans- and inter-disciplinary project focusing on sustainability of coastal areas across Norway and Canada. The PhD student will work primarily within ACTIONABLE work packages 3 and 4, researching how conflicting uses of coastal areas affect natures contributions to people (ecosystem services), ecosystem health and biocultural diversity, and understanding how to improve ecosystem management across the terrestrial and coastal interface. The work will primarily take place in Nordhordland UNESCO Biosphere Area, but there is the possibility of work in Lofoten, Sápmi Troms og Finnmark and the West Coast of Canada.

(04) PhD Degree – Fully Funded

PhD position summary/title: PhD position in climate dynamics

The overturning circulation in the Nordic Seas and Arctic Ocean involves the transformation of warm Atlantic waters into cold, dense overflows. These overflow waters return to the North Atlantic and form the headwaters to the deep limb of the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (AMOC). Understanding the changing processes of dense-water formation at the northern extremity of the AMOC is therefore important, as these headwaters to the lower limb of the AMOC affect the variability and potential predictability of the AMOC farther south and may sustain the AMOC even as overturning south of the Greenland-Scotland Ridge weakens in a warming climate. The appointed PhD candidate will investigate the mechanisms of overturning variability in the Nordic Seas and Arctic Ocean, and especially the relationship between overturning circulation and surface forcing. The project will also assess how overturning changes in the Nordic Seas are manifested in the subpolar North Atlantic. The PhD project will rely on the analysis of available observations and data from ocean models/reanalyses. The PhD candidate will be supervised by Dr. Marius Årthun. The PhD candidate will be connected to the projects “Overturning circulation in the new Arctic (ArMOC)” funded by the Research Council of Norway and “Dynamics of the North Atlantic surface and overturning circulation (DYNASOR)”. As a PhD-candidate at the Geophysical Institute at University of Bergen, you will also be affiliated with the Bjerknes Centre for Climate Research (BCCR). BCCR is the largest climate research centre in the Nordic countries and among the leading centres in Europe. The working environment is highly international with around 200 scientists from 37 countries.

Deadline : 17th October 2023
