PhD position summary/title: Doctoral (PhD) student position in autoimmunity research
The project will focus on the effects of different autoantibody clones on RA development. These antibodies have been cloned from plasma cells or memory B cells of RA patients and recognize post-translationally modified proteins (primarily citrullinated or malondialdehyde (MDA)-conjugated proteins). First, we will study how T cell mediated mechanisms or inflammatory mediators modulate autoantibody-induced pathways in mice.
Deadline : 21.Oct.2021
(03) PhD Degree – Fully Funded
PhD position summary/title: Doctoral (PhD) student position in human adipose tissue biology
The PhD- student will work with human adipose tissue samples to perform adipocyte cell culture, immuno-histo/cytochemistry, flow cytometry, confocal microscopy and other molecular biology techniques. Protein (mesoscale and western blot) and RNA (single cell and bulk sequencing) analyses will also be performed. Radiocarbon dating will be used to investigate senescent cell turnover.
Deadline : 07.Nov.2021
(04) PhD Degree – Fully Funded
PhD position summary/title: Doctoral (PhD) student position in stem cell based treatment of blindness
We have already established methods to produce retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) cells for treatment of AMD (Plaza Reyes et al., Stem Cell Reports 2016, Petrus-Reurer et al Stem Cell Reports 2020, Plaza Reyes et al., Nature Communication 2020). Our next goal is to now also produce the photoreceptors for future treatment of inheritable retinal disease where these cells degenerate or are lost. The project will be pursued independently but in close collaboration other lab members and with Anders Kvantas and Andre Helders research teams together with industrial partners.

About The Karolinska Institute, Sweden – Official Website
The Karolinska Institute sometimes known as the (Royal) Caroline Institute in English is a research-led medical university in Solna within the Stockholm urban area of Sweden. The Nobel Assembly at the Karolinska Institute awards the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. The assembly consists of fifty professors from various medical disciplines at the university. The current rector of Karolinska Institute is Ole Petter Ottersen, who took office in August 2017.
The Karolinska Institute was founded in 1810 on the island of Kungsholmen on the west side of Stockholm; the main campus was relocated decades later to Solna, just outside Stockholm. A second campus was established more recently in Flemingsberg, Huddinge, south of Stockholm.
The Karolinska Institute is Sweden’s third oldest medical school, after Uppsala University (founded in 1477) and Lund University (founded in 1666). It is one of Sweden’s largest centres for training and research, accounting for 30% of the medical training and more than 40% of all academic medical and life science research conducted in Sweden.
The Karolinska University Hospital, located in Solna and Huddinge, is associated with the university as a research and teaching hospital. Together they form an academic health science centre. While most of the medical programs are taught in Swedish, the bulk of the PhD projects are conducted in English. The institute’s name is a reference to the Caroleans.
