(01) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title:  Research Fellow – Low frequency Gravitational Waves

Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Research Fellow to work with Dr Alessia Gualandris in the Astrophysics group within the School of Mathematics and Physics at the University of Surrey. The position is fully funded by the STFC Astronomy Small Award “The dawn of low frequency Gravitational Wave astronomy”.

The primary aim of the grant is to translate Pulsar Timing Array measurements of the amplitude of the gravitational wave background into inferences about the black hole-galaxy connection. The project will combine state-of-the-art simulations of galaxy mergers, sampled from cosmological merger trees, with machine learning tools to calculate the gravitational wave background based on black hole and galaxy properties. The successful applicant will assess the efficiency of massive black hole mergers and construct a theoretical model for the amplitude and shape of the observed signal.

Deadline : 19 February 2024

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Research Fellow – Understanding the diversity of low mass galaxies

Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Associate to work with Dr Michelle Collins in the Astrophysics group within the School of Mathematics and Physics at the University of Surrey. The position is fully funded by the STFC Astronomy Small Award “Understanding the diversity of low mass galaxies”.

The primary goal of this research position is to understand the diversity in both the number of satellites around galaxies at fixed halo mass, and the shape of the dark matter density profiles of dwarf galaxies by combining state-of-the-art data from wide-field surveys — including the Vera Rubin Observatory’s LSST and Euclid – with cutting-edge in-house simulations of the lowest mass galaxies.

(04) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Research Fellow in Electrochemical Engineering (Research Fellow A)

Applications are invited for a Research Fellow in design of electrochemical materials, devices and processes with advanced AI and digital tools as part of the EPSRC Open Fellowship project on the IDEA: Inverse Design of Electrochemical Interfaces with Explainable AI (grant number EP/W03722X/1) which aims to deliver the IDEA framework, standing for “Inverse Design with Explainable AI”, that can offer ground-breaking electrochemical interface designs for energy applications in an explainable and rationalised manner. Here, ‘inverse design’ means desired life-cycle performance indicators are used as input, for the Explainable AI models to generate electrochemical interface designs that would satisfy the requirements, underpinned by interpretable and physically-meaningful decision-making across multiple scales. The post will be based within the School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering (SCCE) at the University of Surrey.

(05) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Research Fellow in equitable net zero energy system

We are seeking a highly motivated Research Fellow wishing to advance their career in a research-driven, interdisciplinary environment, beginning 1 April 2024 or soon after, for 24 months. The Fellow will support the Dr Lirong Liu in delivering the UKRI funded project Energy Demand Research Centre. The project offers an excellent opportunity to develop research expertise in a collaborative project by working with an interdisciplinary team involving diverse partners.

The Research Fellow will carry out research for the project in Equity theme that is finding out how different energy demand solutions can deliver an affordable, clean and more equitable net zero energy system. You will focus predominantly on develop an energy-demand focused optimisation model with the equity maximisation as the function and apply this model for examples of communities. You will use AI techniques to address the multi-objective and diverse challenges. Your work will also include literature reviews, data-analysis, writing reports, supporting project management, as well as liaising with team members (external and internal). UK and international travel may be required.

(06) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Research Fellow in Mathematical Modelling, Model Data Fusion/Machine Learning and Human Sleep-Circadian Rhythms

Applications are invited for a Dementia Research Institute funded Postdoctoral Research Fellow position (24 months in the first instance) based in the Surrey Sleep Research Centre led by Professor Derk-Jan Dijk and Professor Anne Skeldon in the School of Mathematics and Physics.

This post is funded by the Dementia Research Institute (DRI) Care Research & Technology Centre, which is a collaboration between Imperial College London and the University of Surrey. The UK Dementia Research Institute (UK DRI) was created through a joint investment from the Medical Research Council (MRC), Alzheimer’s Society and Alzheimer’s Research UK.

This is an exciting opportunity to become part of a comprehensive research programme into the development and validation of methods to assess and improve circadian rhythmicity with an emphasis on sleep and circadian disturbances in dementia. The successful candidate will work across a variety of tasks and research methods to develop and evaluate mathematical models, model data fusion methods, and machine learning algorithms for circadian rhythms and sleep in humans.

(07) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Research Fellow in Sustainable Manufacturing (Research Fellow A)

This project is part of a multi-institutional EPSRC programme focused on Sustainable Manufacturing with advanced electrochemical approaches. The programme involves 4 universities (Surrey, Loughborough, Imperial College London, and Heriot-Watt) and a number of industrial partners. Our vision is to create the first-of-its-kind Zero Carbon Loss manufacturing system that will pave the way for the UK to reach the 2050 Net Zero target, and achieve the Green Industrial Revolution. This will be enabled by developing a novel biomanufacturing route with carbon capture and utilisation (BMCCU) that can produce sustainable bioproducts (e.g., detergents, polymer, medicine, etc) with net zero loss of carbon resources flow throughout the manufacturing life cycle and supply chain. The project will also take a whole system approach to address wider economic, social and environmental challenges for the sustainable evolution of bio-based industries.

About The University of Surrey, England – Official Website

The University of Surrey is a public research university in Guildford, England. The university received its royal charter in 1966, along with a number of other institutions following recommendations in the Robbins Report. The institution was previously known as Battersea College of Technology and was located in Battersea Park, London. Its roots however, go back to Battersea Polytechnic Institute, founded in 1891 to provide further and higher education in London, including its poorer inhabitants. The university’s research output and global partnerships have led to it being regarded as one of the UK’s leading research universities.

The university is a member of the Association of MBAs and is one of four universities in the University Global Partnership Network. It is also part of the SETsquared partnership along with the University of Bath, the University of Bristol, the University of Southampton and the University of Exeter. The university’s main campus is on Stag Hill, close to the centre of Guildford and adjacent to Guildford Cathedral. Surrey Sports Park is situated at the nearby Manor Park, the university’s secondary campus. Among British universities, the University of Surrey had the 14th highest average UCAS Tariff for new entrants in 2015.

A major centre for satellite and mobile communications research, the university is in partnership with King’s College London and the University of Dresden to develop 5G technology worldwide. It also holds a number of formal links with institutions worldwide, including the Surrey International Institute, launched in partnership with the Dongbei University of Finance and Economics. The university owns the Surrey Research Park, providing facilities for over 110 companies engaged in research. Surrey has been awarded three Queen’s Anniversary Prizes for its research, with the 2014 Research Excellence Framework ranking 78% of the university’s research outputs as “world leading” or “internationally excellent”. It was named as The Sunday Times University of the Year in 2016.
