Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Research Associate – Metalation (Job Number: 23001262)
Prospective candidates will have a higher degree (to PhD level) in chemistry, in biochemistry or in biological chemistry. Evidence of an advanced level of competence in the purification and characterisation of metalloproteins is essential, including in the determine of metal affinities, DNA affinities of transcriptional regulators, protein structure determination and establishing the metalation status of recombinant metallo-proteins. Background knowledge of metals in biological systems and related bioinorganic chemistry are also both essential. The post requires good skills in reporting research progress verbally, and in writing. It involves collaboration with an external partner at the Quadram Institute in Norwich. The objective of this BBSRC programme is to make protein metalation in cells tractable in research and in biotechnology. The hypothesis being tested is that protein metalation inside cells can be calculated from free energy differences (deltaG), and that available deltaG can be read-out using metal-sensors. A purpose of this work has been to develop such calculations for bespoke (conditional) cells, to test the calculations, and to make such calculations accessible to non-specialists through easy-to-use metalation calculators. The first and last objectives are already complete, and the remaining year will focus on testing the calculator via the entrapment of metals (including cobalt, manganese, and iron) by the protein MncA. This will be done at different ratios of intracellular deltaG for various metals and tested against in vitro entrapment at the same metal ratios by folding MncA protein in matching metal buffers. Additionally, the repertoire of tractable metalloproteins will be extended to encompass kinetic trapping. The work has significance for bioscience and industrial biotechnology generally, and the manufacture of vitamin B12 specifically

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Research Associate in Biochemistry and Structural Biology (Job Number: 23001385)
The Department of Biosciences is composed of 62 academic staff and research fellows; around 50 research and technical support staff; over 90 Research Postgraduate students and over 500 Single Honours undergraduate students, and also teaches students from the Natural Sciences programme. The Department is committed to an ethos of research-led teaching at both BSc and MBiol levels, and was ranked 5th in the UK for Biological Sciences Departments in the Complete University Guide 2023. Our basic science underpins applications across each-and-every sector of the bio-economy, including Biotechnology, Ecology and Agritechnology. Research programmes are grouped in the following areas: Molecular Plant Sciences; Biomolecular Interactions; Ecology, Evolution and Environment; and Animal Cells and Systems. These groups organise focused seminar series, Research Away Days, manage joint research facilities, oversee mentoring, internal peer review and serve to nucleate larger research projects. Along with our excellent research facilities such as bioimaging, proteomics, metabolomics and genomics we offer a high quality and supportive environment for our research staff.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Research Associate in the OEM Group (Job Number: 23001317)
Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Research Associate to work with Prof A Monkman on a joint project entitled “Pitting Molecular Strain Against Aromaticity” in collaboration with Prof P McGonigal at the University of York. In Durham we will undertake complex time resolved measurements of emission and photoinduced absorption on the order of femtosecond to microsecond to understand the evolution of conformational reorganisation of molecular structure in the excited state. Measured decay kinetics will be modelled using various kinetic models to derive radiative and non-radiative decay rates as well as ISC rates along with phosphorescent lifetimes. From this, energetic relaxation pathways, quenching channels and conformational reorganisation will be determined. A high level of previous knowledge of time resolved spectroscopy measurement and modelling of photophysical processes is required for this project.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Research Associate (Job Number: 23001354)
Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Research Associate in environmental simulation modelling with a particular emphasis on catchment hydrological and water quality modelling under projected climate and land use change. The research project is funded by NERC under the Freshwaters programme and is called “ECOMIX – Assessing and Managing The Impacts Of Mixtures Of Chemicals On UK Freshwater Biodiversity In A Changing World”. The overall project will consider how the changing climate and land use will affect the export of a range of chemicals and nutrients to the freshwater environment and their impact on biodiversity. Durham University is leading the catchment hydrology and biogeochemical modelling and these results will feed into the water chemistry work at the University of York and the biological impacts work at the University of Sheffield.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Research Assistant in Experimental Radio Propagation Studies (Job Number: 23001137)
The successful candidate will be working in the Communications and THz node in the department of Engineering under the supervision of Professor Salous who is the lead academic for the EPSRC project Transmission Channels Measurements and Communication System Design for Future mmWave Communications (mmWave TRACCS), which is collaborative with Queen Mary University of London (QMUL) and University College London (UCL). The research addresses the higher frequencies in the 140-170 GHz (termed D-band) and beyond (275 GHz band). At these frequencies, where there is plenty of available spectrum to satisfy the spectrum hungry applications of wireless systems, new designs are required. The project brings the complementary expertise to research, design and experimentally demonstrate systems working at these frequencies, in an integrative and holistic fashion. For such work, there are three key challenges relating to the radio channel and the signal and system design.

About Durham University, England – Official Website
Durham University is a collegiate public research university in Durham, England, founded by an Act of Parliament in 1832 and incorporated by royal charter in 1837. It was the first recognised university to open in England for more than 600 years, after Oxford and Cambridge, and is thus one of the institutions to be described as the third-oldest university in England. As a collegiate university its main functions are divided between the academic departments of the university and its 17 colleges. In general, the departments perform research and provide teaching to students, while the colleges are responsible for their domestic arrangements and welfare.
The university is a member of the Russell Group of British research universities after previously being a member of the 1994 Group. Durham is also affiliated with the regional N8 Research Partnership and international university groups including the Matariki Network of Universities and the Coimbra Group. The university estate includes 63 listed buildings, ranging from the 11th-century Durham Castle to a 1930s Art Deco chapel. The university also owns and manages the Durham World Heritage Site in partnership with Durham Cathedral. The university’s ownership of the World Heritage Site includes Durham Castle, Palace Green, and the surrounding buildings including the historic Cosin’s Library. It was Sunday Times University of the Year for 2005, and the Times and Sunday Times Sports University of the Year for 2015, and was awarded a Queen’s Anniversary Prize in 2018. Durham University Student Volunteering and Outreach was awarded the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service in 2020.
Among British universities, it had the sixth highest average UCAS Tariff for new entrants in 2018 and the third lowest proportion of state-school educated students starting courses in 2016, at 62.9 per cent (fifth lowest compared to its benchmark). The chancellor of the university is Sir Thomas Allen, who succeeded Bill Bryson in 2012. Current and emeritus academics include 14 Fellows of the Royal Society, 17 Fellows of the British Academy, 14 Fellows of the Academy of Social Sciences, 5 Fellows of the Royal Society of Edinburgh, 2 Fellows of the Royal Society of Arts and 2 Fellows of the Academy of Medical Sciences. Durham graduates have long used the Latin post-nominal letters Dunelm after their degree, from Dunelmensis (of, belonging to, or from Durham)
