PhD position summary/title: PhD student eHealth junior project
As a PhD candidate, you will be part of the eHealth Junior collaboration within the ‘Research on Routes by Consortia’ program of the NWO (Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research). The eHealth junior project aims to develop a platform with high-quality apps for 1 million chronically ill children. The apps detect and prevent psychological problems and promote play behavior, with the mission of ensuring that these children can lead a happy life and grow up resilient despite their illness.

The Erasmus Center for Neuroeconomics seeks a highly motivated PhD student looking to study decision-making using neuroscience methods (fMRI or EEG). Strong applicants typically have backgrounds in (cognitive) psychology, (cognitive) neuroscience, or neuroeconomics, and are looking to pursue careers as world-class academic researchers. At our Center, students define and execute their own projects in consultation with their advisers, and thus need creativity, self-direction, and a passion for scientific research.

(03) PhD Degree – Fully Funded
PhD position summary/title: A PhD candidate investigating user perceptions of the impact of automated decision-making algorithms in mHealth on public values (0,8 – 1,0 fte)
This project examines how ADS-based mHealth apps can increase opportunities and minimise risks for public values. In other words, how can the desired effects of ADS-based mHealth apps be optimised while minimising the potential threat to public values? The project specifically focuses on user perceptions on the opportunities and risks that ADS-based mHealth apps present for public values. It also aims to understand drivers of user perceptions, including personal characteristics such as one’s level of algorithm and data literacy and personal values or beliefs. The project takes a transdisciplinary cocreative approach, actively involving stakeholders (e.g., end-users, prevention practitioners & policy makers) as co-researchers. Additionally, the project adopts a mixed-method approach in which qualitative participatory research and quantitative research methodologies (e.g., longitudinal survey) are combined.

PhD position summary/title: Two Ph.D. Positions as part of an ERC-funded project in critical logistics and racial capitalism (2 x 1fte)
Shipping is the backbone of the global economy. 90% of the world’s goods travel by ship. The industry has a global reach and a highly diverse workforce. It is also highly unjust, structured by workers’ nationalities and backgrounds, and shaped by ongoing legacies of racial, colonial, and gendered injustice. Shipping is currently undergoing rapid change as it digitalizes its workflows, and workers may soon face conditions similar to those of other highly digitized industries, including in firms like Uber and Amazon. Digitalization does have the potential to make work safer and more efficient, but the benefits may only extend to some, and it risks streamlining existing extraction and racial capitalism. Because pay and working conditions are structured by nationality, digitalization will likely also affect maritime labor’s racialization, or how practices and ideas about race are constructed and employed.
