06 Postdoctoral Fellowship at University of Surrey, England

Applications are invited for a Research Fellow position to work part-time on a Children’s Cancer and Leukaemia Group (CCLG) funded project to map current funding in children’s cancer research against the Children’s Cancer Priority Setting Partnership priorities. The successful post holder will be based in the School of Health Sciences, working with Susie Aldiss and Professor Faith Gibson.

Please note that the post is a fixed-term post (up to six months, 0.5 FTE) with hybrid model of working.

In 2019, Children’s Cancer and Leukaemia Group (CCLG) and The Little Princess Trust partnered with the James Lind Alliance on the Children’s Cancer Priority Setting Partnership (PSP) (final report available from: https://www.cclg.org.uk/Childrens-Cancer-PSP). The aim of this PSP was to identify the research questions that need to be answered about childhood cancer, according to children, survivors, families/carers and professionals. Our focus in this current project is on the Top 23 priorities from the Children’s Cancer PSP (https://www.jla.nihr.ac.uk/priority-setting-partnerships/childrens-cancer/top-10-priorities.htm). In this project, we will undertake an information gathering exercise to establish which of the 23 priorities are currently priorities for funding and/or being funded. This will involve liaising with funders of childhood cancer research in the UK to collect their funding strategies and information on projects funded in the past five years. This will help funders to see where the gaps in funding are, avoid duplication and enable possible collaborations to ensure that all the priorities receive attention as these are the areas of research that children, survivors, families/carers and professionals have identified as important.

The successful candidate will be required to coordinate and undertake activities including liaising with research funders, leading on data collection and data management, analysis of data involving matching funding strategies and funded studies to the Top 23 priorities, dissemination of findings including report writing, preparing a journal publication and feedback to funders.

Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the School of Mathematics & Physics in the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences. The position will support a programme of applied and fundamental low-energy nuclear physics, funded under a UKRI Future Leaders Fellowship award. The fundamental programme of work will employ Coulomb-excitation and transfer reactions, making use of high-resolution gamma-ray spectrometers and their associated ancillary devices. 

The position will involve work with stable and radioactive rare isotope beams at laboratories including the Facility for Rare Isotope Beams (FRIB) and Argonne National Laboratory. The candidate will also be involved in applied nuclear physics, such as the development of novel-detector technologies for energy and security, and the measurement of decay properties for nuclear medicine.

The Surrey Centre for Cyber Security within the School of Computer Science and Electronic Engineering at the University of Surrey is seeking to recruit a full-time Researcher for a fixed period of up-to 2 years.

The successful candidate will conduct research in the area of secure systems with a focus on future authentication technologies in different application domains. For example, passwordless authentication is growing in popularity, with mobile devices increasingly providing native support.  There are interesting research challenges when users have access to a plethora of devices: How can such technologies provide secure and seamless authentication across devices in a robust way that is resilient to the recovery of users’ identity credentials and in the context of users delegating their credentials?

During the project there will be opportunities to explore system architectures and the formal verification of future authentication technologies.

The post holder will work in a world-class research environment at the Surrey Centre for Cyber Security, an Academic Centre of Excellence in Cyber Security Research recognised by the National Cyber Security Centre. The Centre’s research focus is on applied cryptography, protocols, identity and transactions, privacy and verification, and a range of cyber security topics.

The post will also offer an excellent opportunity for a researcher to develop his/her/their own research agenda within the area of secure systems and to work collaboratively in a team with colleagues within the centre and internationally. 

The successful candidate will work under the direction of Professor Helen Treharne together with the support of other colleagues within the research centre and industry collaborators. Researchers with an interest in theoretical and formal aspects of secure systems are encouraged to apply.  The post is available for 24 months to start as soon as possible no later than 1^st January 2025.

We seek a Research Fellow in Nanoscale Electronic Devices and Circuits, beginning 15 November 2024 or soon after, for up to 24 months full time (or part-time by mutual agreement). The Fellow will take a leading role, as matching their interest and expertise, in aspects of design, fabrication or characterisation of novel transistor structures, circuits and applications.

The work forms part of the Multipurpose Electronics Toolkit using Suspended Membranes: towards Systems on Nothing research project, awarded to principal investigator Dr Radu Sporea, who will oversee the work.

The Fellow will be conducting the core research in accordance with objectives and methodology identified jointly with the supervisor, which make the most of the candidate’s interest and expertise, in aspects of design, fabrication, analysis or characterisation of novel electronic devices, specifically source-gated transistors. along with their associated applications.

The post will be held at the Advanced Technology Institute, University of Surrey and will likely involve significant collaboration and exchanges with project partners, suppliers and investors, building on the work described in our publication which introduced the concept.

Apart from conducting the research and publishing the results, tasks will also include assisting the Academic with research proposal writing, commercialisation activities, dissemination of results (which may involve national and international travel, with many personal and career development opportunities) and contributing to the team’s award-winning teaching track record.

Accurately measuring greenhouse gas emissions from human activity is challenging. Static sensors only measure one point in space, but sensors mounted to unmanned aircraft are noisy and can only fly for a short time. We are addressing this challenge by building an autonomous, mobile gas flux tower, consisting of a helium-filled aerodynamic kite tethered to an autonomous ground vehicle. Multiple vehicles operating together will create high resolution maps of emissions and airflow, at unprecedented spatial resolutions.

 The project will be carried out in a newly outfitted robotics facility at the University of Surrey, with access to the Environmental Flow Laboratory wind tunnel facilities, gas analysis laboratories, and outdoor test spaces. The project will include industrial collaboration for fieldwork at a variety of sites in southeast England, and the Ebro Delta in Spain.
