(01) PhD Degree – Fully Funded

PhD position summary/title: PHD STIPENDS AT THE CENTER FOR NEUROPLASTICITY AND PAIN (CNAP)

This project includes the exploration of excitability and connectivity changes in people with chronic pain using transcranial magnetic stimulation coupled with concomitant EEG recording. TMS-EEG allows for the measurement of connectivity, network characterization and oscillation pattern assessment caused by probing single pulses of TMS delivered to pain-relevant cortical hubs.

PhD position summary/title: PHD STIPEND IN ACOUSTIC SIGNAL PROCESSING AND DEEP LEARNING FOR HEARING ASSISTIVE DEVICES (8-23017)

Our goal in the PhD project is to explore and design algorithms which process noisy speech in order to increase speech intelligibility, sound quality, and listening comfort in a hearing assistive device context. More specifically, we envisage a project which in the first stages relies on “classical” statistical signal (speech) processing techniques, and in later stages explores deep learning techniques, potentially generative models and novel learning paradigms including self-supervised learning. In contrast to much existing work, specific focus will be directed towards algorithms which – rather than simply suppressing the background noise – modifies the target speech signal in order to make it easier intelligible.

PhD position summary/title: PHD STIPEND IN MULTISCALE MECHANICAL MODELLING OF TOUGHENED ADHESIVE JOINTS IN LARGE COMPOSITE STRUCTURES

The focus of the PhD project is mainly on the modelling of the joint. This involves a multiscale model of the joint and damage mechanisms. First, a detailed multiscale model of fatigue-driven damage on the length scales from µm to cm will be developed. Based on this multiscale model, a machine learning model will be developed that mimics the effects of damage development relevant for a model on the structural scale. This model should be combined with an existing FEM-based damage prediction framework. Experimental characterisation will be handled by another researcher in the project. Collaboration between this modelling focused project and the work of the experimentally focused researcher is planned. The major topics in this PhD project are damage and fracture mechanics, programming, machine learning models, finite element method, and composite materials.
